Ionization rate simulation data for "Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows"

<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>This is a set of 3d data containing ionization rates computed from Hyburn hydrodynamic simulations&nbsp;contained in a Matlab .mat file, along with a plot in both .png and Matlab .fig format, and a Matlab script for plotting.</p> <p>This data is used in&nbsp;figure&nbsp;5 of the paper &quot;Standing Shock Prevents Propagation of Sparks in Supersonic Explosive Flows&quot;.</p> <p>Electric sparks and explosive flows have long been associated with each other. Flowing dust particles originate charge through contact and separate based on inertia, resulting in strong electric fields supporting sparks. These sparks can cause explosions in dusty environments, especially those rich in carbon, such as coal mines and grain elevators. Recent observations of explosive events in nature and decompression experiments indicate that supersonic flows of explosions may alter the electrical discharge process. Shocks may suppress parts of the hierarchy of the discharge phenomena, such as leaders. In our decompression experiments, a shock tube ejects a flow of gas and particles into an expansion chamber. We imaged an illuminated plume from the decompression of a mixture of argon and &lt;100&nbsp;mg&nbsp;of diamond particles and observe sparks occurring below the sharp boundary of a condensation cloud. We also performed hydrodynamics simulations of the decompression event that provide insight into the conditions supporting the observed behavior. Simulation results agree closely with the experimentally observed Mach disk shock shape and height. This represents direct evidence that the sparks are sculpted by the outflow. The spatial and temporal scale of the sparks transmit an impression of the shock tube flow, a connection that could enable novel instrumentation to diagnose currently inaccessible supersonic granular phenomena.</p> <p><strong>Accessing Data</strong></p> <p>The .mat file can be opened in Matlab to examine data. UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Survey - Tidal Volumetric Flow Rate

These data describe annual estimates of tidal volumetric flow rate collected as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration mitigation monitoring program designed to evaluate compliance of the restoration project with conditions of the SONGS permit. Monitoring began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Wetlands in San Diego County, CA. The tidal volumetric flow rate into the wetland between low and high tide was sampled 24 times annually along a cross section transect of the main channel located 0.9 km from the inlet.

Biogeochemical rate data and sediment properties of samples used for a controlled flow through experiment testing the effect of nitrate on organic matter decomposition, PIE LTER, Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts.

In this dataset, we used a controlled flow-through reactor (FTR) experiment to test the role of nitrate as an electron acceptor, and its effect on organic matter decomposition and the associated microbial community in salt marsh sediments. Organic matter decomposition significantly increased in response to nitrate, even at sediment depths typically considered resistant to decomposition. The use of isotope tracers suggests this pattern was largely driven by stimulated denitrification. Nitrate addition also significantly altered the microbial community and decreased alpha diversity, selecting for taxa belonging to groups known to reduce nitrate and oxidize more complex forms of organic matter. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy further supported these results, suggesting that nitrate facilitated decomposition of complex organic matter compounds into more bioavailable forms. Taken together, these results suggest the existence of organic matter pools that only become accessible with nitrate and would otherwise remain stabilized in the sediment. The existence of such pools could have important implications for carbon storage, since greater decomposition rates as N loading increases may result in less overall burial of organic-rich sediment. Given the extent of nitrogen loading along our coastlines, it is imperative that we better understand the resilience of salt marsh systems to nutrient enrichment, especially if we hope to rely on salt marshes, and other blue carbon systems, for long-term carbon storage.

Alya Eulerian LES results fire extinction nozzle low mass flow rate (paraview files)

<p>The present data complements the&nbsp;Deliverable 5.2. Toolchain V2 to couple CFD and multiple&nbsp;droplet and continuous droplet models.It includes a paraview file (*pvd)&nbsp;for the&nbsp;continuous droplet model (Eulerian-Eulerian) with&nbsp;an inlet mass flow rate of &nbsp;0.05 kg/s.&nbsp;</p> <p>The unstructured mesh employed to simulate the injector system is composed by 81.6&nbsp;million tetrahedrons that include the internal ow in the nozzle and the discharged atmosphere. Estimation of groundwater flow rate by an actively heated fiber optics based thermal response test in a grouted borehole

