The use of food swaps to encourage healthier online food choices

<p>Dataset for&nbsp;The use of food swaps to encourage healthier online food choices.</p> <p>Online grocery stores offer opportunities to encourage healthier food choices at the moment that consumers put a product of their choice in their basket. This study aims to examine the effect of a swap offer, Nutri-Score labelling and a descriptive norm message on the healthiness of food choices in such an online food basket. Additionally, it is examined whether these interventions make it more motivating and easier for consumers to select healthier food choices and whether potential effects are moderated by consumers&rsquo; health interest. Hypotheses were tested in a simulated online supermarket. Dutch participants (n=550) chose their preferred product out of six product options for four different categories (breakfast cereals, crackers, pizza and muesli bars). Participants were randomly allocated to one of eight groups based on the interventions (Nutri-Score, swap offer, norm message and the five different combinations). Primary outcome was the difference in nutrient profiling (NP) healthiness score of product choices, for which a lower score represents a healthier product. Results show that a swap offer (NP score M=10.52, SD =16.15) and Nutri-Score labelling (NP score M=15.38, SD=15.24) significantly improved NP healthiness scores compared to the control condition (NP score M=18.03, SD=14.02), whereas a norm message did not (NP score M=17.96, SD=15.15). These findings provide valuable insights for policy makers and practitioners on the implementation of swap offers and Nutri-Score labelling in the online store environment.</p>

Fish resist temptation from junk food: State-dependent diet choice in reproductive Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) facing seasonal fluxes of lipid-rich prey

<p>In ecological sciences, animal diets are often simplified to "resources" or "caloric quantities". However, in the present study, we investigated the optimal foraging strategy of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) when both macro- and micro-nutritional requirements are accounted for. Proteins cannot be synthesized from fatty acids, so the proteins for gonad development must come from other dietary sources. In addition, micronutrients are required in smaller quantities. For example, for cod, arachidonic acid (ARA) acts as a micronutrient precursor for prostaglandins, which is important for reproduction. We formulated a dynamic state-dependent model to make predictions about optimal diet choice and foraging behavior. We applied the model to a case study in the strait between Denmark and Sweden. The model predicted that energy acquired from dietary protein should be twice that acquired from lipids, with a small increase in the lipid requirements when gonads are growing. The model also predicted that the "energy sparing effect of lipids" made it beneficial to engage in risky foraging activity to supplement a lean diet with a little bit of fat. When we re-constructing the model to also optimize ARA uptake, the cod consumed relatively more ARA-rich crabs in the months prior to spawning, despite the otherwise poor energetic value of this prey. In support of the model predictions, field observations indicated that lipid stores reached a peak shortly after the arrival of the lipid-rich migrating herring and the fatty acid signal of these herring were evident in the liver of nearly all cod. Three month later, only half of the cod contained the herring-derived fatty acid signal, supporting the predicted shift in prey type prior to spawning. From these model predictions and field observations, we conclude that, also in the wild, nutritional requirements can be at least as important as pure energy acquisition.</p>

Data from: Choice of resolution by functional trait or taxonomy affects allometric scaling in soil food webs

Belowground organisms often display a shift in their mass-abundance scaling relationships due to environmental factors such as soil chemistry and atmospheric deposition. Here we present new empirical data that show strong differences in allometric scaling according to whether the resolution at the local scale is based on a taxonomic or a functional classification, while only slight differences arise according to soil environmental conditions. For the first time, isometry (an inverse 1∶1 proportion) is recognized in mass-abundance relationships, providing a functional signal for constant biomass distribution in soil biota regardless of discrete trophic levels. Our findings are in contrast to those from aquatic ecosystems, in that higher trophic levels in soil biota are not a direct function of increasing body mass.

Data from: Matching habitat choice in nomadic crossbills appears most pronounced when food is most limiting

Of the various forms of non-random dispersal, matching habitat choice, whereby individuals preferentially reside in habitats where they are best adapted, has relatively little empirical support. Here I use mark-recapture data to test for matching habitat choice in two nomadic ecotypes of North American Red Crossbills (Loxia curvirostra complex) that occur in the lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests in the South Hills, Idaho every summer. Crossbills are adapted for foraging on seeds in conifer cones, and in the South Hills the cones are distinctive, favoring a relatively large bill. During a period when seed was most limiting, only the largest individuals approximating the average size of the locally adapted ecotype remained for a year or more. During a period when seed was less limiting, proportionately more individuals remained and the trend for larger individuals to remain was weaker. Although matching habitat choice is difficult to demonstrate, it likely contributed to the observed patterns. Otherwise, nearly unprecedented intensities of natural selection would be needed. Given the nomadic behavior of most crossbill ecotypes and the heterogeneous nature of conifer seed crops, matching habitat choice should be favored and likely contributes to their adaptation to alternative conifers and rapid diversification.
