Indicative distribution map for Ecosystem Functional Group T3.3 Cool temperate heathlands
<p>This archive contains indicative distribution maps and profiles for <strong>T3.3 Cool temperate heathlands</strong>, a ecosystem functional group (EFG, level 3) of the <a href="https://global-ecosystems.org/">IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology</a> (v2.0). Please refer to Keith <em>et al.</em> (2020) for details.</p> <p>The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes, maps are indicative of global distribution patterns, and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Given bounds of resolution and accuracy of source data, the maps should be used to query which EFG are likely to occur within areas, rather than which occur at particular point locations. Detailed methods and references for the maps are included in the profile (xml format).</p>

Data from: Restoring heathlands after afforestation on two islands in western Norway
<p><span>The ongoing loss of red-listed coastal heathlands is a threat to biodiversity and cultural heritage legacies throughout the Atlantic coastal regions of Europe. It is possible to restore degraded and afforested heathlands, but restoration interventions are often labour-intensive and costly, and the outcome of specific restoration actions is not well documented. We assess the efficiency of restoring coastal heathlands through natural succession (i.e. "passive restoration") after removal of Sitka spruce (<em>Picea</em> <em>sitchensis</em> (Bong.) Carr.) plantations. The study was replicated on two neighbouring islands in a nature reserve in Western Norway. Low-intensity free-range sheep grazing was implemented as part of the reserve management plan. Furthermore, we tested the effect of leaving the clear-felled woody material as chips on site, this being a cost-efficient strategy on islands. Succession was monitored 1, 2, 4/5 and 8 years after clear-felling, and revegetation of vascular plants and bryophytes was compared to target heathland vegetation. Surprisingly, we found different successional trajectories on the two islands. Species composition on one island approached target heathland vegetation during succession, but not on the other. Wood chips reduced species richness and slowed the restoration process, but these negative effects were only short-term (< 8 years). Differences in seed bank composition and soil conditions due to land use may explain the deviating successional trajectories on the two islands. We also found that management actions beyond clear-felling and introducing sheep grazing are necessary due to the rapid seed regeneration of the Sitka spruce.</span></p>
Data from: Rapid post-fire re-assembly of species-rich bryophyte communities in Afroalpine heathlands
<p>Questions: In some fire-prone ecosystems, bryophytes play a crucial role by providing the surface fuel that controls the fire-return interval. Afroalpine heathlands are such an ecosystem, yet almost nothing is known about the bryophytes in this system. We do not know the level of species richness, or if there is a successive accumulation of species over time, or if some species are adapted to specific phases along the successional gradient, for example early-successional species sensitive to competition.</p> <p>Location: Afroalpine heathlands in Ethiopia</p> <p>Methods: We made an inventory of all bryophytes in 48 plots of 5 x 5 m, distributed along a chronosequence from 1 to 25 years post-fire. The heathlands are located around 3500-3800 m asl, and are managed by traditional pasture burning with fire intervals of around 8-20 years.</p> <p>Results: We found in total 111 taxa of bryophytes. Post-fire mortality was almost 100%. The youngest plots had only a few cosmopolitan species often found after fire. Species richness increased monotonically and seemed to start levelling off at around 15 years after fire, when many plots had around 30 species and a high cover of Breutelia diffracta, which is a key ground-living species, important as surface fuel. Most species were found with sporophytes, a pattern even stronger for the most frequent species.</p> <p><span>Conclusions:</span> Interestingly, bryophyte diversity is already remarkably high by only 15 years after total eradication. The relatively slow accumulation of species in the first years suggest that dispersal in space, and not time, is the major mechanism by which sites regain their diversity (i.e. spore banks play a small role). This indicates that the high species richness is built up through colonization from surrounding heathlands, and perhaps also from higher altitude alpine grasslands and lower altitude forests, and that the bryophyte diversity in this system is maintained by the traditional fire and grazing management.</p>

Interaction networks are widely used as tools to understand plant–pollinator communities, and to examine potential threats to plant diversity and food security if the ecosystem service provided by pollinating animals declines. However, most networks to date are based on recording visits to flowers, rather than recording clearly defined effective pollination events. Here we provide the first networks that explicitly incorporate measures of pollinator effectiveness (PE) from pollen deposition on stigmas per visit, and pollinator importance (PI) as the product of PE and visit frequency. These more informative networks, here produced for a low diversity heathland habitat, reveal that plant–pollinator interactions are more specialized than shown in most previous studies. At the studied site, the specialization index Embedded Image was lower for the visitation network than the PE network, which was in turn lower than Embedded Image for the PI network. Our study shows that collecting PE data is feasible for community-level studies in low diversity communities and that including information about PE can change the structure of interaction networks. This could have important consequences for our understanding of threats to pollination systems.
Data from: Prescribed burning protects endangered tropical heathlands of the Arnhem Plateau, northern Australia
1. There are concerns that frequent intense fires are reducing biodiversity on the Arnhem Plateau within Kakadu National Park, northern Australia. Since the 1980s, prescribed burning in the early dry season has aimed to reduce the extent of late dry season wildfires. A programme of more strategic prescribed burning has been undertaken since 2007, aiming to increase intervals between fires affecting heathland and rain forest communities. 2. We assess the effectiveness of prescribed burning in Kakadu's Stone Country using a Landsat satellite-derived fire history (1980–2011), in terms of achieving 'tolerable fire intervals' for dominant plant communities. 3. Our analysis indicates that fire regimes have become substantially more favourable for biodiversity since the early 1980s. Although annual extent of burning has remained unchanged, two significant changes in fire regimes have occurred over the long term: (i) a switch from late dry season dominance to early dry season dominance and (ii) an increase in the abundance of long-unburnt vegetation, both of which are likely to benefit biodiversity. Demonstrating the statistical significance of changes associated with recent, more strategic fire management (2007–2011) is limited by the short duration of this management approach, although there is evidence of increasing abundance of long-unburnt vegetation during this time. 4. The view that the Arnhem Plateau's fire regimes are increasingly driving biodiversity loss (due to frequent late dry season wildfires) is erroneous; they are in a more benign state now than at any time over the last three decades, most likely due to extensive use of prescribed burning. 5. Synthesis and applications. In highly fire-prone landscapes, such as savannas, prescribed burning can be an effective means of: (i) bringing forward peak fire activity to the time of year when fire conditions are relatively mild and (ii) increasing abundance of long-unburnt vegetation. These changes are likely to favour persistence of a range of fire-sensitive communities. Our case study supports the strategic use of prescribed burning to protect fire-sensitive biota within highly fire-prone landscapes throughout the world.

