Prefrontal cortex activation and functional connectivity during human male orgasm measured with fNIRS

A portable fNIRS system Brite MKII (Artinis, NE) was placed on the PFC of the self-experimenting participant (Male, 43 years). Ten sources and eight detectors are combined into 22 long separation channels (30mm) and two short-separation channels (SSC) to cover the PFC (Figure 1A). The experiment lasted 392s where the participant was subject to pornographic video clips (V) and performed genital self-stimulation (M) until orgasm was reached (O).
Citation of the article related to this dataset:

Guevara, E. (2024). Prefrontal cortex activation and functional connectivity during human male orgasm measured with fNIRS [Preprint]. Raw data for "Effect of MRgFUS treatment on cortical activity in Parkinson's disease: a fNIRS study"

In this paper, a new combined approach, based on Magnetic Resonance-guided Focused Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) technique and functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), was applied for treatment and monitoring of patients affected by bilateral Parkinson’s disease (PD). On one side, MRgFUS enables non-invasive thalamotomy by combining FUS for tissue ablation and MR for targeting and monitoring. On the other side, fNIRS allows to monitor, non-invasively and without strict motion restriction even in a daily life environment, cortical neural activity related dynamics of both oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin (HbO and HbR, respectively). In particular, the changes of cortical activation pattern in PD patients, with respect to age matched healthy control subjects, were analysed, while performing left and right hand finger tapping (LFT and RFT, respectively), before MRgFUS treatment, and at two different time intervals after the treatment. By comparison with the pre-treatment session, significant activations were predominantly observed one week after the treatment, with patterns recalling those of control group, and partially lost one month later, likely because of the neurodegenerative nature of PD. In addition, activations were more marked for LFT task, being the treatment performed on the right hemisphere. These results appear promising in view of the application of fNIRS for neurorehabilitation, especially in those clinical settings where traditional neuroimaging techniques cannot be applied.

A potential biomarker of brain activity in ASD: a pilot fNIRS study in female preschoolers

Looking for visual cortical activity as putative brain biomarker: a pilot fNIR study on autistic
female preschoolers.

We performed an observational prospective monocentric study in a tertiary care University hospital
(IRCCS Stella Maris Foundation, Pisa, IT). We recruited 12 females with idiopathic ASD and 13 sex/age-matched control typically developed peers. Established inclusion criteria were: 1) diagnosis of ASD according to
the DSM-5 criteria (APA, 2013); 2) age range: between 3 and 6 years; 3) female gender; 4)
negative genetic testing for Fragile X and MECP2; 5) negative history of premature birth or
neurologic complications possibly related to delivery and 6) non-verbal IQ > 70. ASD diagnosis has
been performed by a multidisciplinary team including a senior child psychiatrist, an experienced
clinically trained research child psychologist and a speech-language pathologist during 5-7 days of
extensive evaluation. Demographic characteristics and clinical features of experimental cohorts are
listed in Tables 1 and 2. Clinical measures such as Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule
(ADOS) (Lord et al., 2012), Autism Questionnaire (AQ) – children’s version, cognitive and
adaptive profile were systematically collected for each subject using internationally validated
scales/interviews, such as Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (Wechsler, 2002)
and Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-II –VABS- (Sparrow et al., 2005).
All participants reported normal or corrected-to-normal vision.
