Data from: A field experiment exploring disturbance-and-recovery, and restoration methodology of Zostera capensis to support its role as a coastal protector
<p>This DRYAD data set covers statistical analysis for the study, "Seagrass restoration experiment to support coastal protection." </p> <p>Dataset attached covers row data regarding field experiments carried out to demonstrate the time needed for the seagrass to recover after disturbance (imitation of anthropogenic impact). The data is centered on showing the evolution (increase) of seagrass shoot density after a quantified period (time series over a year) where the pressure to seagrass is halted. Halting of pressure would resemble a total ban or reduction of anthropogenic impact of digging and revolving of seagrass; action carried out by communities, aiming to collect clams and other shellfish. This data covers also variation in sediments and epiphytes. </p> <p>Additional data is provided on the seagrass restoration methodology that was added to the above-mentioned experiment. The IUCN Red listed Vulnerable seagrass species, <em>Zostera capensis</em> was tested using the plug method (a sediment-based methodology). Two size plugs, made of PVC tube, were tested: 4.5 cm and 7.5 cm diameter size, over a 12-month period (measurements carried out on four occasions). The 7.5 PVC tube experiment revealed a higher survival rate and is therefore a more suitable method for future <em>Z. capensis </em>restoration in impacted areas.</p> <p>These data can be re-used as long as it cites the original data (this paper). To comply with best practices, we recommend mentioning the source of the data.</p>
Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) Catalog of Periodic Variable Stars
<p> Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) Catalog of Periodic Variable Stars<br> Xiaodian Chen, Shu Wang, Licai Deng, Richard de Grijs and Ming Yang</p> <p> We have compiled the first all-sky mid-infrared variable-star catalog based on Wide-field<br> Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) five-year survey data. Requiring more than 100 detections<br> for a given object, 50,282 carefully and robustly selected periodic variables are discovered,<br> of which 34,769 (69%) are new. Most are located in the Galactic plane and near the equatorial<br> poles. A method to classify variables based on their mid-infrared light curves is established<br> using known variable types in the General Catalog of Variable Stars. Careful classification of<br> the new variables results in a tally of 21,427 new EW-type eclipsing binaries, 5654 EA-type <br> eclipsing binaries, 1312 Cepheids, and 1231 RR Lyraes. By comparison with known variables <br> available in the literature, we estimate that the misclassi- fication rate is 5% and 10% for<br> short- and long-period variables, respectively. A detailed comparison of the types, periods, <br> and amplitudes with variables in the Catalina catalog shows that the independently obtained <br> classifications parameters are in excellent agreement. Exploring multitrophic interactions in oilseed rape fields reveals the prevailing role of Carabidae
<p>In cropped fields, birds are often at the highest position in the food chain, feeding on pest arthropods and their intermediate predators in a process known as intraguild predation. The net effects of bird predation on phytophagous insect populations (feeding on plants) are difficult to predict without comprehensively describing prey-predator communities and their complex interplay. We sampled bird and arthropod communities in 30 oilseed rape fields in the spring of 2019 and 2020 in France. To assess the top-down control of arthropods by birds, we used a vertebrate exclusion experiment. Using a taxonomic and functional trait-based approach, we determined the direct and indirect influences of birds on arthropod predators and phytophagous insect populations in arable crops. We observed a negative relationship between the abundance of Carabidae and phytophagous insects but not with the other predator group suggesting the key role of Carabidae on phytophagous insects in agroecosystem. We found no statistical evidence of intraguild predation from birds towards intermediate predators. Despite the lack of overall effect of predator functional diversity on their prey, we highlighted the negative relationship between the functional complementarity (through functional evenness) of Carabidae and the abundance of phytophagous insects. This result suggests that functional complementarity between Carabidae species could help to reduce phytophagous insect populations. We analysed the effect of agricultural practices on these multitrophic interactions, showing that pesticide intensity only had detrimental effects on Carabidae abundance, while the frequency of tillage did not affect the studied communities. Complementary indices used to depict communities are helpful to better understand the mechanisms underlying trophic relationships.</p>
Exploring Gender Perspectives on Parenthood Experiences among Fathers and Mothers in the ICT Field
<p>This paper investigates the challenges encountered by mothers and fathers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) field regarding parenthood, with a focus on gender perspectives. A survey was conducted with practitioners in the ICT field to explore their perceptions of parenting challenges. Findings indicate that while male practitioners perceive the organizational culture as inclusive towards parents, most women do not share this perception. Mothers express insecurity about the impact of maternity leave on their careers and report receiving fewer job opportunities because they have children, whereas most fathers do not share these concerns. However, the majority of ICT practitioners who are parents report receiving support from their coworkers regarding their parental responsibilities. The analysis highlights common challenges faced by parents in the ICT industry, including balancing work and family responsibilities, workplace discrimination against women, and a lack of organizational support for parents. Nevertheless, there is a growing acknowledgment of the need for inclusive policies and mutual support to address these challenges.</p>

Exploring the ontological links between Human Ecodynamics and field Archaeology through the integration of archaeological reports into DataARC's landscape ontology (MPhil by research thesis)
<p>The Zip file contains another 8 different folders. In each one, you will find the images and charts from Skútustaðir’s Archaeological Reports (permalink to the reports: https://www.nabohome.org/cgi-bin/explore.pl?seq=3). Each folder corresponds to one report. File’s names are abbreviated. Please, see the attached metadata for a full understanding of the abbreviated names. These images and charts were produced as part of the creation of a dataset for my MPhil thesis.</p> <p>Project_files_metadata provides all the information necessary for understanding the Zip file (and its files) and the CSV.</p> <p>The CSV file contains the dataset created and used for my MPhil thesis.</p> <p>The project was carried out within the DataARC Project as an MPhil thesis. The thesis explores the creation of (archaeo-historical) knowledge using data within a general framework of Big Data. Human Ecodynamics is the <em>paradigm </em>which guides the DataARC Project. My project explores how to link grey data from archaeological reports into a general computational ontology developed for representing Human Ecodynamics by making use of multiple datasets.</p>
