Food Pricing Data in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada 2020-2021
<p>This dataset contains data for food prices on several key food items in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador collected using citizen science, from October 2020 to December 2021. Data were collected in different places in the province on different timelines, with some locations receiving regular biweekly data and others having a single date inputted. Spatial Distribution of the International Food Prices: Unexpected Heterogeneity and Randomness
<p>Global <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/agricultural-and-biological-sciences/food-prices">food prices</a> are typically analysed in a time-series framework. We complement this approach by focusing on the spatial <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/economics-econometrics-and-finance/price-dispersion">price dispersion</a> of the country-pair bilateral trade in the international food trade network (<em>IFTN</em>), for ten relevant commodities. The main purposes are to verify if the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/economics-econometrics-and-finance/price-convergence">Law of One Price</a> (<em>LOP</em>) holds and to investigate the emergence of randomness in the price-formation mechanism.</p> <p>We distinguish between the “internal” variance, which indicates the magnitude of price discrimination, and the “external” variance, that is a measure of price dispersion. We find that, for some commodities, spatial price dispersion is remarkable and persistent over time (i.e., failure of the <em>LOP</em>) and that there exists a strict correlation between price spikes and peaks in spatial price variability.</p> <p>We test whether the price distribution can be replicated through a <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/economics-econometrics-and-finance/stochastic-process">stochastic process</a> of extraction. Surprisingly, the actual distribution of prices, for several commodities, is well described by a random distribution. Then, the process of data aggregation is not neutral because the information at the micro-level scale might be lost at the macro-scale, due to the complexity of the <em>IFTN</em>. Finally, we discuss some possible economic explanations of these outcomes and the main methodological, environmental, and policy consequences.</p>
Price discounts on low energy dense foods on food intake and health status
<p>The objective of this study was to observe the effects of a multi-level (30%, 15%, and 0%) randomized discount on fruits, vegetables, and non-caloric beverages on changes in dietary intake. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) comprised an 8-week baseline, a 32-week intervention, and a 16-week follow-up. 24-hour dietary recalls were conducted during the baseline period and before the intervention midpoint. In-person clinical measures were analyzed from Week 8 (end of baseline) and 24 (midpoint). This report is from an interim analysis up to the intervention period midpoint at Week 24, as the study is still ongoing. Participants with BMIs of 24.5-50 kg/m<sup>2</sup> and ages 18-70 years old who were the primary household shoppers were recruited from several New York City supermarkets, starting in September 2018. Of these, we analyzed 20 in the 30% discount group, 25 in the 15% discount group, and 19 in the 0% discount group. The 30% discount group reported greater intake of vegetables (+98.4 g ± 48.9 SD, <em>P </em>= 0.049) and diet soda (+63.3 g ± 29.3, <em>P</em> = 0.035) relative to the baseline period, compared to the 0% discount group. The clinical measures including body weight remained unchanged. The participants who experienced the COVID-19 pandemic had a marginal increase in body weight of 1.5 kg, P = 0.053. In conclusion, we observed a significant increase in intake of vegetables and diet soda in the 30% discount group relative to the 0% discount group.</p>

Additionally, changes in consumer behavior, such as shifts towards plant-based diets and organic foods, also play a role in shaping the market.</p> <p>Policy responses and interventions, such as subsidies, trade agreements, and support for local farmers, are crucial in managing these impacts. Efforts to enhance food security and affordability include promoting sustainable farming practices, improving supply chain resilience, and addressing socio-economic disparities.</p> <p>Overall, the interplay between food prices, availability, and broader economic and environmental factors creates a complex landscape that requires coordinated efforts from policymakers, industry stakeholders, and communities to ensure a stable and equitable food system in the UK.</p>
How distorted food prices discourage a healthy diet
<p>Public policy making for the prevention of diet-related disease is impeded by a lack of evidence on whether poor diets are a matter of personal responsibility or a choice set narrowed by environmental conditions. An important element of the environment is market imperfections in food retail that distort prices. We use a rich dataset on quantities and prices of food purchases in the United States and a structural model of dietary choices to examine variation in diets across households that have different levels of income and live in different neighborhoods. We find that price distortions account for one-third of the gap between the recommended and actual intake of fruits and vegetables. A feasible fiscal intervention that remedies these distortions makes all consumers better off.</p>
FPCA - From mobile app-based crowdsourcing to crowd-trusted food price estimates in Nigeria: pre-processing and post-sampling strategy for optimal statistical inference
