Tree diameter growth and increment core δ13C data from a recently thinned forestry-drained site (Lettosuo) in southern Finland.

Dataset includes increment core data from Lettosuo drained peatland forest site. The study site locates in the Tammela municipality in southern Finland (60° 38’ 31’’ N, 23° 57’ 35’’ E). Increment cores were analysed for the ring widths for dominant and suppressed Norway spruce trees, and for the ring δ13C values from suppressed Norway spruce trees. Data was collected as a part of BiBiFe (”Biogeochemical and biophysical feedbacks from forest harvesting to climate change”) consortium that is funded by the Academy of Finland.

Sampling for increment cores was done during October 2020 for sample trees (10 in total, of which 5 were suppressed trees from thinned area and 5 suppressed trees from control area) and additional sampling was conducted for annual diameter increment for 3 tree groups to increase sample size for diameter growth (suppressed trees in thinned area [n=20], dominant trees in thinned area [n=22] and suppressed trees in control area[n=20]) during March 2021.

Tree ring carbon isotope data

Laser ablation IRMS method was applied in the Stable Isotope Laboratory of Luke (SILL) to quantify δ13C values in 10 increment cores for the time period 2010–2020, following principles of Schulze et al. Up to 11 evenly spaced “spots” for each annual tree ring were measured to obtain information on the intra-annual variation of δ13C of the samples.

(1) File: Lettosuo_d13C.xls

File includes d13C measurements

Data column description below for isotope data:

id stands for tree id [id includes tree identity, year and also spot number]

year is the year of the tree ring

nr is an index for data

tree indicates tree identity "C" for control and "H" for harvest

treatment indicates the treatment of the sampling area (control / harvest)

d13C gives the measured d13C value based on the LA-IRMS measurements

season indicates whether observation originated from the earlywood (EW) or latewood (LW) period, where 1 is EW and 2 is LW

Tree ring width measurements

In addition to the δ13C values, also the ring widths were measured. Otolith annual growth increments for cod populations in the Northeast Atlantic

Large-scale, climate-induced synchrony in the productivity of fish populations is becoming more pronounced in the world's oceans. As synchrony increases, a population's 'portfolio' of responses can be diminished, in turn reducing its resilience to strong perturbation. Here we argue that the costs and benefits of trait synchronization, such as the expression of growth rate are context dependent. Synchrony among individuals could actually be beneficial for populations if growth is optimized during favourable conditions and then declines under poor conditions when a broader portfolio of responses is needed. Importantly, growth synchrony among individuals within populations has seldom been measured, despite well-documented evidence of synchrony across populations. Here, we used century-scale time series of annual otolith growth to test for changes in growth synchronization among individuals within multiple populations of a marine keystone species (Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua). On the basis of 74,662 annual growth increments recorded in 13,749 otoliths, we detected a rising conformity in long-term growth rates within northeast Atlantic cod populations in response to both favorable growth conditions and a large-scale, multidecadal mode of climate variability similar to the East Atlantic Pattern. The within-population synchrony was distinct from the across-population synchrony commonly reported for large-scale environmental drivers. Climate-linked, among-individual growth synchrony was also identified in other Northeast Atlantic pelagic, deep-sea and bivalve species. We hypothesize that growth synchrony buffers marine populations to changing climate and growth conditions through its effect on the phenotypic expression of growth diversity, and thus provides an unexpected, but pervasive and stabilizing impact on marine population productivity.

Tree growth (height and average basal area increment) and herbivory measurements 20 years after the 1994 Hajdukovich Creek burn
This dataset contains height, diameter at breast height, and average basal area increment of aspen and black spruce from historical sites established in the Hajdukovich Creek burn. 12 pre-established sites were used, 6 from both low and high fire severity. Sites were sampled in 2014, 20 years after the fire. Furthermore, for each individual the distance from sampling point (plotless density), levels of past herbivory, health, basal age (number of tree rings visible from basal disk), age of the tree at 3 meters height, and age and height of some collected twig clusters (evidence of past herbivory) is included.
Annual aspen growth (basal area increment; BAI) of 84 aspen that were alive and 76 that were dead when sampled in 2016 from 22 plots (eight sites) that are a part of the Cooperative Alaska Forest Inventory (CAFI)
This dataset contains basal area increment (BAI) chronologies of 84 aspen the were alive and 76 that were dead in 2016. Live trees were cored and dead trees felled in 2016 across 22 plots (eight sites) that are a part of the Cooperative Alaska Forest Inventory (CAFI). Chronologies of BAI extend as far back as 1901 and up to 2015.
