The homogenized glacier inventories for South Tirol 1997-2005-2017
<p>Data set of three homogenized glacier inventories for the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol for the reference years 1997, 2005 and 2017 in ESRI-shapefile format. The shapefiles are supplemented by a MS-excel file containing analyses of glacier changes between the single inventories and a detailed technical report describing the inventories and the underlying data and methods.<br> The inventories were compiled based on orthophoto and airborne laser-scanning data using a homogenized methodology to enable for direct comparisons between the single inventories. Besides the vectorized glacier outlines and several identifiers (glacier names and WGMS/CGI codes), the inventories provide information on typical topographic parameters such as glacier area, min max and median altitude, main aspect, slope and geographic location.</p>
Glacier inventory of the upper Huasco valley, Norte Chico, Chile
<p>Shapefile of the glacier inventory of the Upper Huasco catchment, Chile, that was generated for the following research article:</p> <p>Nicholson, L. I., Marín, J., Lopez, D., Rabatel, A., Bown, F. and Rivera, A.: Glacier inventory of the upper Huasco valley, Norte Chico, Chile: glacier characteristics, glacier change and comparison with central Chile, Ann. Glaciol., 50(53), 111–118, doi:10.3189/172756410790595787, 2010.</p> <p>Glaciers were mapped on the basis of ASTER imagery from 2004, and classifed for the study as clean ice glaciers (1), debris covered glaciers (2) and rock glaciers (3). Additionally, classification following the GLIMS gudeilines (https://www.glims.org/.../GLIMS_Glacier-Classification-Manual_V1_2005-02-10.pdf ) was applied where possible to glacier features on the basis of additional ASTER imagery from 2002 and 2003, and older air photographs.</p>
A new inventory of High Mountain Asia surging glaciers derived from multiple elevation datasets since the 1970s
<p>Glacier surging is an unusual undulation instability of ice flow and complete surging glacier inventories are important for regional mass balance studies and assessing glacier-related hazards. Glacier surge events in High Mountain Asia (HMA) are widely reported. Through the estimated elevation changes from multiple DEMs sources that acquired from 1970s to 2020, and morphologic changes from 1986 to 2021, here we present a new surging glacier inventory across HMA. The inventory has incorporated 890 surging and 336 surge-like glaciers, each glacier is assigned with indicators of surging feature and surge possibility. Compared to previous surging glacier inventory in HMA, our inventory is theoretically more complete because of the much longer observation period. This data repository contains the surging glacier inventory and glacier elevation change maps. The inventory is stored in the format of GeoPackage (.gpkg) and ESRI Shapefile format (.shp), which is represented by glacier polygon (from GAMDAM2) or surface point with geometric attributes. The multi-temporal elevation change maps of identified surging glaciers were divided into 1×1° tiles, storing in the format of GeoTiff(*.tif). Detailed description of the dataset including the file contents and attributes information can be found in the metadata file (README.txt).</p>
Glacier Inventories in the Chhombo Chhu Watershed of Tista basin, Sikkim Himalaya, India
<p>Multi-temporal inventory of glaciers compiled for the Chhombo Chhu Watershed (CCW) of Tista basin, Sikkim Himalaya, India. The CCW consists of 74 glaciers (>0.02 km2) with a mean glacier size of 0.61 km2. Change analysis based on the glaciers outlines obtained from declassified hexagon KH-9 (1975), Landsat 5 TM (1989), Landsat 7 ETM+ (2000), Landsat 5 TM (2010) and Sentinel 2A (2018). The total glacier area in 1975 was 62.6 ±0.7 km2; by 2018 the glacier area had decreased to 44.8 ± 1.5 km2, an area loss of 17.9 ± 1.7 km2 (0.42 ± 0.04 km2 a–1). Debris free glaciers exhibit more area loss by 11.8 ± 1.2 km2 (0.27 ± 0.03 km2 a–1) followed by partially debris-covered (5.0 ± 0.4 km2 or 0.12 ± 0.01 km2 a–1) and maximum debris-covered (1.0 ± 0.1 km2 or –0.02 ± 0.002 km2 a–1) glaciers. The quantum of glacier area loss in the CCW of Sikkim Himalaya took its pace during 2000–2010 (0.62 ± 0.5 km2 a–1) and 2010–2018 (0.77 ± 0.6 km2 a–1) timeframes. Field investigations of selected glaciers and climatic records also support the trend in glacier recession in the CCW, as a result of significant increase in temperature trend and more or less static precipitation since 1995. Glacier retreat rates in the CCW were almost similar to the Changme Khangpu basin and other selected glaciers in Sikkim Himalaya. Thus, this glacier inventory and area change analysis will provide valuable information to the glaciological and hydrological community for the future modeling and planning of the water resources in Sikkim state of Eastern Himalaya.</p>

The First Rock Glacier inventory for the Greater Caucasus
<p>In this study we produce the first inventory of rock glaciers from the entire Greater Caucasus region—Russia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. A remote sensing survey was conducted using Geo-Information System (GIS) and Google Earth Pro software based on high-resolution satellite imagery—SPOT, Worldview, QuickBird, and IKONOS, based on data obtained during the period 2004–2021. Sentinel-2 imagery from the year 2020 was also used as a supplementary source. The ASTER GDEM (2011) was used to determine location, elevation, and slope for all rock glaciers. </p> <p>This inventory provides a database for understanding the extent of permafrost in the Greater Caucasus and is an important basis for further research of geomorphology and palaeoglaciology in this region.</p>
First rock glacier inventory of the Peruvian Andes: distribution, classification and climatic characterization
<p>The contours of the Rock glaciers (RGs) were manually digitized, identifying a total of 2271 (967 active, 507 inactive, 311 intact and 486 relict) covering 109.1±1.5 km2 and distributed in 15 of the 20 cordilleras of Peru. The Minimum Altitude Front (MAF) of RGs is 4339 m a.s.l., while most of them are between 4800 to 5000 m a.s.l. For the Southwest zone (Z-IV) where 94% of the RGs are located, the Binary Logistic Regression Model (BLRM) shows that MAAT and slope are the variables that have the greatest influence on the presence of 76.5% RGs evaluated. While in the North (Z-I), Central (Z-II) and Southeastern (Z-III) zones, the topoclimatic variables analyzed did not show statistical significance. This first inventory represents an important input for modeling the spatial distribution of permafrost in the Peruvian Tropical Andes.</p>
Rock glacier inventory from multi-temporal InSAR measurement and optical image interpretation in southern Daxue Shan
<p>Based on the Sentinel-1A ascending SAR images acquired between June 2019 and June 2022, we derived a five-year-long annual average velocity map in southern Daxue Shan. Kinematic characteristics from InSAR measurement and geomorphic characteristics from optical image interpretation are then considered comprehensively for rock glaciers inventorying. A total of 860 rock glaciers are compiled and their geomorphic and kinematic parameters are calculated.</p>
World Glacier Inventory, Version 1
Notice: Due to funding limitations, this data set was recently changed to a “Basic” Level of Service. Learn more about what this means for users and how you can share your story here: <a href="https://nsidc.org/data/user-resources/data-announcements/user-notice-level-service-update-data-products">Level of Service Update for Data Products</a>.<br><br>The World Glacier Inventory (WGI) contains information for over 130,000 glaciers, or about 85% of the total estimated number of glaciers. Inventory parameters include geographic location, area, length, orientation, elevation, and classification. The WGI is based primarily on aerial photographs and maps with most glaciers having one data entry only. Hence, the dataset can be viewed as a snapshot of the glacier distribution in the second half of the 20th century. It is based on the original WGI (WGMS 1989) from the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS).
