Evolution of fault reactivation potential in the greater Ruhr region (Germany). Results from analytical and numerical studies.

This dataset presents results of analytical-probabilistic and numerical studies on the evolution of fault reactivation potential in the greater Ruhr region in western Germany. The dataset includes shapefile of major faults in the greater Ruhr region, with their specific dip angles, strike values, slip tendencies, dilation tendencies, fracture susceptibilities, and reduced-risk dilation tendencies. The results of long-term coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical simulations on two conceptual geothermal systems based on the two most prevailing fault architectures in the greater Ruhr region are also included in the dataset. The model results are saved with the COMSOL Multiphysics software format, where the simulations were carried out.

Please check the README files for a detailed explanation of both datasets.

_________________________________

Update on 06/11/2024

New version includes only one updated fully coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical model with a NW-SE-striking fault and a finer mesh.

Frictional properties of feldspar-chlorite altered gouges and implications for fault reactivation in hydrothermal systems

As particularly common minerals in granites, the presence of feldspar and altered feldspar-chlorite gouges at hydrothermal conditions have important implications in fault strength and reactivation. We present laboratory observations of frictional strength and stability of feldspar (K-feldspar and albite) and altered feldspar-chlorite gouges under conditions representative of deep geothermal reservoirs to evaluate the impact on fault stability. Velocity-stepping experiments are performed at a confining stress of 95 MPa, pore pressures of 35–90 MPa and temperatures of 120–400°C representative of in situ conditions for such reservoirs. Our experiment results show that the feldspar gouge is frictionally strong (μ~0.71) at all experimental temperatures (~120–400℃) but transitions from velocity-strengthening to velocity-weakening at T>120°C. Increasing the pore pressure increases the friction coefficient (~0.70-0.87) and the gouge remains velocity weakening, but this weakening decreases as pore pressures increase. The presence of alteration-sourced chlorite leads to a transition from velocity weakening to velocity strengthening in the mixed gouge at experimental temperatures and pore pressures. As a ubiquitous mineral in reservoir rocks, feldspar is shown to potentially contribute to unstable sliding over ranges in temperature and pressure typical in deep hydrothermal reservoirs. These findings emphasize that feldspar minerals may increase the potential for injection-induced seismicity on pre-existing faults if devoid of chlorite alteration.

Temperature and fluid pressurization effects on frictional stability of shale faults reactivated by hydraulic fracturing in the Changning Block, Southwest China

A shale fault reactivated during multi-stage hydraulic fracturing in the Changning block in the Sichuan Basin, southwest China accompanied a cluster of small earthquakes with the largest reaching ML ~0.8. We illuminate the underlying mechanisms of fault reactivation through measurements of frictional properties on simulated fault gouge under hydrothermal conditions. Velocity-stepping experiments were performed at a confining pressure of 60 MPa, temperatures from 30 to 300 ℃, pore fluid pressures from 10 to 55 MPa and shear velocities between 0.122 and 1.22 μm/s. Results show that the gouge is frictionally strong with coefficient of friction of 0.6-0.7 across all experimental conditions. At observed in-situ pore fluid pressure (30 MPa), the slip stability response is characterized by velocity strengthening at temperatures of 30-200 ℃ and velocity weakening at temperatures of 250-300 ℃. Increasing the pore fluid pressure can increase values of (a – b) at temperatures ≥ 200 ℃, narrowing the temperature range where velocity weakening occurs. At the in-situ temperature (90℃), the simulated gouge shows only velocity strengthening behavior and aseismic slip at elevated pore fluid pressures, contrary to the observed seismicity. We postulate that the aseismic slip at elevated pore fluid pressures may trigger seismicity by activating adjacent earthquake-prone faults.
