Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Relations of the O-horizon with canopy tree species and hydropedologic soil types, 2021

As the interface between plants and soil, the organic horizon is the foundation of forest ecosystems. Two potential predictors of O-layer properties, vegetation and mineral soil type, are difficult to separate because they typically covary. We conducted a factorial study involving four canopy tree species and two soil types with distinctly different hydrology and topographic position to parse patterns in chemistry and microbiota of the O-layer in a north-temperate deciduous forest. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

OpenAIRE and FAIR Data Expert Group survey about Horizon 2020 template for Data Management Plans

<p>This dataset is published in 2017 by the OpenAIRE project and the FAIR Data Expert Group.</p> <p>It contains two survey data files, two pdf-files summarising the results in a report and an infographic, and a Readme.txt file.</p> <p>The OpenAIRE project supports the open science ambitions of the European Commission. The project and in particular the Research Data Management team provide support, training and information on the Open Research Data Pilot. In this context, a survey was carried out to collect feedback on the Horizon 2020 template for Data Management Plans (DMPs). The team collaborated with the FAIR data expert group, which is providing recommendations to the European Commission on turning FAIR data into reality. One of the specific tasks of the Expert Group is contributing to an evaluation of the Horizon 2020 approach to DMPs, including future revisions of the template and the development of additional sector/ discipline-specific guidance. The aim of the survey was to collect experiences of researchers and DMP reviewers with the DMP template and guidelines on FAIR data management in Horizon 2020. The survey assesses the usefulness of the guidelines and any aspects that are confusing and unclear to determine what improvements can be made.</p> <p>Feedback was sought from both researchers and research support staff. The survey was initially scheduled to run from 22 May to 21 June 2017. Several organisations were asked to help announce the survey, including OpenAIRE&rsquo;s National Open Access Desks, the FAIR data expert group, FOSTER, LIBER, and the RDA Interest Group on Active DMPs. When the first survey responses showed only a small share of researchers,&nbsp; more stakeholders were contacted to specifically target this community. The European Research Area was approached, whose project officers circulated the survey call among award holders of EC projects. Early-career researchers were also informed through the YEAR network and EURODOC. This resulted in an extension of the survey to 21 July 2017.</p> <p>At the close of the survey on 21 July 2017, a total number of 289 responses were reached. 50% of the respondents indicated that they were researchers, and 60% that they were (also) research support staff. OpenAIRE and the FAIR data expert group are very pleased with this balanced outcome and would like to thank all colleagues and organisations who promoted the survey, as well as everyone who took part in it.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Sediment Elevation Change (Feldspar Marker Horizon Method) from Northeastern Florida Bay (FCE) from 1996 to Present

The long term goal of the South Florida Water Management District's research program focuses on the following central objective: Regional processes mediated by water flow control population and ecosystem level dynamics at any location within the coastal Everglades landscape. This phenomenon is best exemplified in the dynamics of an estuarine oligohaline zone where fresh water draining phosphorus-limited Everglades marshes mixes with water from the more nitrogen-limited coastal ocean. Data in this data package are specifically to monitor soil elevation change relative to current sea level.

Disturbance and recovery of salt marsh arthropod communities in Louisiana and Mississippi following the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Oil spills represent a major environmental threat to coastal wetlands, which provide a variety of critical ecosystem services to humanity. The U.S. Gulf of Mexico is a hub of oil and gas exploration and production with recognized consequences on intertidal habitats, such as the salt marsh. Following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, we sampled the marine invertebrate and the terrestrial arthropod community found in stands of Spartina alterniflora, the most abundant plant in coastal salt marshes, in 2010 as oil was washing ashore and a year later in 2011. In 2010, intertidal crabs and terrestrial arthropods (insects and spiders) were suppressed by oil exposure even in seemingly unaffected stands of plants; however, Littoraria snails appeared unaffected. One year later, crab and arthropods appeared to have largely recovered. Our work is the first attempt that we know of assessing vulnerability of the salt marsh arthropod community to oil exposure, and it suggests that arthropods are both quite vulnerable to oil exposure, and quite resilient, able to recover from exposure within a year if host plants remain healthy. BP's Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf Coast presented an opportunity to understand how stress from an oil spill might affect variables that we were measuring in the area. The study was conducted at sites in Louisiana and Mississippi. At each site, a 100m transect was sampled within 5m of the dead zone boundary. Sampling was conducted in August 2010 and August 2011. The number of sites and location of sites differed slightly among years.

Joint AstraZeneca-Cancer Research Horizons Functional Genomics Centre's CRISPRn library benchmark screens: gRNA counts and associated metadata

<p>Genome-wide CRISPR sgRNA libraries have emerged as transformative tools to systematically probe gene function. While these libraries have been iterated over time to be more efficient, their large size limits their use in some applications. Here, we benchmarked publicly available genome-wide single-targeting sgRNA libraries and evaluated dual targeting as a strategy for pooled CRISPR loss-of-function screens. We leveraged this data to design two minimal genome-wide human CRISPR-Cas9 libraries that are 50% smaller than other libraries and that preserve specificity and sensitivity, thus enabling broader deployment at scale.&nbsp;</p>
