Annual precipitation and photo-derived vegetation and litter cover (2013-2021) used for analysis in the manuscript “Growing grasses in the desert: Multi-scale Interactions and State Change Reversal in Drylands”

This dataset contains water year precipitation collected from meteorological stations, litter and vegetation cover values derived from overhead photos, and litter and soil accumulation in lateral photos in a long-term experiment (2013-2021) of cross-scale interactions (CSIs) at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Manipulations were initiated in 2013 at 15 experimental blocks, each with 4 treatment plots: plant-scale herbicide of mesquite shrubs, patch-scale connectivity modifiers (ConMods), herbicide + ConMods, control without manipulations. Litter, soil, and vegetation cover were estimated using repeat overhead photographs of microplots within treatment and control plots. Litter and soil accumulation were estimated from lateral photos of ConMods. This dataset utilized QuickBird imagery from 2011 to assess ground cover classes within the Jornada Basin, focusing on bare ground, herbaceous, and shrub cover. Daily precipitation data collected from 13 meteorological stations were used to calculate water year (1 October-30 September) precipitation from 2013 through 2021. This dataset provides supporting data for the manuscript "Growing grasses in the desert: Multi-scale Interactions and State Change Reversal in Drylands" by Peters et al.

Lab disease outcomes data evaluating how antibiotic tolerant vs. non-tolerant cell-free supernatant from Pseudomonas aeruginosa affects the interaction between a fungal pathogen (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) and amphibian (Rana sylvaticus), 2022.

Microbes living on hosts and in the environment can play a key role in helping hosts to combat pathogens. However, antibiotic-induced alterations to microbial metabolite production could disrupt this dynamic. Here, we investigated whether antibiotic tolerance influences the anti-pathogenic properties of host-associated (living on the host; biofilms) and environmental (living in the soil of water column; planktonic) microbes in vitro and in vivo. For our model host and pathogen, we used the amphibian (Rana sylvatica)-Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) system. For our model host-associated (biofilm) and environmental (planktonic) microbes, we used four strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa that vary in their tolerance to antibiotics and their biofilm-forming capabilities: Planktonic, non-antibiotic tolerant (ΔsagS/VC); Planktonic, antibiotic tolerant (ΔsagS::sagS_L154A); Biofilm, non-antibiotic tolerant (ΔsagS::sagS_D105A); Biofilm, antibiotic tolerant (ΔsagS::sagS). We collected cell-free supernatants (CFS) from each strain to examine the effects of metabolites. We conducted four experiments. In our pathogen-only exposures to test direct effects of metabolites on Bd, we exposed Bd zoospores to each P. aeruginosa CFS at six concentrations. After 11 days of growth, we measured relative abundance of Bd across each treatment. In our host-only exposures to test effects of metabolites on host disease outcomes, we placed R. sylvatica tadpoles in individual units containing each P. aeruginosa CFS. After 48 hours, water was changed into clean well water (no CFS). Bd zoospores were immediately added to each experimental unit following the water change. After 5 days of Bd exposure, we measured snout-vent length (SVL), mass, developmental stage, and Bd quantification in the mouthparts using qPCR for each tadpole. Species interactions during succession in the western Cascade Range of Oregon, 1990 to present

The factors that contribute to plant species establishment and decline following disturbance determine the rates and patterns of successional change of a system. In this long-term field experiment, we test the commonly held assumption that competition for space or resources by dominant species determines the outcome of succession. Specifically, we examine the population- and community-level consequences of removing one or more potentially dominant species from the post-disturbance community after clearcut logging and burning of a mature/old-growth Douglas-fir forest. Experimental treatments include: (1) removal of early-seral annual, Senecio sylvaticus, or perennial, Epilobium angustifolium—or both—to test the influences of these early-seral dominants on subsequent community development; (2) removal of all species except Senecio or Epilobium, to test whether the decline of these early-seral dominants is driven by competitive displacement; or (3) removal of shade-tolerant forest species that dominate subsequent stages of succession—Rubus ursinus or Berberis nervosa plus Gaultheria shallon—to test the influences of these long-lived perennials on understory development. The experiment is a randomized block design comprising eight removal treatments plus a control replicated in each of 25 blocks. Removal (reduction in competition) is achieved by removing seedlings or vegetative stems annually from a treatment area of 2.5 x 2.5 m. Sample plots (1 x 1 m) centered within these are used to estimate cover of all vascular plant species and, for the first 8 yr of the experiment, stem density and height, facilitating estimates of above-ground biomass. Pre-harvest data were collected in 1990, logging/burning occurred in 1991, and removal treatments and post-treatment sampling were initiated in 1992. Ungulate-Forest Interactions in Partially Harvested Oak-Pine Stands in Central Massachusetts 2009

