Long-term mid-marsh grasshopper abundance and species diversity at eight GCE-LTER sampling sites
Grasshopper abundance and species diversity were investigated at eight sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study area during July or August from 2000 to 2023. Visual surveys were conducted along 8-10 2m by 10m transects randomly allocated within the mid-marsh zone at each site. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. These surveys were conducted as part of the GCE invertebrate monitoring program, and are performed annually to assess long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area.

Visual surveys were conducted along eight 2m by 10m transects randomly located within the mid-marsh zone at each site. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. This survey is conducted annually to assess spatial patterns of grasshopper abundance and long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area. In 2024, only 3 sites were sampled due to time and weather constraints.
CGR01 Sweep sampling of Grasshoppers on Konza Prairie LTER watersheds in 1981 only
Sweep samples for estimating grasshopper (Acrididae) composition and relative abundance at one site for each of 12 Konza Prairie LTER fire/grazing/soil treatment combinations (3 fire treatments x 2 soils x 2 grazing treatments). Samples were collected in June, August, and September. At each site on each occasion, 18 sets of 10 sweeps each (180 sweeps total) were taken. Stored data include for each site on each occasion: total number of each species (all instars combined) collected and total number for each instar for each species (180 sweeps combined).
CGR02 Sweep sampling of Grasshoppers on Konza Prairie LTER watersheds
Sweep samples were taken for grasshoppers (Acrididae) at two sites for each of 14 Konza Prairie LTER watersheds. Samples are taken in late July to early August. At each site on each occasion, 10 sets of 20 sweeps (200 sweeps total) are taken. Stored data include for each site on each occasion: total number of each species (all instars combined) collected and total number for each instar for each species (200 sweeps combined).

Grasshopper abundance and feeding damage were investigated at the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) study area approximately monthly in 2016. We conducted visual surveys in each replicate plot and counted 3 species of grasshopper (Romalea, Leptysma, Orchelimum) and scored grasshopper feeding damage on 2 species of plants (Zizaniopsis, Pontederia).

Grasshopper survey and substrate utilization data at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1983 to 1985
This dataset contains grasshopper occurrence observations sampled from 9 plots on the east bajada of the Dona Ana Mountains at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 1983 to 1985. Three plots were situated on the bajada parallel to and 200 m south of the LTER-I transect. Two additional sets of three plots were located 5 km and 10 km south of the LTER transect. Each plot is composed of two 50 meter belt transects, each divided into ten 5-square-meter quadrats. Grasshoppers were visually sampled in each quadrat/plot, once in May, July and September, in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Each individual grasshopper, its age, sex and the substrate it was observed on, are recorded as observations in the dataset. This study is complete.
Herbaceous vegetation size and cover data in grasshopper survey quadrats at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1984 to 1985
This dataset contains annual herbaceous plant data collected in association with grasshopper surveys during 1984 and 1985 as part of the Jornada Basin LTER program. Annual herbaceous plant data was collected from Jornada grasshopper plots on the east bajada of the Dona Ana Mts. Three plots were situated on the bajada parallel to and 200 m south of the LTER-I transect. Two additional sets of three plots were located 5 km and 10 km south of the LTER transect. Each plot is composed of two 50 m belt transects, each divided into ten 5-meter-squared quadrats. Annual plants were measured in the northeast 1 square meter of each quadrat. All individuals of each species were counted and measured. A mean diameter, height, and the total number of individuals per 1-square-meter quadrat were recorded. Measurements were taken in May, July, and September of 1984, and in May and September of 1985. This dataset consists of the date of collection, plot number, transect number, quadrat number, plant species code, mean plant diameter, and mean plant height. This dataset is complete.
Long-Term Core Site Grasshopper Dynamics for the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico
Grasshoppers are important animals in semi-arid environments, both as herbivores and as food resources for higher level consumer animals. Grasshoppers tend to be numerous and speciose in semi-arid environments, especially desert grasslands, where they range from environmental specialists to environmental generalists. Grasshopper populations tend to change considerably from year to year, often in response to annual variation in rainfall and plant production. The purpose of this study was to monitor grasshopper species composition and abundance over large temporal and spatial dimentions which include black grama grassland, blue grama grassland, creosotebush shrubland, and pinyon/juniper woodland environments at the Sevilleta, in relation to seasonal and annual variation in precipitation and plant production. Data were collected for all individual species to provide information on community dynamics as well as population dynamics, starting in 1992 and continuing to the present. The working research hypothesis for this study was that grasshopper populations in all environments will correlate positively to seasonal and annual variation in precipitation and plant production. Spring grasshopper populations will be especially high during El Nino years, and late summer populations especially high during La Nina years.
Grasshopper species occurrence data in Mt. Kilimanjaro
<p>Species occurence data of grasshopper in 60 plots on the southern slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro.</p> <p>Orthoptera assemblages were recorded on all study sites by repeatedly walking for 1.5 h on parallel tracks (distance between transects ca. 1-1.5 m) and recording all sighted species. In forested study sites, trees and bushes in the understory vegetation were shaken for approximately 1.5 h. Insects falling from the vegetation were gathered on white canvas laid on the forest floor. Species which could not be identified during visits were collected and later identified. Study sites were also visited at night where Ensifera were registered acoustically. Additionally, two rounds of sweep net sampling were conducted on study sites to collect small species which may have remained undetected during transect walks. One round was conducted during the cool dry season (July to October) and one during the warm dry season (December to March). During each sweep netting round, 100 sweeps with a 30-cm diameter sweep were taken and all collected specimens were identified in the laboratory. Species accumulation curves for Caelifera and Ensifera on Mt. Kilimanjaro were published in , showing that more than 90% of the grasshopper, locust and bushcricket fauna for Mt. Kilimanjaro have been registered.</p> <p>The KiLi project (2010-2018) is a German Science Foundation (DFG) funded research unit (DFG research unit FOR1246) that focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem processes along altitudinal and disturbance gradients on Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania, Africa), capitalizing on its world-wide unique range of climatic and vegetation zones. The research unit comprises 2 central projects and 7 subprojects from various disciplines. On a total of 60 study sites in both natural and human-disturbed ecosystems biodiversity (e.g. plants, soil arthropods, ants, bees, frogs, lizards, bats, birds), related ecosystem processes (decomposition, seed dispersal, pollination, herbivory, predation), and biogeochemical processes and properties of ecosystems (climate, soil properties and nutrient status, regulation of water and carbon fluxes, trace gas emissions, primary productivity, functional diversity) are analyzed.</p>

Grasshopper abundance and family diversity were investigated at fifty-five hammock sampling sites and five Georgia Coastal Ecosystems GCE LTER study sites in June-July 2007. Each hammock site had six permanent study plots which were previously laid out. The investigators started at each of these plots and walked to the closest clump of Spartina alterniflora, measuring his or her paces. Grasshopper abundance was conducted along a 10m by 2m transect and identified to family.
