Bird occurrence data collected at 183 sample locations within the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest (HJA) from 2009-present. We used a stratified, systematic, random design to select sample locations. We stratified across elevation, distance to road, and habitat type (plantation or mature/old-growth forest). We conduct point counts on six separate occasions from May – July, which corresponded to spring arrival and subsequent breeding period for the majority of bird species at HJA. Surveys occur between 05:15h and 10:30h and each consists of a 10-min point count where we record all birds seen or heard. The species of all birds seen and heard are recorded as well as all individual squirrels, chipmunks and pikas seen and heard. Survey-level information is also collected at each point count and includes: weather and wind conditions, stream noise, snow cover on the ground, phenology of vine maple and rhododendron. Data collection is ongoing.
Air temperature at core phenology sites and additional bird monitoring sites in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2009 to present
The H.J Andrews phenology study air temperature network includes 16 core phenology sites, 40 core bird sites and 128 auxiliary bird sites. This study examines air temperatures at multiple sites within the Andrews Experimental Forest. Air temperatures were recorded 1.5 m above ground at 184 sites distributed on an 800-m incomplete grid throughout much of the Andrews Forest. Data were collected using automated sensors starting in June of 2009 at 56 sites and in June 2011 128 additional sensors were added. These data document the complex spatial and temporal patterns of air temperature variation within the Andrews Forest, which is governed by multiple processes including inversions, regional air mixing, cold air drainage and pooling, and the effects of vegetation on temperature extremes. The data entities provided indicate various methods of data quality checking over time.
Bird Communities in Forest Openings at Harvard Forest 2014-2015
Currently, many of the most severely declining neotropical migrants in the northeastern United States are disturbance dependent, early-successional species. Much of their decline is attributed to loss of suitable habitat. Large clearcuts (>5.0 ha) are widely considered to be optimal habitat for most shrubland bird species. However, it is well documented that certain species are capable of breeding within significantly smaller patches of habitat (less than 2.0 ha), which are most commonly created through group selection harvest cuttings. The goal of this research is to determine habitat characteristics translatable to habitat value for shrubland birds for use in conservation programs to maximize biological value. This research will provide an assessment of the value of forest openings for shrubland birds, helping to define the suitability of forest canopy openings for specific bird species. This project will describe the conservation value of shrubland openings deemed too small to sustain full suites of specialist shrubland birds by providing threshold patch area values for individual species able to use these smaller patches.
Bird and forest communities in a northern Michigan jack pine stand before and after logging, 2013-2018
This package contains data associated with documentation of breeding-season bird communities in a dry, jack pine and mixed red pine-jack pine forest in Marquette Co., MI. In addition to repeated surveys, 2014-2018, of bird presence in a network of 45 study plots, the package includes vegetation data collected on the same plots 2013-2017. At initiation of the study, the stand was >100 years old and had experienced little or no active management. During the study period, stands were thinned to reduce fire risk, and most jack pine were cut; three plots fell in a control area with no logging. Bird communities and vegetation were sampled repeatedly before and after management activities. Subsequent to the study period, a managed burn affected much of the study area.

Frugivoria: A trait database for birds and mammals exhibiting frugivory across contiguous Neotropical moist forests
Biodiversity in many areas is rapidly shifting and declining as a consequence of global change. As such, there is an urgent need for new tools and strategies to help identify, monitor, and conserve biodiversity hotspots. One way to identify these areas is by quantifying functional diversity, which measures the unique roles of species within a community and is valuable for conservation because of its relationship with ecosystem functioning. Unfortunately, the trait information required to evaluate functional diversity is often lacking and is difficult to harmonize across disparate data sources. Biodiversity hotspots are particularly lacking in this information. To address this knowledge gap, we compiled Frugivoria, a trait database containing dietary, life-history, morphological, and geographic traits, for mammals and birds exhibiting frugivory, which are important for seed dispersal, an essential ecosystem service. Accompanying Frugivoria is an open workflow that harmonizes trait and taxonomic data from disparate sources and enables users to analyze traits in space. This version of Frugivoria contains mammal and bird species found in contiguous moist montane forests and adjacent moist lowland forests of Central and South America– the latter specifically focusing on the Andean states. In total, Frugivoria includes 45,216 unique trait values, including new values and harmonized values from existing databases. Frugivoria adds 23,707 new trait values (8,709 for mammals and 14,999 for birds) for a total of 1,733 bird and mammal species. These traits include diet breadth, habitat breadth, habitat specialization, body size, sexual dimorphism, and range-based geographic traits including range size, average annual mean temperature and precipitation, and metrics of human impact calculated over the range. Ten-year interval tree-remeasure of a Northern Hardwood Forest: Bird Area, 1981 - ongoing, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