Ungulates are attracted to forest openings created by natural disturbance and timber harvesting due to the abundance of high quality browse in these openings. Despite the increased activity and browsing of ungulates in forest openings, the importance of browsing relative to abiotic factors such as light on forest regeneration is often unclear. In southern New England, medium-intensity harvesting is the predominant forest disturbance attracting white-tailed deer and moose. Oaks are the foundation hardwood taxon and predominant timber tree in the region and are in decline. Hence, the effects of ungulate browsing on oak forests are of great interest to ecologists, conservationists and forest and wildlife managers. We sampled tree regeneration and ungulate foraging activity across a range of canopy disturbances (35-90% basal area removed) in 34 stands of the Quabbin and Ware River Watershed Forests. Browsing was very high across the plots with about 80% of red maple and oak stems browsed. Taller stems were generally browsed more frequently than shorter stems. Oak regeneration in the smaller size classes was generally lower in stands with higher percent cover of hay-scented fern. The proportion of browsed red maples and oaks generally increased with increasing density of these taxa. Despite intensive herbivory, oaks appear to be regenerating well with increased light in these partially harvested stands.

Ungulate-Disturbance Interactions in Hemlock Ecosystems at Harvard Forest 2012-2013

Densities of ungulates are often associated with recent forest disturbances such as fire, logging and insect outbreaks, as increased resources stimulate tree regeneration, leading to abundant available browse. Despite the often significant role that ungulates play in disturbed forests, surprisingly little is known about ungulate-disturbance interactions, and ungulate herbivory is often excluded from examinations of forest response to disturbance. In the Northeastern United States, a large-scale insect outbreak, the hemlock wooly adelgid (HWA), has begun to have important effects on hemlock forests both directly and indirectly (i.e., by preemptive salvage logging). No studies have examined the interactions of both moose and deer activity with these associated canopy disturbances. Our objectives are twofold: to determine (1) the response of ungulates to varying disturbance types and intensities and (2) the influence of ungulate interactions with canopy disturbance on vegetation, other biota, and ecosystem processes. We will examine the relative abundance of moose and deer in four treatments (2 replicates) at the Hemlock Removal Experiment using three indices of ungulate activity: pellet group density, evidence of past browsing on seedlings and saplings, and the occurrence of animals using game cameras. We will also monitor the response of vegetation to ungulate browsing by sampling woody and herbaceous vegetation in fenced exclosures and paired controls in disturbed and undisturbed plots.

This dataset contains plant and litter cover estimates derived from overhead photos collected from microplots in a long-term experiment (2013-present) of cross-scale interactions (CSIs) at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Experimental treatments were initiated in 2013 at 15 experimental blocks, each with 4 treatment plots: plant-scale herbicide of mesquite shrubs, patch-scale connectivity modifiers (ConMods), herbicide + ConMods, control without manipulations. Repeat, overhead (downward-looking) photographs of ten "microplots" in each plot were taken for estimation of litter, soil, and vegetation cover in the experimental treatment and control plots over time. Photographs were rotated and then cropped to provide standardized areas, and then were analyzed with USDA SamplePoint software to determine coverage by ~27 plant, litter or other cover classes on a 100 point grid. Raw and corrected cover estimates are provided. This study is ongoing and new data will be added annually. Cover estimates are derived from photos in EDI dataset knb-lter-jrn.210413004.

Experimental treatments were initiated in 2013 at 15 experimental blocks, each with 4 treatment plots: plant-scale herbicide of mesquite shrubs, patch-scale connectivity modifiers (ConMods), herbicide + ConMods, control without manipulations. Repeat, lateral (side-looking) photographs of ten "microplots" in each ConMods and herbicide+ConMods plot were taken for estimation of litter, soil, and vegetation cover in the experimental treatment and control plots over time. Photographs were analyzed with SigmaScan software to determine vertical accumulation of litter and soil withing the microplots. This study is complete and ended in 2017. These vertical accumulation estimates are derived from photos in EDI dataset knb-lter-jrn.210413006.

