Dataset for "Study of Rapid Capacity Fade in Prismatic Li-ion Cells with Flexible Packaging"
<p>Prismatic lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are considered promising electric energy sources in electromobility applications due to their cell to pack density. However, their sensitivity to external and internal influences, and reduced durability lead to inflation risk and potential explosions throughout their lifecycle. These critical processes are strongly influenced by the inner construction of the cell, especially concerning the coating and mechanical fixation. This study subjects a commercially available prismatic LIB cell to comprehensive, correlative analysis employing various imaging techniques. The inner structure of the entire cell is visualized non-destructively by X-ray computed tomography (CT), enabling the identification of critical design flaws prior to electrochemical cycling. Electrochemical cycling simulates the battery lifecycle, and the cell is subsequently disassembled in the fully charged state. The usage of the inert-gas transfer system allowed the preparation of Broad Ion Beam (BIB) electrodes cross-sections in a fully native state and for the first time to observe the tearing of graphite particles due to over-lithiation. Established region labeling system allowed to use CT and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) correlatively to identify critical regions. After 100 cycles, a 40% capacity loss was observed and event diagram describing deagradation mechanisms, related both to the cell design and to the processes occurring at high load, was created.</p>

<p>Battery degradation is critical to the cost-effectiveness and usability of battery-powered products. Aging studies can help to better understand and model degradation and to optimize the operation strategy. Nevertheless, there are only a few comprehensive and freely available aging datasets for these applications.<br>To our knowledge, the dataset presented in the following is one of the largest published to date. It contains data from 228 commercial NMC/C+SiO lithium-ion cells aged for almost 600 days under a wide range of operating conditions. We investigate calendar and cyclic aging and also apply different driving cycles to some of the cells.<br>This dataset is an update to the dataset previously published under the DOI 10.35097/1947 and described in the publication with the DOI 10.1038/s41597-024-03831-x. This dataset only includes result data (capacity, impedance, and pulse resistance measurements). The log data is published under the DOI 10.35097/kww7jv8ajuvchcah.</p>

<p>The extinction of all Madagascar's megafrugivores ca. 1000 years ago, may have left its signature on the current distribution of vertebrate-dispersed plants across the island, due to the loss of effective seed dispersal. In this study, we dissect the roles of extinct and extant frugivore distributions, abiotic variables, human impact and spatial predictors on the compositional turnover, or beta-diversity, of palm (Arecaceae) species and their fruit sizes across 40 assemblages on Madagascar. Variation partitioning showed that palm beta-diversity is mostly shaped by the distribution of extant frugivores (8 lemur, 3 bird, 2 rodent and 1 bat species) and the abiotic environment (e.g., forest cover, slope and temperature), and to a lesser extent by the distribution of extinct frugivores (5 giant lemur and 3 elephant bird<i> </i>species)<i>. </i>However, the contribution of these variables differed between dry western assemblages and wet eastern assemblages, with a more prominent role, albeit still small, of extinct megafrugivores in the west. These results suggest that palm distributions in the dry west of Madagascar, where megafrugivores were probably most abundant in the past, still show signatures of past interactions. With a fourth-corner analysis we observed that the distribution of palm species with relatively large fruits and seeds was negatively associated with home range of extant mammalian frugivores and frugivore richness of both past and extant communities, and positively associated with the hand-wing index (HWI) – a proxy for dispersal ability - of extant bird communities. This suggests that palm species with relatively large fruits tend to occur in places with fewer, small-ranged mammalian frugivores, which may indicate dysfunctional seed dispersal, although a few wide-ranging bird species may compensate this loss by dispersing the seeds of small-to medium-sized palm fruits. Our results shed new light on anachronisms in Madagascar, and how defaunation and past interactions may underlie current plant distributions.</p>

Data from: The fading of fear effects due to coral degradation is modulated by community composition
<ol> <li>An increasing number of coral reefs throughout the world have become degraded as a result of climate change. This degradation has resulted in a significant decline in local biodiversity. Studies have shown that some fishes (non-responders) within these altered habitats are not able to adequately access olfactory cues, specifically chemical alarm cues that are crucial in mediating predation risk.</li> <li>We propose that the inability to access this crucial information is a potential mechanism for increased mortality of these species under natural conditions. However, we posit that the presence of certain key species (responders that are unaffected by degradation) may buffer the handicap of non-responders by providing an alternate source of information.</li> <li>To explore this hypothesis, we investigated if a high ratio of responders to non-responders could mitigate the impact of information loss for the affected species. Using mesocosms, we manipulated the ratio of two damselfish species, Pomacentrus chrysurus (responder) and P. moluccensis (non-responders), to determine if community composition can be predictive of information transfer about predation threats in nearby non-responder individuals.</li> <li>Our results indicate that the magnitude of fear effects seen in P. moluccensis exposed to a predator was proportional to the number of P. chrysurus present and consumed by the predator in the community. This indicates that P. chrysurus became the only functional source of predation-related information for P. moluccensis in degraded habitats.</li> <li>Our study provides evidence that the presence of non-affected species in the community provides a potential mechanism allowing increased resilience by affected species, therefore providing another example of the way biodiversity affects ecological resilience of species in changing ecosystems.</li> </ol>