These data depict change in the northern hardwood forest at mid-elevation (360-680 m a.s.l.) over 40 years from 1981 – 2021. The data set includes 7443 trees over time. During this period, there was no trend in basal area or biomass, but there was a decrease in tree density and diversity and an increase in quadratic mean diameter. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Forest Inventory of a Northern Hardwood Forest: Bird Area at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1981
The forest inventory surveys in the bird area were initiated in 1981 and transects were made permanent in 1991. The inventory is representative of approximately 2.5 km-squared of mid elevation northern hardwood forest. It consists of a total inventory of all trees >=10 cm dbh, within each of four 10 m wide belt transects. The parallel transects are placed approximately 200 m apart and run roughly in an east-west direction for 2200 to 2900 m. In 1991, each live stem >=10 cm dbh was tagged with a unique number. Tree vigor is assessed every two years and diameter is remeasured every ten years. Every two years, new tags are placed on stems that have grown into the 10 cm diameter class. A survey of smaller trees (>=2 to <10 cm dbh) was first taken in 1991 and is resurveyed every ten years. This dataset includes the initial inventory values measured in 1981. Forest Inventory of a Northern Hardwood Forest: Bird Area, 1991 - present, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest
The forest inventory surveys in the bird area were initiated in 1981 and transects were made permanent in 1991 by Tom Siccama who created and designed this tree survey. The inventory is representative of approximately 2.5 km2 of mid elevation northern hardwood forest. The data set is particularly geared toward producing accurate mortality and recruitment estimates. It consists of a total inventory of all trees greater than or equal to 10 cm dbh within each of four 10 m wide belt transects. The parallel transects are placed approximately 200 m apart and 290° bearing in an east-west direction for 2200 to 2900 m. In 1991, each live stem greater than or equal to 10 cm dbh was tagged with a unique number. Tree vigor is assessed every two years and diameter is remeasured every ten years. Every two years, new tags are placed on stems that have grown into the 10 cm diameter class. This dataset includes 1991 and subsequent samplings. These detailed tree status data provide a high resolution assessment of tree vital rates, particularly recruitment and mortality rates. The data show an increase in both mortality and recruitment over the 30 year measure time (1991-2021). The number of unhealthy trees has also increased to about 8% of the live trees. The measure period includes notable disturbances, particularly the 2013 microburst impacted the west end of lines 5 and 9, and a saddled prominent outbreak concurrent with drought conditions in 2020. Bird abundance-mist nets in the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot and Nora Devoe Cut Plots in the Luquillos Experimental Forest
This project seeks to measure long-term trends and variability in bird populations in tabonuco forest at El Verde. Repeated measures of bird populations using mist nets are conducted annually in the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot. For each bird caught, I obtain physical measurements (weight, length of wing, length of tail), and estimates of fat, age, and breeding condition. Captured birds are marked to estimate mortality and longevity. Data on canopy openness are also collected annually at each mist net as part of this project. Bird counts in the Central Forest Biosphere Reserve at 2021
<p>Учеты проводились авторами c 20 мая по 02 июля 2021 г. на территории Центрально-Лесного биосферного заповедника и в его охранной зоне. Учитывали на разовых маршрутах с фиксацией всех птиц и дальностей обнаружения. В каждом местообитании проходили за 2 недели по 3-7 км. учета (круг). Расчет обилия птиц проведен раздельно по дальностям обнаружения (Равкин, Ливанов, 2008). Данные по кругам осреднены. Всего пройдено с учетом 154 км полного учета и 20 частичного. Часть учетов (70 км) сопровождались картографированием мест размещения птиц, фиксацией учетных маршрутов и времени встреч с использованием технологии мобильных геоинформационных систем. Unfortunately, the functional trait information required to evaluate functional diversity is often lacking and is difficult to harmonize across disparate data sources. Biodiversity hotspots are particularly lacking in this information. To address this knowledge gap, we compiled Frugivoria, a trait database containing dietary, life-history, and morphological traits as well as IUCN conservation status, for mammals and birds exhibiting frugivory, which are important for seed dispersal, an essential ecosystem service. Accompanying Frugivoria is an open workflow that harmonizes trait and taxonomic data from disparate sources and enables users to analyze traits in space. This version of Frugivoria encompasses species in moist montane forests of Central and South America. Compared with existing trait databases, Frugivoria adds 25 species (reclassifying 199 to align with the most recent taxonomic changes), adds new traits such as observed and inferred range size, habitat specialization, and body size, and also fills gaps in trait categories from other databases such as diet category, home range size, generation time, and longevity. Overall, Frugivoria adds 2,045 new trait values for mammals and 4,022 for birds, and includes a total of 17,454 trait entries with minimums and maximums reported for certain traits. Frugivoria and its workflow enables researchers to quantify relationships between traits and the environment, as well as spatial trends in functional diversity, contributing to basic knowledge and applied conservation of frugivores
