Data from: Controlled release of basic fibroblast growth factor from a peptide biomaterial for bone regeneration

Self-assembled peptide scaffolds based on D-RADA16 (D16) are an important matrix for controlled drug release and 3D cell culture. In this work, D16 peptide hydrogels were coated on artificial bone composed of nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66 (NHA/PA66) to obtain a porous drug-releasing structure for treating bone defects. The developed materials were characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The proliferation and adhesion of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were examined by Confocal laser microscopy (CLS) and CCK-8 experiments. The osteogenic ability of the porous materials towards bone BMSCs was examined in vitro by staining with Alizarin Red S and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bioactivity were evaluated in vivo. The results revealed that NHA/PA66/D-RADA16/bFGF reduce the degradation rate of D16 hydrogels and prolong sustained release of bFGF, which would promote BMSCs proliferation, adhesion and osteogenesis in vitro and bone repair in vivo. Thus, it deserves more attention and is worthy of further research.

Data from: Insect herbivory on native and exotic aquatic plants: phosphorus and nitrogen drive insect growth and nutrient release

Eutrophication and globalisation facilitate the dominance of exotic plants in aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Aquatic omnivores can provide biotic resistance to plant invasions, but little is known about whether obligate aquatic herbivores can do the same. Herbivores such as insects can decimate aquatic vegetation, but may not be able to consume exotic plants due to their more or less specialised nature of feeding. We experimentally tested the larval feeding of an aquatic insect, the moth Parapoynx stratiotata, on eleven submerged plant species, from either native or exotic origin. We also tested whether insect herbivory stimulates nutrient and organic matter release, thus affecting water quality. Larvae of P. stratiotata consumed seven out of eleven plant species, and their growth was related to plant nutrient content and stoichiometry. However, larvae had no preference for either native or exotic macrophytes, and their plant preference was not related to the measured plant traits, but was possibly driven by secondary metabolites. Through plant consumption, caterpillars induced brownification and phosphate release, and the intensity thereof varied among plant species, but not between native and exotic plants. In conclusion, P. stratiotata showed strong feeding preferences demonstrating that aquatic insects can directly and indirectly alter water quality and vegetation composition.

Data from: Downregulation of circATXN7 represses non-small cell lung cancer growth by releasing miR-7-5p

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) participate in the occurrence and progression of many cancers. CircRNA ataxin 7 (circATXN7) (circBase ID: hsa_circ_0066436) plays a promoting influence on gastric cancer progression. However, the biological role of circATXN7 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is indistinct. CircATXN7 and PFN2 were highly expressed in NSCLC, whereas miR-7-5p expression had the opposite trend. CircATXN7 overexpression constrained apoptosis and promoted proliferation, metastasis, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of NSCLC cells, but circATXN7 silencing played the opposing influence and repressed xenograft tumor growth in vivo. CircATXN7 served as a miR-7-5p sponge, and circATXN7 regulated malignant behaviors of NSCLC cells through sponging miR-7-5p. PFN2 acted as a miR-7-5p target. PFN2 silencing overturned the promoting effect of miR-7-5p inhibitor on NSCLC cell malignancy, while PFN2 overexpression reversed the inhibitory impact of miR-7-5p mimic on NSCLC cell malignancy. CircATXN7 accelerated the malignancy of NSCLC cells through adsorbing miR-7-5p and upregulating PFN2, offering evidence to support circATXN7 as a might target for NSCLC treatment.
