Similarity network fusion to identify phenotypes of small for gestational age fetuses

<p>Fetal growth restriction (FGR) affects 5-10% of pregnancies, is the largest contributor to fetal death, and can have long-term consequences for the child.&nbsp;Implementation of a standard clinical classification system is hampered by the&nbsp;multiphenotypic spectrum of small fetuses with substantial differences in perinatal risks. Machine learning and multiomics data can potentially revolutionize clinical decision-making in FGR by identifying new phenotypes. Herein, we describe a cluster analysis of FGR based on an unbiased machine-learning method. Our results&nbsp;<em>confirm</em>&nbsp;the existence of two subtypes of human FGR with distinct molecular and clinical features based on multi-omic analysis. In addition, we demonstrated that clusters generated by machine learning significantly outperform single data subtype analysis and biologically support the current clinical classification in predicting adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Our approach can aid in the refinement of clinical classification systems for FGR supported by molecular and clinical signatures.&nbsp;</p>

Raw data fort the article: FLUOROSCOPY-GUIDED BILIARY PROCEDURES IN A PREGNANT, LIVER TRANSPLANT PATIENT: FETUS RADIATION PROTECTION

<p>We report three cases of clinically necessary, fluoroscopy-guided, percutaneous biliary procedures performed safely in a pregnant, liver transplant recipient using three different angiography suites. The uterine cumulative equivalent dose was 0.25 mSv, a value obtained by adding the doses of the three procedures described above, and which is relatively low when compared with the naturally occurring background radiation exposure for a 9-month pregnancy (~0.5-1 mSv). Our experience shows that staff knowledge, awareness and liaison promote the application of all dose reduction strategies possible while still achieving the clinical aim despite using different angiographic equipment.</p>

microRNA profiling of amniotic fluid samples from CAKUT fetuses

<p><strong>Summary</strong></p> <p>Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) is the leading cause of childhood end-stage renal disease and a significant cause of chronic kidney disease in adults. Genetic and environmental factors have been shown to influence CAKUT development, but the known disease mechanism remains incomplete. Our goal is to identify affected pathways and networks in CAKUT&nbsp;through multi-omics analysis, including miRNome, peptidome and proteome data. The peptidome and proteome data of the corresponding samples were previously published [pmid: 32750455, pmid: 33987838].</p> <p><strong>Study design</strong></p> <p>Amniotic fluid samples were collected in a prospective multicenter observational study focusing on fetal bilateral CAKUT as part of a <a title="clinical trial" href="https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02675686">clinical trial</a>. In addition, 21 samples were collected from non-CAKUT individuals. The severity was defined based on the renal status after 2 years of postnatal clinical follow-up.</p> <p>The total RNA was isolated using the&nbsp;Agilent RNA 6000 Pico kit protocol (5067-1513)&nbsp;and&nbsp;microRNAs were profiled using&nbsp;Agilent microRNA slides (Sanger miRBase release 21). The samples were labelled&nbsp;and hybridized according to the Agilent's microRNA Complete Labeling and Hybridization Kit protocol (5190-0456), followed by Spike-ins with the Agilent's microRNA Spike-In Kit protocol (5190-1934) and analyzed using Aligent's High-Resolution Microarray Scanner GS2505_C. Features were called using the Agilent Feature Extraction software (version 11.0.1.1) and sample intensities were&nbsp;normalized using quantile normalization (RMA).</p>

Late term fetus caudal luring behavior in a pitviper

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>With the advent of powerful imaging tools, the prenatal behavior of vertebrates is far more complex than previously believed, especially concerning humans, other mammals, and birds. Surprisingly, the fetal behavior of squamate reptiles (lizards, snakes, and amphisbaenians), a group of over 11,000 extant species, are largely understudied. Using ultrasonography, 18 late-term pregnant copperhead snakes (<em>Agkistrodon contortrix</em>) from a single population were inspected for fecundity (number of fetuses). Unexpectedly, during the ultrasound procedure that involved 97 fetuses, we observed sinusoidal tail movements in 11 individuals from eight different copperhead mothers. These movements were indistinguishable from caudal luring, a mimetic ambush predatory strategy which is exhibited by newborn copperheads and other snakes. Caudal luring is initiated shortly after birth and is employed to attract susceptible vertebrate prey. Using the same ultrasound equipment and methods, we tested for this behavior in two species of rattlesnakes (genus <em>Crotalus</em>) not known to caudal lure and none of the late-term fetuses showed any type of tail movements. Prenatal movements in humans and other vertebrates are known to be important for musculoskeletal and sensorimotor development. The fetal behaviors we describe for copperheads, and possibly other snakes, may be similarly important and influence early survival and subsequent fitness.</span></p>

The relationship between umbilical–portal–systemic venous shunt and outcome in 11 fetuses

<p class="src">Objective: To investigate the relationship between congenital umbilical–portal–systemic venous shunt (UPSVs) and fetal outcome.</p> <p class="src">Methods: The ultrasonographic and genetic characteristics of 11 cases of UPSVS were retrospectively analyzed and followed up to postnatal.</p> <p class="src">Results: Four cases of ductus venosus -- systemic shunt (DVSS), one case of extrahepatic portal -- systemic shunt (EHPSS), and one case of umbilical systemic shunt (USS) combined with intrahepatic portal-systemic shunt (IHPSS), six cases of intrahepatic portal-systemic shunt (IHPSS) were observed. chromosomal abnormalities were observed in 9.1% (1/11), other ultrasonic abnormalities in 54.5% (6/11), cardiothoracic ratio increase in 45.5% (5/11), fetal growth restriction in 36.4% (4/11), edema was in 9.1% (1/11) and live birth was in 72.7% (8/11).</p> <p class="src">Conclusion: The incidence of IHPSS is the highest and the outcome is the best. Shunt of DVSS and IHPSS can be closed spontaneously after birth. When the prenatal diagnosis is congenital UPSVs, chromosomal abnormalities and other ultrasonic abnormalities should be required further examination, and the growth and development of the fetus should be closely monitored.</p>
