Chemical imaging data collected on small wood cubes after impregnation-treatment with phenol formaldehyde resin

This dataset contains UV microspectrophotometry (UMSP) and near infrared (NIR) imaging data from the following publication: Altgen M., Awais M. Altgen D., Klüppel A., Koch G., Mäkelä M., Olbrich A., Rautkari L. (2022) Chemical imaging to reveal the resin distribution in impregnation-treated wood at different spatial scales. Materials & Design, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matdes.2022.111481.

The data was measured on small beech wood cubes (15x15x15 mm3) that were impregnation-treated with a low molecular weight phenol formaldehyde resin. Experimental details can be found in the publication.

The file “NIR sample IDs with weight and dimensional changes.csv” contains the sample IDs as well as the weight percent gains and dimensional changes caused by the resin treatment of each sample in the dataset. To generate the NIR image files, a region of interest of 881 x 384 pixels was selected from the raw image files to produce an image that contains the sample surrounded by background. The spectral data was corrected using the calibration reflectance target values and then converted to absorbance. Each NIR image is stored in a separate MATLAB file (.mat) with the sample ID as the file name.

The file "UMSP sample IDs.csv" contains the sample IDs of the UMSP images. The folder "UMSP image profiles.zip" contains the corresponding UMSP image profiles, which are stored as excel files (.xlsx) with the sample IDs as file names. The files contain the absorbance at 278 nm per pixel with a pixel resolution of 0.25 x 0.25 µm2.

ALMA Titan image cubes for CH3CN, HC3N and HNC observed August 2016 and May 2017

These 3D FITS files contain spectral line emission flux from Titan (in Janskys per beam) as a function of RA, dec. and frequency, observed using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).

ALMA observations of Titan were obtained on 2017-05-08 and 2017-05-16 (as part of ALMA program 2016.A.00014.S; PI: Cordiner) and on 2016-08-18 and 2016-08-19 (as part of ALMA program 2015.1.01023.S; PI: Gurwell). The HNC (J=4-3), HC3N (J=40-39) and CH3CN (J=19-18) transitions were observed in 2017, whereas the HNC (J=4-3), HC3N (J=39-38) and CH3CN (J=19-18) were observed in 2016.

The raw observations were calibrated using standard scripts supplied by the observatory. The resulting measurement sets were continuum-subtracted using low-order polynomial fits to the line-free spectral regions adjacent to our lines of interest. The data were then imaged and cleaned (deconvolved) using the tclean algorithm in CASA 5.6. This routine implicitly corrects for the time-variability of Titan's position and radial velocity with respect to the observer, so the resulting image cubes are in the rest frame of Titan's center-of-mass. To facilitate meaningful intercomparisons, accounting for Titan's varying Geocentric distance, the 2016 and 2017 datasets were convolved to common circular beam dimensions, as projected in the plane of the sky. The image cubes were then cropped to isolate the emission lines of interest.

GALILEO NIMS SPECTRAL IMAGE CUBES: JUPITER OPERATIONS

The natural form of imaging spectrometer data is the spectral image cube. It is normally in band sequential format, but has a dual nature. It is a series of 'images' of the target, each in a different wavelength, in ascending order. It is also a set of spectra, each at a particular line and sample, over the target area. Each spectrum describes a small portion of the area. When transformed into cubes, the data may be analyzed spatially, an image at a time, or spectrally, a spectrum at a time, or in more complex spatial-spectral fashion.
