One Health EJP 4th Dissemination Workshop: Communication, education and training, and science to policy translation. Lessons learnt and legacy of the One Health EJP

<p>The Dissemination Workshops inform on One Health EJP solutions created in response to stakeholder needs, fostering the link between stakeholders and the consortium. Previous Dissemination Workshops targeted policy and decision makers at the national, European, and international level (reports available <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/outcomes/science-to-policy-translation/reports">here</a>). This workshop instead is dedicated to all those who would like to set up One Health initiatives, encouraging them to learn from the experience of the One Health EJP.</p> <p>The 4th virtual One Health EJP Dissemination Workshop focuses on the interaction with stakeholders to translate science into policy, the impact of the education and training activities, and strategies used for effective dissemination of One Health solutions. Online presentations are given by the members of the One Health EJP <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/outcomes/science-to-policy-translation/reports">Science to Policy Translation</a> (WP5), <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/community/education-and-training">Education and Training</a> (WP6), and Communications Teams.</p> <p>Through this workshop, One Health EJP consortium members provide examples of successful strategies and lessons learnt, with the objective of inspiring all those working in this field or setting up new One Health initiatives and increasing the impact of One Health activities in Europe. Epigenetic Profiling of Social Communication Trajectories and Co-occurring Mental Health Problems: A Prospective, Methylome-wide Association Study

<p>While previous studies suggest that both genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the development of autism-related traits, little is known about potential biological mechanisms underlying these associations. Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), we examined prospective associations between DNA methylation (DNAm: N-birth=804, N-age7=877) and trajectories of social communication deficits (8-17 years). Methylomic variation at three loci across the genome (false discovery rate=0.048) differentiated children following high (n=80) versus low (n=724) trajectories of social communication deficits. This differential DNAm was specific to the neonatal period and not observed at age 7. Associations between DNAm and trajectory membership remained robust after controlling for co-occurring mental health problems (i.e., hyperactivity/inattention, conduct problems). The three loci identified at birth were not replicated in the Generation R Study. However, to the best of our knowledge, ALSPAC is the only study to date that is prospective enough to examine DNAm in relation to longitudinal trajectories of social communication deficits from late childhood to late adolescence. Although the present findings might point to potentially novel sites that differentiate between a high versus low trajectory of social communication deficits, the results should be considered tentative until further replicated.</p> <p>This dataset&nbsp;contains summary statistics for the methylome-wide association study using DNAm data collected from individuals at birth.</p> <p>Upload of this dataset was completed by The EWAS Catalog team. Novel Science communication – how to build public health knowledge across the social gradient. The Healthy Choices Project (WP5).

<p>Everyday life consists of hundreds of choices of which many may have an impact on our health. The&nbsp;citizens&nbsp;of the modern Nordic welfare states are in general well-educated and&nbsp;thus&nbsp;can be assumed to know what is best for them. Despite this our health care systems face an increasing burden of lifestyle related diseases and there is a difference across the social gradient. Here building public health knowledge through communication is key. The reason for people making unhealthy choices are many and can be that; they do not know what is good for them (lack information) or do not understand (lack understanding) or do not care (carelessness).&nbsp;However it seems likely that it is more complex than that. Maybe they do not receive the information, because gets conveyed through channels that they&nbsp;do not consult or maybe the format of the message does not &lsquo;click&rsquo;? Could it be, that &lsquo;one media message or channel does not fit all&rsquo;?&nbsp;</p> <p>Over the last decades there has been an increased focus from both scientists themselves and politicians to scientific and practical field of &lsquo;science communication&rsquo;. Consequently, various advanced modes of communicating e.g. health issues to the general populations have been developed, and today scholars of Mass Media term this development the &lsquo;scientification&rsquo; of media. Furthermore, media and information availability has exploded since the emergence of the Internet in the early 1990s. Research has indicated that social gradient also is a factor affecting&nbsp;a person&rsquo;s&nbsp;media consumption and habit.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>In the healthy choices project we aim through novel methods to learn more about these challenges and at the develop new methods of conveying public health knowledge to enable people to make healthier choices across the social gradient. We have so far built a framework for this including a science group, consisting of public health experts, and a communication group consisting of experienced science communicators. The Science group is consulted about risk factors and health endpoints and what to prioritize. Two PhD students will be involved in; 1) assessing media consumption and usage related to health issues across social classes (Low social gradient versus high social gradient)&nbsp;and across the generational gap (young and elderly) and 2) develop and test various media message formats for&nbsp;target groups including considerations of the social gradient. This project will provide new understanding on how to communicate public health messages and reduce social inequalities in health.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Rewarding Fitness Tracking – The Communication and Promotion of Health Insurers' Bonus Programs and the Use of Self-Tracking Data

