Arts and humanities in the LTER Network: understanding extent, values, and challenges by assessing the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network, 2013-2014
The Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) Network is a collection of 25 National Science Foundation-funded sites committed to long-term, place-based investigation of the natural world. While activities primarily focus on ecological research, arts and humanities inquiry emerged in 2002 and since then a substantial body of creative work has been produced at LTER-affiliated sites. These art-humanities-science collaborations parallel a wider trend in universities and nonprofits. However, there is little empirical work on the value and effectiveness of this work. After launching a survey in 2013 to assess the values and challenges associated with arts and humanities in the LTER Network, which identified empathy as a meaningful potential outcome of this creative work, we conducted a follow-up analysis to understand: the relevance of empathy in the LTER Network; the role of empathy in bridging arts, humanities, and science collaborations; and the capacity of empathy to connect wider audiences both to LTER science and to the natural world. Our research included phone interviews with representatives from 15 LTER sites and an audience perception survey at an LTER-hosted art show. We found that arts-humanities-science collaborations have great potential to catalyze relationships between scholars, the public, and the natural world; cultivate inspiration and empathy for the natural world; and spark awareness shifts that can enable pro-environmental behavior. Our research demonstrates the potential for art-humanities-science collaborations to facilitate conservation attitudes and action in the Network and beyond.
Hourly values of an advanced human-biometeorological index for diverse populations from 1991 to 2020
<p>The presented human thermal bioclimate dataset was created in the frame of the <a href="https://theheatalarm.wordpress.com/">HEAT-ALARM</a> ("Development of a heat-health warning system in Greece") research project.</p> <p><strong>Initially developed for Greece</strong>, it consists of hourly values of population-weighted mPET (modified physiologically equivalent temperature), simulated by the RayMan Pro model for the period 1991-2020 and for 10 population subsets in 72 regional units and combinations thereof, which are based on the NUTS-3 (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics-3) classification in Greece, using the Copernicus European Regional Reanalysis (CERRA) at 5.5 km spatial resolution. The dataset also includes the main environmental drivers of mPET (e.g. temperature) at the same spatiotemporal resolution.</p> <p>In the framework of <strong>replicating</strong> the original dataset, the current version includes population-weighted values of mPET and its environmental drivers for six populations in five districts of <strong>Cyprus</strong> at the LAU-1 (Local Administrative Units-1) level, covering the period from 1991 to 2020. </p> <p>The code used to produce the presented data is available at: <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10793067">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10793067</a>. Human tissue gene expression TPM values for the advanced forensic biology course
<p><strong>Gene expression per tissue</strong></p> <p>This dataset comes from the <a href="https://www.gtexportal.org/home/">Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx)</a> database that gathers gene expression data from various human tissues. Exploring changes in ecosystem service values in strongly human-impacted, contrasting agro-ecological environments
<p>Evaluating the impacts of land-use/land-cover (LULC) changes on ecosystem service values (ESVs) is essential for sustainable use and management of ecosystems. In this study, we evaluated the impact of LULC changes on ESVs over the period 1982–2016/17 in contrasting, strongly human-impacted agro-ecological environments: Guder (highland), Aba Gerima (midland), and Debatie (lowland) watersheds of the Upper Blue Nile basin, Ethiopia. During the study period, the continuous expansion of cultivated land at the expense of natural vegetation (bushland, forest, and grazing land) severely reduced the total ESV by about US$58 thousand (35%) in Aba Gerima and US$31 thousand (29%) in Debatie watersheds. In contrast, the unprecedented expansion of plantations, mainly through the planting of Acacia decurrens, helped the total ESV rebound by about US$71 thousand (54%) in Guder watershed after 2006, after it had decreased by about US$61 thousand (32%) between 1982 and 2006. The reduction in natural forest area was the major contributor to the loss of total ESV in the study watersheds, ranging from a reduction of US$31 thousand (63%) in Debatie to US$96.9 thousand (70%) in Guder between 1982 and 2016/17. On an area-specific basis, LULC changes reduced the average ESV from US$560 ha–1 yr–1 (1982) in Guder to US$306 ha–1 yr–1 (2017) in Debatie watersheds. Specific ESVs such as provisioning (mainly as food production) and regulating services (mainly as erosion control and climate regulation) accounted for most of the total ESVs estimated for the study watersheds. In most cases the total and specific ESVs of the watersheds were negatively associated with the population growth, which in turn was positively associated with the expansion of cultivated land over the study period. In Guder watershed, however, ESVs were positively associated with population growth, especially after 2012. This resulted primarily from the conversion of cultivated land to plantations (predominantly with nitrogen-fixing Acacia decurrens trees) because of the farmers' growing desire to rehabilitate degraded cultivated land while simultaneously generating income through the sale of charcoal from this fast-growing tree. Our results suggest, therefore, that future policy measures and directions should focus on improving vegetation cover through planting multipurpose trees such as Acacia decurrens to prevent future loss of ESV in the midland and lowland regions of the Upper Blue Nile basin and beyond.</p>

SUVfdg: a standard-uptake-value (SUV) body habitus normalizer specific to fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in humans
<p>In PET, several different Standard Uptake Value (SUV) metrics have been proposed utilizing different normalizers in an attempt to take into consideration the patient to patient differences in radionuclide uptake due to differences in body habitus (body weight, surface area, lean body mass). These normalizers are to some extent aribitrary in that they are selected from the list of proposed body habitus metrics, none of which necessarily describes well the distribution volume into which a given radionuclide labeled compound distributes with the body. </p> <p>In this work we propose a new body habitus normalizer, SUV<sub>fdg</sub>, that is specific to the tracer <sup>18</sup>F-FDG and which like previously proposed SUV normalizers is a simple function of a patient's height and weight. Derivation of this metric assumed that absolute normal-liver FDG uptake rate is not itself a function of body habitus (i.e. is not correlated with height, weight, etc). The SUV<sub>fdg</sub> metric was tested in an independent cohort and shown to have little to no correlation with body habitus measures in normal liver, spleen and blood. When applied to normal brain uptake, it was shown to vary as a function of patient age.</p>

The predicted values of HiSIF-DTA on the Davis, KIBA, and Human test sets
<p>We propose a novel DTA prediction method (<strong>HiSIF-DTA</strong>) that enables hierarchical fusion of protein semantic information to enrich protein representations and enhance DTA prediction performance. Simultaneously, we have designed two different backbones for semantic information fusion: <strong><em>Top-Down</em></strong> (TDNet) and <strong><em>Bottom-Up</em></strong> (BUNet). To validate the superiority of the model, we have trained and tested it on DTA datasets (davis and kiba) as well as the CPI dataset (Human). These files contain the predicted values of all models used in HiSIF-DTA on the test sets of these three datasets.</p> <p><strong>**Please note that these predicted values are specific to the models in HiSIF-DTA and the respective test datasets mentioned. **</strong></p>