<p>Timely and reliable monitoring of commodity food prices is an essential requirement for the assessment of market and food security risks and the establishment of early warning systems, especially in developing economies. However, data from regional or national systems for tracking changes of food prices in sub-Saharan Africa lacks the temporal or spatial richness and is often insufficient to inform targeted interventions. In addition to limited opportunity for [near-]real-time assessment of food prices, various stages in the commodity supply chain are mostly unrepresented, thereby limiting insights on stage-related price evolution. Yet, governments and market stakeholders rely on commodity price data to make decisions on appropriate interventions or commodity-focused investments. Recent rapid technological development indicates that digital devices and connectivity services are becoming affordable for many, including in remote areas of developing economies. This offers a great opportunity both for the harvesting of price data (via new data collection methodologies, such as crowdsourcing/crowdsensing — i.e. citizen-generated data — using mobile apps/devices), and for disseminating it (via web dashboards or other means) to provide real-time data that can support decisions at various levels and related policy-making processes. However, market information that aims at improving the functioning of markets and supply chains requires a continuous data flow as well as quality, accessibility and trust. More data does not necessarily translate into better information. Citizen-based data-generation systems are often confronted by challenges related to data quality and citizen participation, which may be further complicated by the volume of data generated compared to traditional approaches. Following the food price hikes during the first noughties of the 21st century, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) started working on innovative methodologies for real-time food price data collection and analysis in developing countries. The work carried out so far includes a pilot initiative to crowdsource data from selected markets across several African countries, two workshops (with relevant stakeholders and experts), and the development of a spatial statistical quality methodology to facilitate the best possible exploitation of geo-located data. Based on the latter, the JRC designed the Food Price Crowdsourcing Africa (FPCA) project and implemented it within two states in Northern Nigeria. The FPCA is a credible methodology, based on the voluntary provision of data by a crowd (people living in urban, suburban, and rural areas) using a mobile app, leveraging monetary and non-monetary incentives to enhance contribution, which makes it possible to collect, analyse and validate, and disseminate staple food price data in real time across market segments. The granularity and high frequency of the crowdsourcing data open the door to real-time space-time analysis, which can be essential for policy and decision making and rapid response on specific geographic regions. <a href="https://datam.jrc.ec.europa.eu/datam/perm/news/870?rdr=1666109837893">Link to the project</a></p>

Food aid in four European countries: Assessing the price and content of charitable food aid packages
<table> <tbody> <tr> <td> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td><strong>Description</strong></td> <td>The dataset is the result of a study on the content and monetary value of food aid packages distributed by local food aid organisations in four European cities: Antwerp, Barcelona, Budapest and Helsinki. Concretely, three food aid organisations per city, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria of the study, were randomly selected. In each organisation, two types of data were collected: 1) a structured interview with the head or a well-informed volunteer, and 2) four visits in which the content of the food aid packages was registered by a participating researcher. After this, food basket data was used to monetize the food aid products, and where necessary this was supplemented by available online pricing data of supermarkets in the four countries. The interviews were conducted at the location of the organisations and a few organisations also provided some of the information via e-mail or telephone. Although the questions were objective/factual about the history and functioning of the organisations only, some of the answers contain estimations of the interviewee in case when no objective information or data was available. The interview questions were set up in English and discussed with the involved researchers, but the questions were translated and the interviews were conducted in respectively Dutch, Hungarian, Finnish and Spanish. For analysis, the interview answers back to English. The registration of the content of the food aid packages included writing down relevant information about that product (such as volume, expiration date etc.) and to whom the product was given. Food Price Post-Covid19
<p><strong>The spread of the pandemic in late 2019 bring public concerns on food production and food commodity prices.</strong><strong> </strong>Disruptions to food supply chains and stronger demand due to COVID-19 may cause sharp food price increases, which may negatively affect food security. Moreover, developing countries are more vulnerable to food prices vibration and thus, food security. This project aims to visually show the change in domestic prices of basic food in developing countries, specifically since late 2019.</p>