Cytisus scoparius is a global invasive species that affects local flora and fauna at the intercontinental level. Its natural distribution spans across Europe, but seeds have also been moved among countries, mixing plants of native and non-native genetic origins. Hybridization between the introduced and native gene pool is likely to threaten both the native gene pool and the local flora. In this study, we address the potential threat of invasive C. scoparius to local gene pools in vulnerable heathlands. We used nuclear single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers together with plastid SSR and indel markers to investigate the level and direction of gene flow between invasive and native heathland C. scoparius. Analyses of population structures confirmed the presence of two gene pools: one native and the other invasive. The nuclear genome of the native types was highly introgressed with the invasive genome, and we observed advanced-generation hybrids, suggesting that hybridization has been occurring for several generations. There is asymmetrical gene flow from the invasive to the native gene pool, which can be attributed to higher fecundity in the invasive individuals, measured by the number of flowers and seed pods. Strong spatial genetic structure in plastid markers and weaker structure in nuclear markers suggest that seeds spread over relatively short distances and that gene flow over longer distances is mainly facilitated by pollen dispersal. We further show that the growth habits of heathland plants become more vigorous with increased introgression from the invaders. Implications of the findings are discussed in relation to future management of invading C. scoparius.

Quantitative assessment of the dispersal of soil-dwelling oribatid mites via rodents in restored heathlands
<p><span>1. </span><span>Heathland restoration using topsoil removal requires the re-</span><span>colonisation</span><span> of above- and belowground communities. Oribatid mites play a key role </span><span>in the comminution of organic matter and are frequently early colonizers during succession despite their limited mobility. Whereas the assembly of their communities may take decades, passive dispersal likely dominates </span><span>colonisation</span><span> processes, but especially dispersal via other animals (phoresy) remains poorly studied. Compared to other potential hosts, movement habits and ecology of small rodents may provide dispersal advantages to oribatid communities.</span></p> <p><span>2. </span><span>We studied dispersal of oribatid mites via </span><span>small rodents </span><span>in restored heathland sites of different age</span><span>. </span><span>We measured movement patterns of small rodents and extracted mites from their pelts and nests </span><span>to </span><span>estimate annual contributions of these rodents to the dispersal of oribatids. We also discussed phoretic estimates reported on other host groups as a reference. </span></p> <p><span>3. </span><span>Probability estimates of oribatids in pelts and nests showed lower occurrence frequencies compared to other reported phoretic hosts. However, local rodent communities may aid the dispersal of up to 41,000 oribatid mites per year. We highlight the high diversity of oribatid species mounting rodents, unlike strong species-specific filters reported in other passive pathways. We found that over half (58%) of the oribatid species reproduced asexually and over a third (34%) had a soil-dwelling lifestyle. We also observed that rodents often travel short distances below 40m, but occasionally reach distances of up to 100m, especially in</span><span> earlier successional stages. </span></p> <p><span>4. </span><span>Synthesis and applications. </span><span>Our results suggest that rodents may contribute to assembly processes of soil-dwelling oribatid communities given the slow turnover rate of this group in heathlands. This is accomplished through short-distance dispersal, and especially in sites at early stages of succession. To our knowledge, we are the first to quantitatively assess the potential dispersal of oribatid mites via rodents. </span></p>

Testing the Rapid Assessment Protocol for Spiders and Millipedes in Nantucket Sandplain Grassland and Coastal Heathland
<p>Submitted in fulfillment of a 2009 Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative grant.<br> <br> We tested a Rapid Assessment Protocol for Spiders and Millipedes (RAPSM) in sandplain grassland and coastal heathland on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts. The objective of this protocol is to efficiently capture most of the available species within a defined area and provide species diversity datasets that are comparable between habitats. The RAPSM requires a combination of two person-hours of litter sorting and one person-hour of hand collecting (sweep-netting) in individual 100 m2 circular plots. We collected 538 spiders representing 36 species (188 were identifiable) from seven plots. The average number of spiders collected (adult and juvenile) per plot was 77 and the average number of species per plot was 12. On average, there are 0.77 spiders per square meter of sandplain grassland and coastal heathland within our study area. Litter sorting produced the most complete collection as indicated by accumulation curves. The RAPSM species list contains 71 percent of the species in a season adjusted species list for the study area and they are 58 percent similar. Our data suggest there is high beta diversity in the sandplain grassland and coastal heathland habitat. Millipedes will be sent to the Chicago Field Museum for identification.</p>