<p>The data set offers additional information for the study on &quot;Rewarding Fitness Tracking &ndash; The Communication and Promotion of Health Insurers&rsquo; Bonus Programs and the Usage of Self-Monitored Data&quot;, to be submitted at HCII 2018.</p> <p>The data set includes the full lists of German and Australian Health Insurers investigated, including a link to their apps.</p> <p>This study aims at giving an overview on the current status quo of health insurances that investigate self-tracking opportunities and possible rewards for customers that share their fitness and health activities. We are interested in how insurers promote their health and well-being programs (intended program goals) and motivate customers to live healthier (incentives). We introduce research in progress while firstly focusing on the countries Germany and Australia. We discuss the current situation of health insurance clients&rsquo; data use, data security issues as well as long-term health benefits regarding those programs based on recent research on self-tracking activities. Data from: Identifying patterns of non-communicable diseases in developed eastern coastal China: a longitudinal study of electronic health records from 12 public hospitals

Objective: Few studies have examined the spectrum and trends of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in inpatients in eastern coastal China, which is transforming from an industrial economy to a service-oriented economy and is the most economically developed region in the country. This study aimed to dynamically elucidate the spectrum and characteristics of severe NCDs in eastern coastal China by analysing patients' longitudinal electronic health records (EHRs). Setting: To monitor the spectrum of NCDs dynamically, we extracted the EHR data from 12 general tertiary hospitals in eastern coastal China from 2003 to 2014. The rankings of and trends in the proportions of different NCDs presented by inpatients in different gender and age groups were calculated and analysed. Participants: We obtained a total sample of 1,907,484 inpatients with NCDs from 2003 to 2014, 50.05% of whom were male and 81.53% were aged 50 years or older. Results: There was an increase in the number of total NCD inpatients in eastern coastal China from 2003 to 2014. However, the proportion of chronic respiratory diseases and cancer inpatients decreased over the 12-year period. Compared with men, women displayed a significant increase in the proportion of mental and behavioural disorders (P&lt;0.001) over time. Additionally, digestive diseases and sensory organ diseases significantly decreased among men, but not women. The older group accounted for a larger and growing proportion of the NCD inpatients, and the most common conditions in this group were cerebral infarctions, coronary heart disease and hypertension. In addition, the proportion of 21- to 50-year-old inpatients with diabetes, blood diseases or endocrine diseases skyrocketed from 2003 to 2014 (P&lt;0.001). Conclusions: The burden of inpatients' NCDs increased rapidly, particularly among women and younger people. The NCD spectrum observed in eastern coastal China is a good source of evidence for developing prevention guides for regions experiencing transition.

Supporting data for: Risk factors common to leading eye health conditions and major non-communicable diseases: A rapid review and commentary

<p><strong><span>Background</span></strong><span>: </span><span>To gain an understanding of the intersection of risk factors between the most prevalent eye health conditions that are associated with vision impairment and non-communicable diseases (NCDs).</span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong>:</span><span> A</span><span> series of rapid reviews of reviews reporting on non-modifiable risk factors, age and sex, and modifiable risk factors, including social determinants, were conducted for five common eye health conditions that are the leading causes of vision impairment globally (refractive error including uncorrected refractive error, cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy) and five prevalent NCDs (cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, dementia, and depressive disorders). </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>: </span><span>Eye health conditions and NCDs share many risk factors. Increased age was found to be the most common shared risk factor, associated with increased risks of AMD, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, refractive error, cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia. Other shared risk factors included smoking, obesity, alcohol consumption (mixed results), and physical activity was protective, though limited evidence was found for eye conditions. Social determinants are well documented as risk factors for NCDs.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong>:</span><span> There is substantial overlap in common established risk factors for the most frequent vision-impairing eye conditions and leading NCDs. Increasing efforts should be made to integrate preventative and risk reduction interventions to improve health, with the greatest shared benefits for initiatives that aim to reduce smoking, improve diet, and promote physical activity.</span></p>
