Carboxymethyl starch as a reducing and capping agent in the hydrothermal synthesis of selenium nanostructures for use with 3D-printed hydrogel carrier

<p>The hydrothermal method is a cost-effective and eco-friendly route for preparing various nanomaterials. It can utilize a capping agent, such as a polysaccharide, to govern and define the nanoparticle morphology. Elemental selenium nanostructures (spheres and rods) were synthesized and stabilized using a tailor-made carboxymethyl starch (CMS, degree of substitution = 0.3) under hydrothermal conditions. CMS is particularly convenient because it acts simultaneously as the capping and reducing agent, as verified by several analytical techniques, while the reaction relies entirely on green solvents. Furthermore, the effect of sodium selenite concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the nanoparticle size, morphology, microstructure, and chemical composition was investigated to identify the ideal synthesis conditions. A pilot experiment demonstrated the feasibility of implementing the synthesized nanoparticles into vat photopolymerization 3D-printed hydrogel carriers based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). When submersed into the water, the subsequent particle release was confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), promising great potential for use in bio-3D printing and other biomedical applications.</p>

Highly porous Co-doped NiO nanorods: Facile hydrothermal synthesis and electrocatalytic oxygen evolution properties

<p>Highly porous 3d transition metal oxide nanostructures are opening up the exciting area of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts in alkaline medium thanks to their good thermal and chemical stability, excellent physiochemical properties, high specific surface area and abundant nanopores. In this paper, highly porous Co-doped NiO nanorods were successfully synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The porous rod-like nanostructures were preserved with the added cobalt dopant ranging from 1 to 5 at% but were broken into aggregated nanoparticles at higher concentrations of additional cobalt. The catalytic activity of Co-doped NiO nanostructures for OER in an alkaline medium was assayed. The 5%Co-NiO sample showed a drastically enhanced activity. This result could originate from the combination of advantageous characteristics of highly porous NiO nanorods such as large surface area and high porosity as well as the important role of Co dopant that could provide more catalytic active sites, leading to an enhanced catalytic activity of the nanocatalyst.</p>

Data from: Performance improvement of miniaturized ZnO nanowire accelerometer fabricated by refresh hydrothermal synthesis

Miniaturized accelerometers are necessary for evaluating the performance of small devices such as haptics, robotics and simulators. In this study, we fabricated miniaturized accelerometers using well aligned ZnO nanowires. The layer of ZnO nanowires is used for active piezoelectric layer of the accelerometer and copper was chosen as a head mass. Seedless and refresh hydrothermal synthesis methods were conducted to grow ZnO nanowires on the copper substrate and effect of ZnO nanowire length on the accelerometer performance was investigated. The refresh hydrothermal synthesis exhibits longer ZnO nanowires, 12 μm, than the seedless hydrothermal synthesis, 6 μm. Performance of the fabricated accelerometers was verified by comparing with a commercial accelerometer. The sensitivity of the fabricated accelerometer by the refresh hydrothermal synthesis is shown to be 37.7 pA/g, which is about 30 times larger than the previous result.
