Pre-fertilisation gamete thermal environment influences reproductive success, unmasking opposing sex-specific responses in Atlantic Salmon

<p>The environment gametes perform in just before fertilisation is increasingly recognised to affect offspring fitness, yet the contributions of male and female gametes and their adaptive significance remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated gametic thermal plasticity and its effects on hatching success and embryo performance in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Eggs and sperm were incubated overnight at 2°C or 8°C, temperatures within the optimal thermal range of this species. Crosses between warm- and cold-incubated gametes were compared using a fully-factorial design, with half of each clutch reared in cold temperatures and the other in warm temperatures. This allowed disentangling single-sex interaction effects when pre-fertilisation temperature of gametes mismatched embryonic conditions. Pre-fertilisation temperature influenced the age at hatch, and matching sperm and embryo temperatures resulted in earlier hatching. Warm incubation benefited eggs but harmed sperm, reducing the hatching success and, overall, gametic thermal plasticity did not enhance offspring fitness, indicating vulnerability to thermal changes. We highlight the sensitivity of male gametes to higher temperatures, and that gamete acclimation may not effectively buffer against deleterious effects of thermal fluctuations. From an applied angle, we propose the differential storage of male and female gametes as a tool to enhance sustainability within the hatcheries.</p>

An ulvophycean marine green alga produces large parthenogenetic isogametes as predicted by the gamete dynamics model for the evolution of anisogamy

<p>In eukaryotes, the gamete size difference between the two sexes (anisogamy) evolved from gametes of equal size in both mating types (isogamy) and is plausibly claimed to generate sexual selection in morphology and behaviour. The gamete dynamics (GD) model for anisogamy evolution combines gamete limitation and competition and predicts that, if gametes of both mating types can develop parthenogenetically (i.e. without fusing with the opposite mating type), large isogamy can evolve under gamete-limited conditions. Ulvophycean marine green algae that exhibit various gametic systems from isogamy to anisogamy are important models for testing such theories. However, in most previous papers, whether a species is isogamous or anisogamous has not been examined statistically, which leaves the above theoretical prediction untested. We reveal (i) that the gametic system of <em>Struvea okamurae</em> is large isogamy using a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM), which accounted for the variation of gamete size among individual gametophytes, and (ii) that gametes of this alga can actually develop parthenogenetically, contrary to a previous report. Habitat environments and gametic behaviour suggest that this alga might experience gamete-limited conditions. <em>S. okamurae</em> seems to produce large parthenogenetic isogametes following GD model predictions, as an adaptation to deep waters.</p>

Morphometric, gametic and parasitological data of clam Ameghynomia antiqua and DNAmt sequences of parasite

<p><span>The clam </span><em><span>Ameghynomia antiqua</span></em><span> is a highly important resource for fisheries due to its high catches volume. It is the bivalve mollusk with the highest fisheries landings from natural beds on the Pacific coast of southern South America; however, studies of the reproductive conditions of this species are scarce and date back many years. The object of the present work was to evaluate the reproductive characteristics of the species, analysing its gametogenic and gonadal cycle, and reproductive indices, in fishery locations that present the natural beds with the highest fisheries catches, as well as parasite loads in the species. The gonads of the individuals were sampled monthly over a year and classified into one of three states called: "in development", "ripe" and "spawned". Synchrony between the sexes was observed in the indicators of the Gonadosomatic Index and Condition Index in each of the locations, although no synchrony was observed between locations. In the gametogenic cycle, the "ripe" state was observed in females in spring-summer, followed by rapid recovery to new development of the gonads; in males the "ripe" state was observed throughout the year. It was observed that males entered the "spawned" state one month ahead of females. The presence of digenean parasites in the state of metacercariae was detected in the gonads and mantle. No significant differences were found in the prevalence or intensity of infection when analysed by sex and month. The metacercariae were identified, by sequencing of three DNA regions, as belonging to the clade shared by species of the genus <em>Parvatrema</em> and close to the <em>Gymnophalloides</em>; both these genera belong to the family Gymnophallidae of the superclass Digenea. Infection was observed to reduce the gonadal tissue, in some cases causing castration. This is the first record of the presence of these parasites of <em>A. antiqua</em>, with genetic identification at genus level. These results are relevant for act proper management of this resource, which is important for fishing.</span></p>

Impacts of flowering density on pollen dispersal and gametic diversity are scale dependent