<p>This is an addendum to the previously published dataset with the title "Comprehensive battery aging dataset: capacity and impedance fade measurements of a lithium-ion NMC/C-SiO cell [dataset]" (DOI: 10.35097/1947).<br>In the previous publication, the "cell_eisv2.zip" file was incomplete and only contained data for cells P001_1 to P044_2.<br>The fixed "cell_eisv2_fixed.zip" file of this addendum contains data for all 228 cells P001_1 to P076_3.</p>

Nevertheless, there are only a few comprehensive and freely available aging datasets for these applications.<br>To our knowledge, the dataset presented in the following is one of the largest published to date. It contains over 3 billion data points from 228 commercial NMC/C+SiO lithium-ion cells aged for more than a year under a wide range of operating conditions. We investigate calendar and cyclic aging and also apply different driving cycles to some of the cells. The dataset includes result data (such as the remaining usable capacity or impedance measured in check-ups) and raw data (i.e., measurement logs with two-second resolution).<br>The data can be used in a wide range of applications, for example, to model battery degradation, gain insight into lithium plating, optimize operation strategies, or test battery impedance or state estimation algorithms using machine learning or Kalman filtering.</p>

Comet fading begins beyond Saturn
<p>The discovery probability of long-period comets (LPCs) passing near the Sun is highest during their first passage and then declines, or fades, during subsequent return passages. Comet fading is largely attributed to devolatilization and fragmentation via thermal processing within 2-3 AU of the Sun (1 AU being the Earth-Sun distance). Here our numerical simulations show that comet observing campaigns miss vast numbers of LPCs making returning passages through the Saturn region (near 10 AU) because these comets fade during prior, even more distant passages exterior to Saturn and thus elude detection. Consequently, comet properties significantly evolve at solar distances much larger than previously considered, and this offers new insights into the physical and dynamical properties of LPCs, both near and far from Earth.</p>

Pelage is moderately long, soft, and lustrous, with shortish blackish guard hairs mixed throughout. Dorsum is brownish gray, speckled with buff that is a mix of dark gray underfur and overhairs with brown tips and buffy bands, being dark gray for the most part. Sides are paler grayish brown and fade into ventral pelage. Sides of muzzle are white. Venter is grayish white or dark grayish white, although some are grayish buff, with gray hairs and unpigmented tips or unpigmented altogether, respectively. Juveniles are duller and darker, with more grayish white underparts. Feet are long and slender, with white digits. Ears are large, covered in short unpigmented hair, rubbery, and gray and brown hues. Tail is 88-102% of head-body length and mainly bicolored, brownish gray to blackish gray dorsally and glossy white ventrally, with white tip most of the time. Scrotum is gray. Skull is large, with long and wide rostrum and narrow zygomatic plate. Fleas (e.g. Sigmactenus, Stivalius, Musserella, and Dasypsyllus), ticks (Rhipicephalus) pseudoscorpions (Magachernes and Chiridiochernes), and nematodes (Bunomystrongylus and Sibulura) have been recorded from the Montane Hill Rat. A computational study of accelerating, steady and fading negative streamers in ambient air
<p>This dataset contains the data used to generate the results presented in the article "A computational study of accelerating, steady and fading negative streamers in ambient air". Data from: A significant component of ageing (DNA damage) is reflected in fading breeding colors: an experimental test using innate antioxidant mimetics in painted dragon lizards
A decade ahead of their time, von Schantz and coworkers united sexual selection and free radical biology by identifying causal links between deep-rooted physiological processes that dictate resistance to toxic waste from oxidative metabolism (reactive oxygen species), and phenotypic traits, such as ornaments. Ten years later, these ideas have still only been tested with indirect estimates of free radical levels (oxidative stress) subsequent to the action of innate and dietary antioxidants. Here we measure net superoxide (a selection pressure for antioxidant production) and experimentally manipulate superoxide antioxidation using a synthetic mimetic of superoxide dismutase, Eukarion 134 (EUK). We then measure the toxic effect of superoxide in terms of DNA erosion and concomitant loss of male breeding coloration in the lizard, Ctenophorus pictus. Control males suffered more DNA damage than EUK-males. Spectroradiometry showed that male coloration is lost in relation to superoxide and covaries with DNA erosion; in control males these variables explained 72 % of color loss, whereas in EUK males, the fading of coloration was unaffected by superoxide and unrelated to DNA damage. Thus, EUK's powerful antioxidation removes the erosion effect of superoxide on coloration and experimentally verifies the prediction that colors reflect innate capacity for antioxidation.
