Dataset from "In silico assessment of collateral eddy current heating in biocompatible implants subjected to magnetic hyperthermia treatments"

This dataset from the publication entitled "Dataset from "In silico assessment of collateral eddy current heating in biocompatible implants subjected to magnetic hyperthermia treatments" contains simulated data of magnetic hyperthermia treatments for three different indications: colorectal cancer, prostate cancer and head & neck cancer. Since the aim of the study is to evaluate the risk of thermal damage caused by the collateral heating of two common types of passive prostheses (hip and dental implants), eddy currents induced in these implants upon interacting with the externally applied ac field during treatment have been computed for all the evaluated regions. Two different alloys for the implants have been considered for each case as well: Ti6Al4V and CoCrMo. At the same time, besides temperature, the specific abosorption rate (SAR) have been also computed to work out the energy deposition in tissues.

Calculations have been carried out using a het exchange model with and without thermoregulation.

log-log SAR vs T plots have been obtained and proposed as a quick means to pre-check treatment feasibility in each patient. These graphs are thought to be included in treatment planning prior to the clinical procedure.

Other parameters taken into account have been the treatment time (5 and 30 minutes), and the maximum tolerable temperature threshold (1 or 5 ºC, as indicated by the ICNIRP commission), all for three main types of tissues, namely fat, bone and muscle. Each tissue have been simulated using three different field intensities (5, 10 and 15 mT).

The field frequency has been 300 kHz in all cases.

The files "Dataset_description.doc" and "file_scheme.txt" contain the structure and description of the files that make up the dataset.

UPDATES FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS: simulations of the dental implant without thermoregulation have been added.

Experimental evidence that hyperthermia limits offspring provisioning in a temperate-breeding bird

In many vertebrates, parental care can require long bouts of daily exercise, that can span several weeks. Exercise, especially in the heat, raises body temperature, and can lead to hyperthermia. Typical strategies for regulating body temperature during endurance exercise include modifying performance to avoid hyperthermia (anticipatory regulation hypothesis) and allowing body temperature to rise above normothermic levels for brief periods of time (facultative hyperthermia hypothesis). Facultative hyperthermia is commonly employed by desert birds to economize on water, but this strategy may also be important for chick-rearing birds to avoid reducing offspring provisioning when thermoregulatory demands are high. In this study, we tested how chick-rearing birds balance their own body temperature against the need to provision dependent offspring. We experimentally increased the heat dissipation capacity of breeding female tree swallows (Tachicyneta bicolor) by trimming their ventral feathers, and remotely monitored provisioning rates, body temperature, and the probability of hyperthermia. Birds with an experimentally increased capacity to dissipate heat (i.e., trimmed treatment) maintained higher feeding rates than controls at high ambient temperatures ( ≥ 25 ºC), while maintaining lower body temperatures. However, at the highest temperatures (≥25 ºC) trimmed individuals became hyperthermic. These results provide evidence that chick-rearing tree swallows use both anticipatory regulation and facultative hyperthermia during endurance performance. With rising global temperatures, individuals may need to increase their frequency of facultative hyperthermia to maintain nestling provisioning, and thereby maximize reproductive success.

Radiomag Interlaboratory Comparison of Magnetic Hyperthermia Characterisation Measurements: Data

These files contain the raw measurement data reported for the Radiomag interlaboratory comparison of magnetic hyperthermia characterisation measurements. Each heating curve for samples containing magnetic nanoparticles is presented in a separate excel file detailing the corrected-slope technique (CST) recalculation of the specific loss power and intrinsic loss power for that measurement as described in the manuscript. The measurements are organised into separate folders for Rounds 1 and 2 of the interlaboratory study, with further subfolders dividing the results for samples 1 and 2. Round 2 also includes the results for the “blank” pure water sample which was included in this Round. For each laboratory there is 3 repeated measurements of each sample during each round the study.
