MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Farmerfish gardens help buffer stony corals against marine heat waves, data for Honeycutt et al., PLOS One 2023

These data were generated in support of the manuscript: Honeycutt RC, Holbrook SJ, Brooks, AJ, and RJ Schmitt, PLOS One In Moorea, French Polynesia, we evaluated the response and fate of stony coral following a major thermal stress event in 2019 that caused a substantial amount of branching coral (dominantly Pocillopora) to bleach and die. We investigated whether Pocillopora colonies that occurred within territorial gardens protected by the farmerfish Stegastes nigricans were less susceptible to or survived bleaching better than Pocillopora on adjacent, undefended substrate. Bleaching prevalence and severity, which were quantified for >1,100 colonies shortly after they bleached, did not differ between colonies within or outside of defended gardens. By contrast, 399 focal colonies followed for one year revealed that a bleached coral within a garden was a third less likely to suffer complete colony death and, for survivors, about twice as likely to recover to its pre-bleaching cover of living tissue compared to Pocillopora outside of a farmerfish garden. Our findings indicate that while residing in a farmerfish garden may not reduce the bleaching susceptibility of a coral during thermal stress, it does help buffer a bleached coral against severe outcomes. This oasis effect of farmerfish gardens, where survival and recovery of thermally-damaged corals are enhanced, is another mechanism that helps explain why large Pocillopora colonies are far more abundant in farmerfish territories than elsewhere in the lagoons of Moorea, despite gardens being much less common. As such, farmerfish may have a growing role in maintaining the resilience of branching corals as the frequency and intensity of marine heat waves continue to increase. <p><strong>Data to reproduce the figures in Bischof et al. 2023: &quot;The role of the North Atlantic for heat wave characteristics in Europe, an ECHAM6 study&quot; submitted to GRL in July 2023. </strong></p> <p>Modelling experiments are based on the FOCI model using ECHAM6 in an AMIP-like setup to carry out time slice experiments using 2018 background conditions in the atmosphere and on land (both following the SSP5-8.5 scenario) as well as in the ocean (daily forcing data based on ERA5). A sensitivity experiment without the cold SST anomaly in the subpolar North Atlantic that was observed in 2018 is also carried out.</p> <p><strong>COLD-SH009</strong> refers to the 2018 experiment using 2018 SSTs as observed, <strong>NEUTRAL-RP006</strong> refers to the experiment with altered SSTs in the North Atlantic region only. Heat wave and cold snap event library under various technical choices for NERC subregions in the conterminous U.S. (1980 - 2024)

<p>This <strong>Extreme Thermal Event Library</strong> provides comprehensive records of heat wave and cold snap events from 1980 to 2024, aggregated at the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) subregion level for the conterminous United States. A map of NERC subregions with county-level mean temperatures is included in the file <strong>'NERC_subregions_with_mean_temperature.tif'</strong>.</p> <p>The heat wave and cold snap events were identified using temperature data simulated by the Thermodynamic Global Warming (TGW) model. The raw TGW hourly temperature data (at a 12-km resolution) was aggregated to the county level using spatial averaging within county boundaries. Daily mean, maximum, and minimum temperatures were then derived from the hourly surface air temperature data for each county. Subsequently, the county-level daily temperatures were spatially aggregated to the NERC subregion level using three distinct spatial aggregation methods:</p> <ol> <li><strong>Simple Mean (SM)</strong>: A simple average of county-level temperatures.</li> <li><strong>Area-Weighted Mean (MWA)</strong>: Weighted by the area of each county.</li> <li><strong>Population-Weighted Mean (MWP)</strong>: Weighted by the population of each county.</li> </ol> <p>The database includes separate zipped files for each spatial aggregation method:</p> <ul> <li><strong>"heat_wave_library_NERC_average.zip"</strong> and <strong>"cold_snap_library_NERC_average.zip"</strong> contain events based on the SM method.</li> <li><strong>"heat_wave_library_NERC_average_area.zip"</strong> and <strong>"cold_snap_library_NERC_average_area.zip"</strong> contain events based on the MWA method.</li> <li><strong>"heat_wave_library_NERC_average_pop.zip"</strong> and <strong>"cold_snap_library_NERC_average_pop.zip"</strong> contain events based on the MWP method.</li> </ul> <p>Each zipped file includes 12 event libraries, corresponding to 12 different event definitions. Details about these definitions are provided in the file <strong>'Event definitions.docx'</strong>.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3><strong>Event Library Structure</strong></h3> <p>Each row in an event library represents one detected thermal event. Data from: Upper atmosphere heating from ocean-generated acoustic wave energy

Colliding sea surface waves generate the ocean microbarom, an acoustic signal that may transmit significant energy to the upper atmosphere. Previous estimates of acoustic energy flux from the ocean microbarom and mountain/wind interactions are on the order of 0.01 to 1 mW/m2, heating the thermosphere by tens of degrees Kelvin per day. We captured up going ocean microbarom waves with a balloon borne infrasound microphone; the maximum acoustic energy flux was approximately 0.05 mW/m2. This is about half the average value reported in previous ground-based microbarom observations spanning eight years. The acoustic flux from the microbarom episode described here may have heated the thermosphere by several degrees Kelvin per day while the source persisted. We suggest that ocean wave models could be used to parameterize acoustically-generated heating of the upper atmosphere based on sea state.