The interactive effects of nitrate and road salt on benthic algal assemblages in an artificial stream experiment

To investigate and quantify the multi-tiered responses of benthic algal assemblages to the impacts of road salt and nitrate, we created artificial flow-through streams with terracotta vessels with nutrient diffusing substrates (NDS) containing varying concentrations of both salt (0-7500 mg/L) and nitrate (0-5.9 mg/L) and incubated for 56 days during the summer. This work was done at the University of Michigan Biological Station's stream research facility. The streams and algae were sampled on day 7, 14, 28, and 56. The algae pigments were quantified via a fluoroprobe and diatoms were quantified with counts on slides. Finally, both 13s and 16s DNA sequencing was performed on all of the samples.

Impacts of microplastics on wetland ecosystem dynamics: a mesocosm study of trophic interactions and community responses, 2021-2025

This dataset documents a mesocosm experiment conducted to evaluate the ecological impacts of microplastics (MP) on wetland communities representative of eastern USA wetlands. The study focused on key organisms across trophic levels, including tadpoles (Lithobates pipiens), snails (Helisoma trivolvis), zooplankton (Daphnia pulex), phytoplankton, and periphyton communities, to assess the effects of three microplastic types (low-density polyethylene–LDPE, medium-density polystyrene–PS, and high-density polyester–PES) at two concentrations (1 mg/L and 5 mg/L), alongside a no-microplastic control. Experimental units consisted of 70 mesocosms (19-L buckets) with 10 replicates per treatment, established between July 1–15, 2021, at Binghamton University’s Ecological Research Facility. Response variables included survival and developmental traits (mass, snout-vent length, shell width) of tadpoles and snails, microplastic ingestion, zooplankton abundance, phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll and phycocyanin concentrations), and periphyton mass. The dataset provides comprehensive measurements of community responses and water quality parameters, offering insights into the ecological consequences of microplastic pollution in wetland ecosystems. This dataset is suitable for researchers studying ecotoxicology, wetland ecology, and the impacts of anthropogenic pollutants on aquatic food webs.

Rhizaria abundance, biomass, and trophic interactions at the Northern Gulf of Alaska LTER site during summer 2023 cruise KM2308

This dataset consists of Rhizaria abundance, biomass, number of individuals with captured prey, and number of individuals that interacted with algal cells, by taxonomic group. Taxonomic group ID characteristics and biomass calculation details are also presented. Sampling occurred on NGA-LTER research cruise KM2308 during summer 2023 at four stations and four different depth-intervals. Seawater samples were collected from CTD-secured Niskin bottles, concentrated by reverse filtration with 50 μm mesh, and analyzed back in the lab with inverted epi-fluorescence microscopy. Excel spreadsheets were converted to CSV files for preservation. These data are part of the Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research (NGA LTER) program. The LTER program is a National Science Foundation–funded network of 28 sites nationwide that focus on the influence of long-term and large-scale phenomenon on ecosystems. Additional funding for sampling is provided by the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB), the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS), and the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (EVOS) via the Gulf Watch Alaska program.

WSC 2006: Spatial interactions among ecosystem services in the Yahara Watershed

Understanding spatial distributions, synergies and tradeoffs of multiple ecosystem services (benefits people derive from ecosystems) remains challenging. We analyzed the supply of 10 ecosystem services for 2006 across a large urbanizing agricultural watershed in the Upper Midwest of the United States, and asked: (i) Where are areas of high and low supply of individual ecosystem services, and are these areas spatially concordant across services? (ii) Where on the landscape are the strongest tradeoffs and synergies among ecosystem services located? (iii) For ecosystem service pairs that experience tradeoffs, what distinguishes locations that are win win exceptions from other locations? Spatial patterns of high supply for multiple ecosystem services often were not coincident locations where six or more services were produced at high levels (upper 20th percentile) occupied only 3.3 percent of the landscape. Most relationships among ecosystem services were synergies, but tradeoffs occurred between crop production and water quality. Ecosystem services related to water quality and quantity separated into three different groups, indicating that management to sustain freshwater services along with other ecosystem services will not be simple. Despite overall tradeoffs between crop production and water quality, some locations were positive for both, suggesting that tradeoffs are not inevitable everywhere and might be ameliorated in some locations. Overall, we found that different areas of the landscape supplied different suites of ecosystem services, and their lack of spatial concordance suggests the importance of managing over large areas to sustain multiple ecosystem services. Canterbury Museum (CMNZ) collection insect specimen-plant flower interactions

