CSM02 Seasonal summary of numbers of small mammals on the four LTER gallery forest and limestone ledges traplines in wooded habitats at Konza Prairie

Data set contains seasonal summaries (spring, summer and autumn) of the number of individuals of each species of small mammal captured (relative abundance) on each woodland trapline. Each record contains year, season, trapline and number of individuals captured of each species. These live trap records are based on daily captures during a single 4-day trapping period in spring (early March to early April), summer (early July to late July) and autumn (mid-October to early December) for each of four permanent traplines established in two habitats (two traplines in gallery forest and two on limestone ledges). Bison did not graze any of the treatment units during the period of study.

PGL01 Litterfall collection in riparian gallery forest at Konza Prairie

Litterfall is collected monthly (more frequently during peak litterfall in October and November) at permanent sampling sites in the mixed deciduous gallery forest located along the lower reaches of Kings Creek at the Konza Prairie Biological Station. Thirty litterfall traps, 50 x 50 cm (.25 m2) are located along the north fork of Kings Creek, and two are located on the south fork of Kings Creek. The north fork boxes are numbered 31 to 60 and the south fork boxes are numbered 1 and 2. Originally, the south fork also had boxes 3 to 30 but these samplers were terminated in 1993 due to repeated damage by bison. (Boxes 1 and 2 are located just outside the bison area.) Samples are sorted in the lab, and mass of wood, seeds, and foliage are recorded separately.

PWV02 Importance values of gallery forest vegetation at Konza Prairie, 1983

Eighteen gallery forest stands, representing nearly all of the nondisturbed forests on Konza Prairie, were sampled during the 1983 growing season. The point-quarter method at 20 sample points was used to sample overstory vegetation. Species names and diameter were recorded for the four sampled trees in each plot. From these data frequency, density and dominance were calculated to derive importance values for each species in a stand.

Plant size and leaf traits for epiphyte species found in flooded gallery forests and non-flooded gallery forests in Central Brazil

<p>Despite their unique adaptations to thrive in canopy environments without access to soil resources, epiphytes are underrepresented in studies of functional traits and of functional composition of tropical plant communities. We investigated functional traits of spermatophytic (seed-bearing) C<sub>3</sub> and CAM epihyte communities in flooded and non-flooded gallery forests in Central Brazil. The two forest types differ in floristic, structure, microclimate and edaphic conditions. We studied plant size, leaf thickness, leaf dry matter content, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf C, N, P, K, Mg, Ca and C and N stable isotope ratios. Because photosynthetic pathway (C<sub>3</sub> or CAM) is an important aspect of ecologial differentiation of spermatophytic epiphytes, we expected that functional trait syndromes in a multivariate space would be more associated with photosynthetic pathway than forest type and changes in abundance of C<sub>3</sub> and CAM epiphytes would drive functional trait composition at the community level. C<sub>3</sub> and CAM epiphytes segregated in the multivariate trait space, however more complex functional typologies were also evident. Despite lower light levels, CAM epiphytes were more abundant in the flooded gallery forest. There, they accounted for 80% of all individuals, whereas C<sub>3</sub> epiphytes dominated in the non-flooded forest. These large differences in the proportion of C<sub>3</sub> and CAM epiphytes strongly affected functional trait values at the community level, despite very little intraspecfic variation in trait values between forest types for species that occurred in both forests.  </p>

Gallery and spiny forest tree species inventory in Berenty Reserve, Madagascar

<p>Madagascar's unique dry forests, particularly gallery and spiny forests, face severe threats and are significantly understudied, leaving only a fraction of the original extent intact. Thus, there is a critical need for characterizing, conserving, and restoring this diverse forest ecosystem. Conducting extensive floristic surveys and environmental analyses, we investigated structural and compositional differences between the gallery and spiny forests, as well as within distinct gallery forest sites in Berenty Reserve in the south of the island. We also evaluated differences in habitat quality between the spiny and gallery forests for three species of diurnal lemurs in the reserve, and analyzed the current population trend of the tamarind trees, a species of ecological and cultural importance in Madagascar. Our findings revealed that the spiny and gallery forests differed in composition and structure, confirming the unique ecological characteristics of gallery forests and the underexplored richness of spiny forests. Spiny forests exhibited higher species richness despite a comparatively lower sampling effort, emphasizing the need for focused conservation efforts in these overlooked ecosystems. Tamarind populations, vital for lemur nutrition, showed signs of inadequate regeneration suggesting a recruitment bottleneck, possibly due to factors like a lowering water table, brown lemur foraging habits, or shifts in environmental conditions. Urgent interventions, including enrichment plantations, were recommended to ensure the survival of this keystone species. Contrasting botanical and lemur-centric perspectives revealed that while spiny and gallery forests differed botanically, they offered comparable habitat quality for ring-tailed and sifaka lemurs. However, brown lemurs exhibit a preference for the gallery forest, highlighting the intricate relationship between plant composition and lemur habitat choices. Our study underscores the urgency of expanding our knowledge of Madagascar´s dry forests, and Berenty Reserve, as one of the few remaining protected areas with gallery and dry forests, serves as a reference for future research in Madagascar's understudied ecosystems. </p>
