Detailed insight into gillnet catches: fish directivity and micro distribution

<p>This dataset contains data for gillnets that were deployed in Ř&iacute;mov reservoir, South Bohemia, Czech Republic (48&deg;50'55.0"N 14&deg;29'14.0"E). The sampling dates were recorded from July 30 to August 2, 2019. This experiment was conducted to test the bias of gillnets in relation to fish direction capture. To determine if this is a random pattern or if it follows a directional pattern. California Department of Fish and Wildlife Enhanced Large Fish Study, San Francisco Estuary, California, 2023 Gillnet Survey

The Enhanced Large Fish Study (ELFS) was established and included in the Interagency Ecological Program (IEP) work plan in 2023 to fill some of the monitoring gap of fishes in the San Francisco Estuary (SFE), California. The fish monitoring of the IEP prior to ELFS primarily consisted of trawl- and seine-based surveys, which generally capture small and/or juvenile fishes due to survey gear and methodologies. In order to more effectively sample the large/adult fish portion of SFE fish communities, the ELFS uses American Fisheries Society experimental gillnets, plus the inclusion of the optional "large fish panel," to sample the waters of the SFE. The experimental gillnets measure 24.4m in length, 1.8m in depth, and includes eight 3m length panels with stretch mesh measurements of 76.2mm, 114.3mm, 50.8mm, 88.9mm, 38.1mm, 127.0mm, 63.5mm, and 101.6mm. The optional large fish panel measures 9.1m by 1.8m in depth and includes three 3m length panels with stretch mesh measurements of 152.4, 177.8, and 203.2mm. The ELFS conducted its first year of sampling in the North Delta, California, in 2023, and will be expanded to the greater Delta and Suisun Bay and Marsh in future sampling years. The ELFS is currently funded as a special study to inform future monitoring, with funding contracted through fiscal year 2026-2027.

Lake Hövsgöl Mongolia Gillnet Survey Data

Lake Hövsgöl Mongolia Gillnet Survey Data from 2006 to 2022Mongolia is home to several endangered salmonids, including taimen (Hucho taimen) and Hovsgol grayling (Thymallus nigrescens). Taimen are the world’s largest trout, reaching a record size of 210 cm (83 in) and 105 kg (231 lb), though individuals larger than 30 kg are rare. Hovsgol grayling are an endemic species of grayling found only in Lake Hovsgol. Two factors have made Mongolia a de facto refuge for many fish species: (1) there is little tradition of fish-eating, and (2) there is low human population density and low land-use intensity (little agriculture or urban development). Both of these are changing. Commercial harvest of fish increased during the years of Soviet occupation. Today there are several poorly regulated commercial fisheries in lakes and rivers as well as widespread poaching. Mining and increased grazing intensity threaten water quality. Our research in Mongolia is focused on the ecology and conservation of taimen and Hovsgol grayling as well as the aquatic ecosystems on which they depend. Video S2 - Gillnetting Invasive Lake Trout

<p><strong>Video S2.</strong> Gillnetting suppression of invasive lake trout in Yellowstone Lake. Apex predatory lake trout, discovered in 1994, invaded Yellowstone Lake and caused a precipitous decrease in abundance of native cutthroat trout. Lake trout are a deep-water dwelling, cold-adapted (&lt; 10&deg;C) predatory species that do not serve as an ecological substitute for cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake. Gillnetting suppression efforts were initiated in 1995 and were increased to an effort level achieved in 2012 that led to a reduction in lake trout biomass. Contracted and U.S. National Park Service crews using specialized boats and equipment process &gt; 2,500 km of gillnets annually. Several hundred thousand lake trout carcasses are deposited to deep (&gt; 65 m) regions of the lake. Research is ongoing to document potential affects of carcass deposition on the ecology of Yellowstone Lake.</p>

Gillnets and stomach content metabarcoding - sharks and rays

<p>Gillnets are the world's most common net-based fishing gear, comprising walls of light mesh designed to entangle fish. Gillnets are often retrieved with holes in the netting, which means some animals escape or are depredated unseen, but with some mortality. To effectively manage fisheries around the world, information is required on not only the harvested and discarded mortalities, but also problematic interactions and mortalities caused by the fishing gear and especially those involving protected species. This study sought to assess a novel method for determining such interactions by sampling five adjacent pieces of netting around each of ten holes in two bather protection polyethylene gillnets for environmental DNA or 'eDNA'. Here we show that eDNA correctly identified all previously entangled-and-landed species. Also, eDNA from three uncaptured taxa were recorded: bull shark, <i>Carcharhinus leucas</i>, white shark, <i>Carcharodon carcharias</i> and dolphins (Delphindae), illustrating the potential to reveal previously cryptic gillnet interactions. We propose that as scientific methods evolve and autonomous real-time DNA surveillance becomes routine, eDNA testing of fishing gears and vessels could provide a novel, complementary fishery-monitoring tool.</p>
