Oyster and associated fauna counts and lengths from restored and reference reefs in the coastal bays of Virginia, 2005-2019

Oyster and associated reef fauna counts and lengths were sampled at 16 natural reference reefs and 61 restored shell plant reefs located at 18 sites in the Virginia Coast Reserve. Overfishing and disease decimated oyster reefs in the Virginia Coast Reserve in the 1900s. Reference reefs were defined as remnant reefs that naturally recovered in the early 2000s to develop the pronounced vertical structure and multiple oyster size classes that represent the desired endpoint of restoration efforts. Nearly every year since 2003, The Nature Conservancy and Virginia Marine Resource Commission have constructed oyster reefs in intertidal areas in the VCR. To construct the restored reefs, practitioners applied dredged, fossilized oyster shell to intertidal locations chosen for their bottom stability and accessibility (locations lacked oysters prior to construction). Whelk shell supplemented the oyster shell at 9 of the restored reefs.
Global Climate Change Impacts on the Vegetation and Fauna of Mangrove Forested Ecosystems in Florida (FCE): Nekton Portion from March 2000 to April 2004
Depth is measured at 3 random locations within each net at time of set. All other variables (salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen) are measured at the river bank adjacent to each net also at the time of set. Global Climate Change Impacts on the Vegetation and Fauna of Mangrove Forested Ecosystems in Florida (FCE): Nekton Mass from March 2000 to April 2004
Bottomless lift nets are buried within the mangrove forest floor and raised remotely on slack high spring tides to enclose a 6m2 area. As the tide ebbs, fishes retreat into a subtidal refuge cleared when the tide has fallen. Three replicate nets have been sampled at 3 locations along a salinity gradient on Shark River for 4 years. Small resident forage fish and grass shrimp dominate the collections. Exotic species and estuarine transient species that use the estuary as a nursery are rare within the assemblage of fishes that routinely use the flooded forest.

Reference reefs were defined as remnant reefs that naturally recovered in the early 2000s to develop the pronounced vertical structure and multiple oyster size classes that represent the desired endpoint of restoration efforts. Nearly every year since 2003, The Nature Conservancy and Virginia Marine Resource Commission have constructed oyster reefs in intertidal areas in the VCR. To construct the restored reefs, practitioners launched dredged, fossilized oyster shell from barges to intertidal locations chosen for their bottom stability and accessibility (locations lacked oysters prior to construction). Whelk shell supplemented the oyster shell at some of the restored reefs. TNC practitioners monitor select restored and reference reefs annually for adult and spat live oysters, adult and spat box oysters, mud crabs, mud snails, oyster drills, live clams, and mussels.
Count data of air-breathing fauna from visual transect surveys including water temperature, time, sea and weather conditions in Shark Bay Marine Park, Western Australia from February 2008 to July 2014
This dataset provides information on the relative abundances of air breathing fauna (dugongs, dolphins, sea snakes, marine birds, and sea turtles) in the study area of the Eastern Gulf of Shark Bay, Western Australia. The dataset comprises transects that quantify animal abundances in three microhabitats (shallow seagrass banks, seagrass bank edges, and deep sandy channels). These microhabitats vary in their food supply as well as their potential to facilitate or inhibit detection and escape from predators, mainly the tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier). As a result these data have been used to examine risk-specific habitat use behaviors of these fauna, in addition to general abundance estimates.
Conservation and management of migratory fauna and dams in tropical streams of Puerto Rico
1. Compared to most other tropical regions, Puerto Rico appears to have dammed its running waters decades earlier and to a greater degree. The island has more large dams per unit area than many countries in both tropical and temperate regions (e.g., 3x that of the U.S.), and the peak rate of large dam construction occurred two and three decades prior to reported peak rates in Latin America, Asia and Africa.2. Puerto Rico is a potential window into the future of freshwater migratory fauna in tropical regions, given the island's extent and magnitude of dam development and the available scientific information on ecology and management of the island's migratory fauna.3. We review ecology, management and conservation of migratory fauna in relation to dams in Puerto Rico. Our review includes a synthesis of recent and unpublished observations on upstream effects of large dams on migratory fauna and an analysis of patterns in free crest spillway discharge across Puerto Rican reservoirs. Analyses suggest that large dams with rare spillway discharge cause near, not complete, extirpation of upstream populations of migratory fauna. They also suggest several management and conservation issues in need of further research and consideration. These include research on the costs, benefits and effectiveness of simple fish/shrimp passage designs involving simulating spillway discharge and the appropriateness of establishing predatory fishes in reservoirs of historically fishless drainages. Chug valley flora and fauna
<p><strong>Short description: </strong>This collection of videos, audio and photo files displays the flora and fauna of the Chug valley between 2012 and 2017. In particular, it focuses on the species that are used for various purposes. The following sections describe the hunting practice and the collection of vegetable forest produce. The translated, transcribed and glossed texts and accompanying sound files describe the past practices of collecting beeswax and collecting stinging nettle, and the contemporary practices of collecting tadpoles, frogs and fish; collecting giant hornets; hunting takin; and hunting porcupine.</p> <p>This material is made freely available to everyone for informative or scientific purposes as long as the source (this DOI) / the collectors are properly credited. Entomological identification of the cadaver fauna of wolf and lynx carcasses in Germany between 2014-2021
The frequency of illegal killings of animals that are under special protection in Germany is continuously increasing. Especially the carnivores wolf and lynx are strongly threatened by humans. To counteract these developments, it is necessary to investigate and prosecute such offenses. An important clue for police investigations is the time of death of the deceased animal. Forensic entomology makes use of the knowledge of temperature-dependent development rates as well as succession patterns of necrophagous flies and beetles and to determine an approximate time of death. While the carcass fauna of other species as well as humans is well studied, the composition of insects on wolves and lynx worldwide has not yet been deciphered. The aim of this work is to investigate the carcass fauna of wolf and lynx. For this purpose, the species composition of insects from 70 wolf carcasses and 8 lynx carcasses was analysed with respect to different habitat types, decomposition stages, and seasons. This data set provides extensive knowledge of the arthropod fauna on wolf and lynx carcasses. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This dataset is associated with BES Bird Monitoring Bird Monitoring Project: ================= The BES Bird Monitoring Project is a breeding bird survey designed to find out what birds are found in the breeding season in Baltimore and where. Our monitoring efforts will show associations among block group socioeconomic variables, land cover, land use, and habitat features with breeding bird abundance, to provide information for land managers on possible consequences of land use changes on bird communities. A distinguishing feature of the bird monitoring at BES LTER, relative to other urban bird work, is the capacity for long-term monitoring of features at multiple scales through links to other parts of the project. Different processes influence habitat for birds at different scales, e.g. ongoing household level human decision-making at lot scale vs. block or neighborhood scale abandonment/re-development. Our project seeks to understand how these processes impact bird occurrence, abundance, and composition differ at the lot, block and neighborhood scale. The database consists of four tables. Sites, Surveys, Taxalist, and Birds. Sites records thje sites and their characteristics. Surveys describe the actual outings or sampling sessions. They describe the weather, the temperature, the sites visited. Taxalist provides the integration of speciaies abbreviations and common names, and Birds describes the actual sightings, linking to the other three tables. Patch occupancy of stream fauna across a land cover gradient in the southern Appalachians, USA
Field sampling of four functionally important focal stream consumers within the Little Tennessee River Basin took place in thirty-seven stream reaches between May - July 2009. Sampled reaches all drained an area less than 17 km2, and land cover varied among these reaches. This data was used to model patch occupancy to examine factors that best predicted the prevalence of the four groups.
