Dataset and R script for the analysis in the article "Food waste between environmental education, peers, and family influence. Insights from primary school students in Northern Italy", Journal of Cleaner Production
<p>We hereby publish the dataset (with metadata) and the R script (R Core team, 2018) used for implementing the analysis presented in the paper "Food waste between environmental education, peers, and family influence. Insights from primary school students in Northern Italy", <em>Journal of Cleaner Production </em>(Piras et al., 2023). The dataset is provided in csv format with semicolons as separators and "NA" for missing data. The dataset includes all the variables used in at least one of the models presented in the paper, either in the main text or in the Supplementary Material. Other variables gathered by means of the questionnaires included as Supplementary Material of the paper have been removed. The dataset includes inputted values for missing data on independent variables. These were inputted using two approaches: last observation carried forward (LOCF) - preferred when possible - and last observation carried backward (LOCB). The metadata are presented as a PDF file.</p>
European consumers ́ preference and willingness to pay for food products labelled as obtained by a circular farming system -in relation to environmental attitudes and consumption behaviours
<p>Data was collected with questionnaire-based research carried out in Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Spain as part of a European project. The survey questions were designed to obtain the Willingness to pay using 2 different methodologies the discrete choice experiment and the open-end choice experiment. The survey also included questions about consumers environmental attitudes, and consumption behavior (purchase, use and recycling), to identify if them have influence on preferences towards more sustainable food products. The 3 analyzed food products were pork meat, milk and bread, all of them obtained through different agricultural production systems (circular, conventional, and organic agriculture). The sample was stratified in terms of gender and age to be representative to the average population in each country. Furthermore, respondents included in this study were those that are mainly, or in part responsible for the household food shopping. The questionnaire was translated to the languages of the countries involved in the data collection and pre-launched using a pilot sample of 50 consumers in each case study country. Finally, a total of 5,362 validated questionnaires were obtained. Data was collected online using the Qualtrics market research company, and Net panel market company for Hungary from June 2021 to January 2022.</p>

Ridge-cells are raster cells connected to multiple foodsheds, while being able to satisfy their own demand locally. Unconnected single cells are not connected to any other foodshed. Gerational issues in linking family farming production, traditional food in diet, physical activity and obesity in Pacific Islands countries and territories: the case of the Melanesian population on Lifou Island
<p>In the Melanesian culture, traditional activities are organized around family farming, although the lifestyle transition taking place over the last several decades has led to imbalances in diet and physical activity, with both leading to obesity. The aim of this interdisciplinary study was to understand the links between family farming (produced, exchanged, sold, and consumed food), diet (focused on produced, hunted, and caught food), physical activity (sedentary, light, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) and obesity in Melanesian Lifou Island families (parents and children). Forty families, including 142 adults and children, completed individual food frequency questionnaires, wore tri-axial accelerometers for seven continuous days, and had weight and height measured with a bio-impedance device. Qualitative and quantitative interviews were conducted at the household level concerning family farming practices and sociodemographic variables. Multinomial regression analyses and logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. Results showed that family farming production brings a modest contribution to diet and active lifestyles for the family farmers of Lifou Island. The drivers for obesity in these tribal communities were linked to diet in the adults, whereas parental socioeconomic status and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were the main factors associated to overweight and obesity in children. These differences in lifestyle behaviors within families suggest a transition in cultural practices at the intergenerational level. Future directions should consider seasonality and a more in-depth analysis of diet including macro- and micro- nutrients to acquire more accurate information on the intergenerational transition in cultural practices and its consequences on health outcomes in the Pacific region.</p>
Foodscapes - A global clustering of terrestrial food production systems
<p>This repository contains the final outputs from the global <strong>Foodscape</strong> mapping exercise. In this project we aimed to identify broad homologues of foodscape classes, comparable in a minimum set of biophysical and management characteristics, would help to design possible interventions and leverage points for more sustainable agriculture.</p> <p>Provided are maps in spatial geotiff format (.tif) which can be opened in any typical GIS software such as ArcGIC or QGIS. The Resolution is 0.5' degree (WGS 84 or <em>longitude-latitude</em> projection). Both the foodscape map (<em>Foodscapes_combinedGEOTIFF_final.tif</em>) and a reclassified intensity map (<em>Foodscapes_combinedGEOTIFF_intensity.tif</em>) are provided. Accompanied with the tif files are .clr and .qml files, both of which provide layout information on colours used for each code combination in the global maps. The .qml file will be automatically loaded when opening the layer in QGIS.<br> In addition, in the Microsoft Excel sheet "<em>Foodscapes_combinedLEGEND_final.xlsx</em>" a legend with qualitative description and label of each class is provided.</p> <p>If you use this layer in any way, please cite this repository and the describing <a href="https://osf.io/puyzw/">preprint</a>.</p>

Upcycling food ingredients from orange by-products by hot air-microwave drying. Impact on energy consumption.
<p>Currently industrial citrus by-products represent a relevant environmental issue. The main aim of this work was the chemical characterization of the different bioactive compounds obtained after hot air-microwave drying (HAD+MW) of orange by-products, and their further conversion into three <strong>upcycled </strong>ingredients with health-related benefits: aqueous extract, ethanolic extract and <strong>dietary fibre</strong>. Total phenolics, antioxidant capacity, individual phenolic acids, flavonoids, limonin and carotenoids were monitored during blanching and colour extraction steps by analysing fresh by-products and process co-products: an aqueous extract rich in polyphenols and an ethanolic extract rich in carotenoids. After drying, the resulting fibre was characterized in terms of chemical composition, soluble and insoluble dietary fibre content and particle size. Technological properties and colour were compared to those of commercial citrus fibre. Energy and time consumption were compared with conventional hot air drying (HAD). Most polyphenols (50-65 %) and limonin (70 %) were extracted during the blanching step. 86 % of carotenoids were removed by soaking in ethanol. The orange fibre obtained had 71.9 g DF/ 100 g and antioxidant properties (205 mg TE/ Kg<sub>dm</sub>). Whiteness, water retention capacity and oil retention capacity were similar to commercial citrus fibre. HAD+MW reduced drying time and energy consumption by up to 50 % compared to HAD.</p>

<p>This data is output data simulated by the CROVER crop-river coupled model for the scientific paper entitled: “Future Warming Decreases the Benefits of Irrigation in Global Food Production”. Simulations are based on 120-year simulations (1981-2100) using 20 climate projections (four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) (2.6, 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5) × five General Circulation Models (GCMs) (GFDL-ESM2M, HadGEM2-ES, IPSL-CM5A-LR, MIROC-ESM-CHEM, and NorESM1-M)). <p>The VELS study (<strong>V</strong>erzehrsstudie zur <strong>E</strong>rmittlung der Lebensmittelaufnahme von <strong>S</strong>äuglingen und Kleinkindern für die Abschätzung eines akuten Toxizitätsrisikos durch Rückstände von Pflanzenschutzmitteln; VELS) was conducted in 2001/2002. Data were collected from 804 infants, toddlers and children (age group 0.5 to <5 years) in Germany. The food consumed was recorded by the parents as "food as eaten" over a total of 6 days (2x3-day food record with an interval of 3-6 months for toddlers and 4-8 weeks for infants).