<p>Pollen dispersal is a key evolutionary and ecological process, but the degree to which variation in the density of concurrently flowering conspecific plants (i.e., co-flowering density) shapes pollination patterns remains understudied. We monitored co-flowering density and corresponding pollination patterns of the insect-pollinated palm <em>Oenocarpus bataua</em> in northwestern Ecuador and found that the influence of co-flowering density on these patterns was scale-dependent: high neighborhood densities were associated with reductions in pollen dispersal distance and gametic diversity of progeny arrays, whereas we observed the opposite pattern at the landscape scale. In addition, neighborhood co-flowering density also impacted forward pollen dispersal kernel parameters, suggesting that low neighborhood densities encourage pollen movement and may promote gene flow and genetic diversity. Our work reveals how co-flowering density at different spatial scales influences pollen movement, which in turn informs our broader understanding of the mechanisms underlying patterns of genetic diversity and gene flow within populations of plants.</p>

Meiosis at three loci in autotetraploids: Probabilities of gamete modes and genotypes without and with preferential cross-over formation

<div class="abstract">A long-standing goal in the field of polyploid biology has been the derivation of mathematical models of gamete mode formation. These models form the basis of statistical inference and evolutionary theory. Here, we present 3-locus models of gamete mode formation in autotetraploids without and with preferential cross-over formation. The three loci are assumed to occur on one arm of the same chromosome. For preferential cross-over formation, one of the three loci affects the tendency for sets of sister chromatids to pair and therefore affects rates of recombination. The models are derived such that the process of double reduction is a function of rates of synaptic partner switches and recombination, as opposed to being independent of these processes. We assume potentially one synaptic partner switch per meiosis. We also assume the coefficient of coincidence is one, such that cross-over events are independent, given a set of cross-over rates. Illustrative cases are examined demonstrating differences in the gamete mode probabilities without and with preferential cross-over formation. Lastly, we explore the accuracy of maximum likelihood estimates of the probability of synaptic partner switches and preferential cross-over formation when the locus controlling preferences is at a proximal, middle or distal location on the chromosome arm. Fasting increases investment in soma upon refeeding at the cost of gamete quality in zebrafish

<p>Fasting increases lifespan in invertebrates, improves biomarkers of health in vertebrates, and is increasingly proposed as a promising route to improve human health. Nevertheless, little is known about how fasted animals use resources upon refeeding, and how such decisions affect putative trade-offs between somatic growth and repair, reproduction, and gamete quality. Such fasting-induced trade-offs are based on strong theoretical foundations and have been recently discovered in invertebrates, but the data on vertebrates is lacking. Here we report that fasted female zebrafish, <em>Danio</em> <em>rerio</em>, increase investment in soma upon refeeding, but it comes at a cost of egg quality. Specifically, an increase in fin re-growth was accompanied by a reduction in 24-hours post-fertilization offspring survival. Refed males showed a reduction in sperm velocity and impaired 24-hour post-fertilisation offspring survival. These findings underscore the necessity of considering the impact on eggs and sperm when assessing evolutionary and biomedical implications of lifespan-extending treatments in females and males and call for careful evaluation of the effects of fasting (both during and post) on fertilisation.</p>

Female reproductive fluid and male seminal fluid: A non-gametic conflict for post-mating control

<p>Growing evidence shows that non-gametic components released by both males and females can significantly drive sperm competition outcomes. Seminal fluid (SF) was shown to influence paternity success by affecting rival males' sperm performance, and, in some species with male alternative reproductive tactics, to selectively decrease the fertilization success of males of the opposite tactic. Female reproductive fluid (FRF) has been proven to differentially influence ejaculates of different males and bias fertilization towards specific partners. Whether, and with what outcome, these two processes can intersect to influence sperm competition is still unknown. Here we explore this scenario in the grass goby (<em>Zosterisessor ophiocephalus</em>), a fish with territorial-sneaker reproductive tactics, where sneaker males can exploit the territorials' SF while penalizing territorial sperm performance with their own fluid. To test whether FRF can rebalance the ejaculate competition in favour of territorial males, we used in vitro fertilization with a SF mixture (territorial + sneaker), using increasing concentrations of FRF, to simulate the natural conditions that ejaculates encounter towards the eggs. Our findings revealed a differential effect of FRF on the different tactics' fertilization success, favouring territorial ejaculates, possibly through an attenuation of the detrimental effects of sneaker SF, and enabling females to regain control over the fertilization process.</p>