Data from: Contrasting heat tolerance of evergreen and deciduous urban woody species during heat waves

<p>The increasing frequency and intensity of heat waves caused significant damages to urban woody species, and the different leaf structures between evergreen and deciduous species may be closely related to leaf heat tolerance. However, whether the different leaf structural traits of evergreen and deciduous plants contribute to their different responses under heat waves is still unclear.</p> <p>During the record-breaking and long-lasting 2022 summer heat waves in China, we investigated the relationships between leaf thermal indices and leaf structural traits of 36 urban woody species in four cities along the Yangtze River.</p> <p>We found that all the four thermal indices were significantly but weakly related with leaf damage status. The critical temperature that causes the initial 15% damage to photosystem II (Tcrit) may serve as a sensitive measure of heat tolerance. Evergreen species suffered less leaf damage during the heat waves and exhibited higher leaf heat tolerance, thicker leaves than deciduous species. Tcrit was significantly correlated with leaf mass per area, leaf thickness and thickness of spongy tissue.</p> <p><em>Synthesis</em>:<em> </em>Urban woody species with high Tcrit, leaf mass per area, and leaf thickness tend to be more tolerant to heat stress. This study provides insights for predicting leaf heat tolerance of urban woody plants in subtropical China and their physiological and ecological responses to severe heat waves.</p>

Sublethal reproductive costs associated with experimental heat waves in the copepod, Tigriopus californicus

<p>Physiological stress may induce sublethal effects on fitness by limiting energy availability and shifting energy allocation, which can incur reproductive costs. Sublethal reproductive costs may affect vital rates, linking stress events such as heat waves to population demography. Here, we test the hypothesis that heat wave intensity and consecutive days of exposure to heat wave temperatures impact survival and individual reproductive success. We subjected groups of the marine harpacticoid copepod, <i>Tigriopus californicus,</i> to six heat wave regimes that differed in maximum exposure temperature, 26°C or 32°C, and number of consecutive exposure days (1, 2, or 7), and predicted that survival and reproductive costs would increase with heat wave intensity and duration. We measured individual survival and offspring production during the heat waves and for two weeks following the last day of each experimental heat wave. Despite similar survivorship between the two maximum temperature treatments, sublethal effects of heat wave intensity were observed. Consistent with our predictions, individuals that experienced the higher maximum temperature 32°C heat waves produced fewer offspring overall than those that experienced the 26°C heat wave. Furthermore, the number of naupliar larvae (nauplii) per clutch was lower in the 32°C group for egg clutches produced immediately after the final day of exposure. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that increasing thermal stress can lead to sublethal costs, even with no discernible effects on mortality. Heat waves may not always have lethal effects on individuals, especially for individuals that are adapted to routine exposures to high temperatures, such as those occupying the high intertidal. Costs, however, associated with stress and/or reduced performance due to non-linearities, can affect short-term demographic rates. The effect of these short-term sublethal perturbations is needed to fully understand the potential for population rescue and evolution in the face of rapid climate change.</p>

Short-term heat waves have long-term consequences for parents and offspring in stickleback

<p>Extreme temperature events, such as heat waves, can have lasting effects on the behavior, physiology, and reproductive success of organisms. Here we examine the impact of short-term exposure to a simulated heat wave on condition, parental care, and reproductive success in a population of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a small fish with exclusive paternal care, currently experiencing regular heat waves. Males were either exposed to a simulated heat wave (23°C) for five days or held at an ideal temperature (18°C). All males had offspring that were raised at 18°C. We found that while mass and body condition were unaffected in males exposed to a heat wave, cortisol responses were dampened across the nesting cycle compared to control males. In addition, heat wave males had longer latency for eggs to hatch, lower hatching success, and were unable to parent at the same level as control males. Offspring of heat wave males had lower body condition, affecting swimming performance. Altogether, our results highlight the long-term impact that even short-term events can have on reproductive success, parental behavior, and subsequent generations, providing insight into population responses to rapid environmental change.</p>

Data from: The heat is on: reduced detection of floral scents after heat waves in bumblebees

<p>Global climate change disrupts key ecological processes and biotic interactions. The recent increase in heat wave frequency and severity prompts the evaluation of physiological processes that ensure the maintenance of vital ecosystem services such as pollination. We use experimental heat waves to determine how high temperatures affect the bumblebees' ability to detect floral scents. Heat waves induced strong reductions in antennal responses to floral scents in both tested bumblebee species (<em>Bombus terrestris and Bombus pascuorum</em>). These reductions were generally stronger in workers than in males. Bumblebees showed no consistent pattern of recovery 24 hours after heat events. Our results suggest that the projected increased frequency and severity of heat waves may jeopardize bumblebee-mediated pollination services by disrupting the chemical communication between plants and pollinators. The reduced chemosensitivity can decrease the bumblebees' abilities to locate food sources and lead to declines in colonies and populations.</p>