Inventory of Rock Glaciers along the Ghunsa Valley, Kanchanjunga Himal, Eastern Nepal, Version 1
This dataset provides information on a number of Nepali rock glaciers distributed above 4250 m ASL along the Ghunsa valley and the Kanchanjunga glacier (originating from the summit of Mt. Kanchanjunga, 8586 m ASL). The rock glaciers were identified on the basis of air photo analysis and were visited in October and November 1999. The longitude, latitude, and elevation of each rock glacier are given. Geographic coordinates were determined using a 1:50,000 topographic map of Nepal. Two categories of rock glaciers are described: glacier-derived and talus-derived rock glaciers. The internal structure of two rock glaciers (KR4 and KR23) were investigated by DC resistivity imaging.
Randolph Glacier Inventory - A Dataset of Global Glacier Outlines, Version 2
The Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI) is a global set of glacier outlines; it is intended as a snapshot of the world’s glaciers. This data set provides a single outline for each glacier and is produced in coordination with the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) initiative. The RGI is not suitable for measuring glacier-by-glacier rates of area change, but can be used to estimate glacier volumes, rates of elevation change at regional and global scales, and cryospheric responses to climatic forcing.Glacier mapping data are contributed to both GLIMS and the RGI from the glaciological community. RGI is produced by the Working Group on the Randolph Glacier Inventory and Infrastructure for Glacier Monitoring, a body of the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS). This data set is updated approximately annually.Glacier outlines are distributed as Shapefiles. Hypsometric data (CSV files) and gridded auxiliary data (GeoTIFFs) are also available. All RGI data are packaged globally and by region, with regions based upon the Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers.
Glacier Inventory of West Greenland, 1948 - 1985, Version 1
The inventory includes 5,297 Glaciers from west Greenland between 59 to 71 degrees latitude north and 43 to 53 degrees longitude west. The glacier data basin division is based on a simplified version of the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS) system. Data are based on 1:250000 maps, Landsat imagery, and aerial photos that were taken between 1948 and 1985.
Randolph Glacier Inventory - A Dataset of Global Glacier Outlines, Version 4
Randolph Glacier Inventory - A Dataset of Global Glacier Outlines, Version 7
The Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI) is a global set of glacier outlines intended as a snapshot of the world’s glaciers outside of ice sheets. It provides a single outline for each glacier from approximately the year 2000, as well as a set of attributes and other relevant auxiliary information. Glacier outlines are distributed as Shapefiles. Hypsometric data and attributes (CSV files) and metadata (json) are also available. All RGI data are packaged both globally and by region (as defined by the Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers (GTN-G) Glacier Regions). The RGI is not suitable for measuring glacier-by-glacier rates of area change. However, it can be used to estimate glacier volumes; rates of elevation change at regional and global scales; and glacier responses to climatic forcing.RGI version 7.0 was developed by the “Working Group on the Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI) and its role in future glacier monitoring” of the International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS). The glaciological community contributes glacier mapping data to the Global Land Ice Measurements from Space (GLIMS) database. A subset of the glacier outlines in GLIMS are then extracted and reprocessed to produce the RGI.See the RGI documentation under "User Guide" (below) for more information.
Rock glacier inventory, Printse Valley, Valais, Switzerland, Version 1
The Printse Valley is a 16-km-long north-orientated basin. The south-part (summits at 300 m asl) is glacierized. The intermediate sector, more continental, is very rich in rock glaciers. We have inventoried 46 rock glaciers. A second sector is the south-orientated basin of Louvie, in which we have inventoried 25 rock glaciers. For each rock glacier a file exists with different characteristics like orientation, width, length, elevation of the spring and the front, type of form, type of material, activity, lithology, etc. Measurements of spring temperatures and BTS (Bottom temperature under snow cover) exist for some rock glaciers, especially in the Tortin zone (see maps). Data collected during 1992 and 1997. These data are presented on the CAPS Version 1.0 CD-ROM, June 1998.
