"The sound comes from a meadow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The meadow is at an elevation of 2400 meters near a mountain named Olancha Peak, which is 3700 meters in altitude. Ihave a group of friends with which Ibackpack (trek) into the mountains. Our goal was to spend some time in the mountains and hike to the top of Olancha Peak (…) By the time we reached the meadow, we were in a forest and there was still snow on the ground in some places. We took the trip in June of 2006. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are a large mountain range. Much of the range is protected by national parks or preserved areas we call 'wilderness areas' (…) Ihave been backpacking for nearly 40 years and Iwill hopefully continue with this challenging activity for 40 years more! Many of my friends are much younger than Iam and it gives me much satisfaction to be able to have as much or more stamina for this activity than they have! When we are on these trips, we hike up peaks, catch fish, drink some whiskey around campfires and enjoy our time in the beautiful solitude. My memories of this trip were of the steep, hot hike from the desert to the cool meadow; the overall beauty of the nature, the absolute solitude of our campsite near the meadow; the strenuous hike to the top of Olancha Peak; the camaraderie of my friends; and, of course the sound of the frogs in the meadow. The frog sounds were astounding to me and Iwould listen in awe of the creature's instinctual desire to reproduce and continue the existence of their kind. Surely there were different species in the meadow for some of the frog sounds were different than others. The sounds only occurred after the Sun went down for the evening. Walking with the Vlachs: Hiking trail from the village of Draçova up to the Mount Nemërçka

<p>This is an alternative walk that strays from the main historic routes of the Vlach (<a href="https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/vlachs-transhumance-route-108659966" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/vlachs-transhumance-route-108659966</a> or <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10924809" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10924809</a>). The route is around 4 km long and it provides a daily walking alternative with a lot to explore. From the town of P&euml;rmet, you can choose to walk, cycle or drive for c. 21 km towards the south until reaching the start of the trail at the village of Dra&ccedil;ova. Once there, take the right-hand path that leads along a watercourse lined up with old plane trees and gardens up to its spring. On the slope of the hill to the west are remains of the Bronze Age settlement of Dedejan. A narrow path up past the spring, of about 3 hours walking, takes through a beech and pine forest, leading to the beautiful meadow below the steep rocky cliff of Mount Nem&euml;r&ccedil;ka.</p>

The Syris Dataset of Risk and Difficulty Points in Hiking Routes

<p>The popularity of hiking has steadily increased in the latest years, across different segments of the population.&nbsp;<br> Although there is considerable evidence of the benefits for hikers regarding physical and mental health, the inherent risks of these outdoor activities cannot be underestimated. Accident prevention and an increase of awareness about possible risks are necessary to minimize hiking and pedestrian tourism&#39;s negative consequences.&nbsp;<br> In most hiking information maps and interactive applications, there is usually not enough information about difficulty points or the granularity level required to provide tailored recommendations to hikers with physical or psychological limitations.<br> This open dataset documents the information acquired in&nbsp;the Syris project, a geo-information system for hiking itineraries that incorporates Points-Of-Difficulty to assess the level of effort, technique, and risk of hiking trails. This dataset is a pioneering effort to offer comprehensive information about detailed difficulty and effort levels in hiking paths at Val d&#39;Anniviers in Switzerland, with the long term goal of expanding the database to the rest of the country.</p>

Data from: Does hunting or hiking affect wildlife communities in protected areas?

Managed public wild areas have dual mandates to protect biodiversity and provide recreational opportunities for people. These goals could be at odds if recreation, ranging from hiking to legal hunting, disrupts wildlife enough to alter their space use or community structure. We evaluated the effect of managed hunting and recreation on 12 terrestrial wildlife species by employing a large citizen science camera trapping survey at 1947 sites stratified across different levels of human activities in 32 protected forests in the eastern USA. Habitat covariates, especially the amount of large continuous forest and local housing density, were more important than recreation for affecting the distribution of most species. The four most hunted species (white-tailed deer, raccoons, eastern grey and fox squirrels) were commonly detected throughout the region, but relatively less so at hunted sites. Recreation was most important for affecting the distribution of coyotes, which used hunted areas more compared with unhunted control areas, and did not avoid areas used by hikers. Most species did not avoid human-made trails, and many predators positively selected them. Bears and bobcats were more likely to avoid people in hunted areas than unhunted preserves, suggesting that they perceive the risk of humans differently depending on local hunting regulations. However, this effect was not found for the most heavily hunted species, suggesting that human hunters are not broadly creating 'fear' effects to the wildlife community as would be expected for apex predators. Synthesis and applications. Although we found that hiking and managed hunting have measureable effects on the distribution of some species, these were relatively minor in comparison with the importance of habitat covariates associated with land use and habitat fragmentation. These patterns of wildlife distribution suggest that the present practices for regulating recreation in the region are sustainable and in balance with the goal of protecting wildlife populations and may be facilitated by decades of animal habituation to humans. The citizen science monitoring approach we developed could offer a long-term monitoring protocol for protected areas, which would help managers to detect where and when the balance between recreation and wildlife has tipped.