<p>This dataset compromises insect-plant flower interactions recorded from the entomology collections of Canterbury Museum, New Zealand (CMNZ). All invertebrate records were extracted from the Museum Vernon database. This included field collection metadata indicating if an insect and plant flower interaction had occurred. A large proportion of records are specimens collected as part of research by Richard Primack in the 1970s, from insects collected from flowering inflorences. Data was cleaned using OpenRefine v.3.6.2. Insect and plant names were reconciled using the GlobalNames extension in OpenRefine. Data was prepared for submission to the Global Biotic Interaction (GloBI) network.</p> <p>This data makes part of a paper submission to the Journal of Applied Entolomolgy Call for Papers on neglected insects pollinators. If accepted this publication will be linked to this dataset.</p> <p>This version included name updates for insect species, spreadsheet data used to produce summary statistics for the manuscript submission and the README file.</p>

The local extinction of Cedrus atlantica in the Iberian Peninsula could have been completed due to biological interaction

<p>This data set is used to explore the possibility that <em>Cedrus atlantica</em> (Endl.) Carri&egrave;re and <em>Pinus nigra</em> Arnold could have interacted in the past, mutually excluding each other in the areas with suitable conditions for both species and, where, ultimately, the one that was most competitive would remain. The species show very well differenciated niches and a distribution of their habitats segregated by continents (<em>P. nigra</em> in Europe and <em>C. atlantica</em> in Africa), which responds to differences in climatic affinities. However, the contact of their distributions in bordering areas suggests that <em>C. atlantica</em> maintained its presence in the Iberian Peninsula until recent times, and that <em>P. nigra</em> could have displaced it due to its higher prevalence on the continent.</p>

Data from: mPRIME Study - Interaction of Insulin Resistance with Cognition, Lifestyle, and Mental Health

<p>The presented datasets were collected within the <em>m</em>PRIME study, a prospective, observational study of the H2020 project Prevention and Remediation of Insulin Multimorbidity in Europe (PRIME) (grant No. 847879). The study investigates the interaction of insulin resistance with cognition, lifestyle, and mental health by combining traditional methods with ambulatory assessment and sensor-based data collection. Recruitment took place between March 2021 and March 2023 at the University Hospital Frankfurt, Germany.</p> <p>The eligibility criteria for the study were as follows: Age above 18 years, no intake of antidiabetic medication, insulin or glucocorticoids, no existing type 1 diabetes mellitus or gestational diabetes, no diagnoses of bipolar I disorder, schizophrenia, organically caused mental disorders and substance dependence, no severe neurological disorders, no current pregnancy or breastfeeding, no non-correctable visual impairments, no participation in medication-related studies within the last 6 months, no use of weight-reducing medications or a diet within the last 3 months, sufficient proficiency in German to&nbsp;complete questionnaires and neuropsychological tests.</p> <p>All participants in the <em>m</em>PRIME study provided written informed consent. The study protocol and procedures were approved by the local ethics committee.</p> <p><strong>Study Design</strong></p> <p>Individuals completed a baseline assessment and a one-week ambulatory assessment. The baseline assessment included: socio-demographic information, blood samples, anthropometric measures, neuropsychological tests, and several questionnaires. In addition, individuals were introduced to smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA), food protocols, and the use of sensors (continuous glucose monitor, accelerometer). Food protocols and EMA were conducted on three consecutive days, including two weekdays and one weekend day (Thursday to Saturday or Sunday to Tuesday). Several times a day, individuals were prompted via their smartphone to complete a working memory task and answer questions about stress, affect, and food intake. The continuous glucose monitor and accelerometer were worn continuously for 1 week.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

MAMEM Phase I Dataset - A dataset for multimodal human-computer interaction using biosignals and eye tracking information

<p>This dataset combines multimodal biosignals and eye tracking information gathered under a human-computer interaction framework. The dataset was developed in the vein of the MAMEM project that aims to endow people with motor disabilities with the ability to edit and author multimedia content through mental commands and gaze activity. The dataset includes EEG, eye-tracking, and physiological (GSR and Heart rate) signals along with demographic, clinical and behavioral data collected from 36 individuals (18 able-bodied and 18 motor-impaired). Data were collected during the interaction with specifically designed interface for web browsing and multimedia content manipulation and during imaginary movement tasks. Alongside these data we also include evaluation reports both from the subjects and the experimenters as far as the experimental procedure and collected dataset are concerned. We believe that the presented dataset will contribute towards the development and evaluation of modern human-computer interaction systems that would foster the integration of people with severe motor impairments back into society.</p>