<p>The dataset contains the numerical&nbsp;data and the <em>in-situ</em> measurements in the manuscript titled &quot;Estimation of groundwater flow rate by an actively heated fiber-optics-based thermal response test in a grouted borehole&quot;. The data is stored in MAT files, which are Binary MATLAB files. There are a series of codes used in this manuscript to estimate groundwater flow rates. The codes were written in MATLAB Live Script, version 2021b.</p> <ul> <li>The numerical&nbsp;data contains temperatures of the heating stage in&nbsp;different thermal response tests in a numerical model, which considers the borehole effects. The model is set up by&nbsp;COMSOL Multiphysics, and a series of flow rates&nbsp;is set to the model&nbsp;respectively for&nbsp;different thermal response tests.</li> <li>The <em>in-situ</em> measurements include&nbsp;temperatures of the heating stage in an actively heated fiber-optics-based thermal response test, which was performed in July 2021 in the grouted borehole, which is located in the lower section of the Sima bend of the Yangtze River. The temperature for the flow rate estimation&nbsp;was thinned to 120 s records from 10s records for the limited computing resources.</li> <li>The <em>data_process.mlx</em>&nbsp;provides pre-processing for the observational data recorded by&nbsp;Silixa Ultima-M MK2 DTS. The&nbsp;<em>estimation_process.mlx </em>gives a groundwater flow estimation case in&nbsp;a grouted borehole.</li> </ul>

<h3>Data and code for performing analyses and plotting figures for "Bilateral flows and rates of international migration of scholars for 210 countries and areas for the period 1998-2020"</h3> <p>The code and data can also be found at https://github.com/MPIDR/Global-flows-and-rates-of-international-migration-of-scholars/</p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong>: A lack of comprehensive migration data is a major barrier for understanding the causes and consequences of migration processes, including for specific groups like high-skilled migrants. We leverage large-scale bibliometric data from Scopus and OpenAlex to trace the global movements of scholars. Based on our empirical validations, we develop pre-processing steps and offer best practices for the measurement and identification of migration events. We have prepared a publicly accessible dataset that shows a high level of correlation between the counts of scholars in Scopus and OpenAlex for most countries. Although OpenAlex has more extensive coverage of non-Western countries, the highest correlations with Scopus are observed in Western countries. We share aggregated yearly estimates of international migration rates and of bilateral flows for 210 countries and areas worldwide for the period 1998-2020 and describe the data structure and usage notes. We expect that the publicly shared dataset will enable researchers to further study the causes and the consequences of migration of scholars to forecast the future mobility of global academic talent.</p>

Influence of rotation speed on flow field and hydraulic noise in the conduit of a vertical axial-flow pump under low flow rate condition

<p>The complex flow inside the axial-flow pump device will cause the problem of hydraulic noise, in order to explore the influence law of rotation speed on the internal flow characteristics and hydraulic noise of the axial-flow pump conduit, the combination of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Acoustics (CA) is used to numerically solve the flow field and internal sound field in the pump device. The results show that the flow in the elbow inlet conduit is smooth at different rotation speeds, and there is no obvious unstable flow. The higher the rotation speed, the more disordered the flow pattern in the left half of the elbow, which intensifies the unstable flow in the straight outlet conduit. The impeller is the main sound source of the internal hydrodynamic noise of the vertical axial-flow pump device, when the sound source propagates upstream and downstream along the conduit, the Total Sound Source Intensity (TSSI) will gradually decay with the increase of distance, the greater the rotation speed is, the faster the Total Sound Source Intensity (TSSI) will decay. When the rotation speed is increased from 1450 r/min to 2200 r/min, the TSSI in the straight outlet conduit is attenuated by 8.9 dB, 13.9 dB and 16.0 dB respectively, and the TSSI in the elbow inlet conduit is attenuated by 11.0 dB, 13.5 dB and 25.9 dB respectively. The vortex structure in the conduit will induce flow noise and delay the attenuation of TSSI in the propagation process, with the increase of rotation speed, this delay will be more obvious.</p>

Riverine flow rate drives widespread convergence in the shell morphology of imperiled freshwater mussels

<p>Frequent and strong morphological convergence suggests that determinism tends to supercede historical contingencies in evolutionary radiations. For many lineages living within the water-column of rivers and streams, hydrodynamic forces drive widespread morphological convergence. Living below the sediment-water interface may release organisms from these hydrodynamic pressures, permitting a broad array of morphologies and thus less convergence. However, here, we show that the semi-infaunal freshwater mussels have environmentally determined convergence in shell morphology. Using 3D morphometric data from 715 individuals among 164 Nearctic species, we find that species occurring in rivers with high flow rates have evolved traits that resist dislodgement from their burrowed position in the streambed: thicker shells for their body size, with the thickest sector of the shell being the most deeply buried. Species occurring in low-flow environments have evolved thinner and more uniformly thickened shells, corresponding to an alternative adaptation to dislodgement: increased burrowing efficiency. Within species, individuals also show increased shell thickness for their body size at higher flow rates, suggesting that ecophenotypy may, in part, be an important mechanism for establishing populations in new environments and thus evolutionary divergence in this highly imperiled invertebrate group.</p>
