Sutra to DNA : An interdisciplinary approach to cultural heritage preservation
<p>Materials pertaining to the project Sutra2DNA. We have chosen the Diamond Sūtra as the first Buddhist text to be encoded in DNA. The DNA is encased in metal capsule, which in turn are housed in specially designed, 3D printed miniature stūpas.</p> <p>A QR code with the DOI of this archive will be printed on the miniature stūpas. Antibiotic resistant pathogen outbreak investigation: an interdisciplinary module to teach fundamentals of evolutionary biology
<p>The evolution of resistance to antibiotics provides a timely and relevant topic for teaching undergraduate students evolutionary biology. Here, we present a module incorporating modified sequencing data from eight antibiotic resistant pathogen outbreaks in hospital settings with bioinformatics and phylogenetic analyses. This module uses whole genome sequencing data from hospital outbreaks investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide examples of antibiotic resistance spread. Students work in groups to analyze outbreak data to identify the bacterial species and antibiotic resistance genes, to infer a phylogenetic tree examining relatedness among isolates, and to determine a possible source of the outbreak. Students then compile their results in individual reports and provide recommendations for preventing the further spread of antibiotic resistant organisms. In addition to providing genomic outbreak data, we include a teaching concepts guide discussing three integral components of the module: how evolutionary biology concepts of natural selection and competition impact antibiotic resistance; outbreak investigation information to aid in phylogenetic analysis and creation of recommendations; and instructions for the bioinformatics protocol. Completion of this module provides students an opportunity to think critically about the evolution of resistance, practice bioinformatics techniques, and relate evolutionary biology to current events.</p>

From Ridge 2 Reef: An Interdisciplinary Model for Training the Next Generation of Environmental Problem Solvers
<p>This dataset contains the raw data from the evaluation instruments and accompanies the manuscript: "From Ridge 2 Reef: An Interdisciplinary Model for Training the Next Generation of Environmental Problem Solvers". It contains all trainee and advisor interviews from 2018 - 2022, as well as a select few partner interviews. It also contains pre and post-annual trainee survey data and the codebook to decipher the survey data. Rubric criteria and scores are included for trainees enrolled in the R2R Communication Skills course. The R script contains the statistical analyses reported in the manuscript and code used to generate figures.</p>
Introducing the DHARPA Project: An interdisciplinary lab to enable critical DH practice
<p>Traditional humanities research has been leveraged but also destabilised by the increasing accessibility of digitized sources and computational tools for analysis. As traditional close reading methods alone are no longer sufficient to analyse such an unprecedented mass of digital data, a plethora of platforms have appeared in order to help researchers query and visualise the networks and patterns latent in these sources. However, this flood of data and push-button technologies has also threatened to obscure through abundance and instill in scholars a false sense of mastery. Some scholars have criticized DH for its naive and starry-eyed application of computational techniques, citing not only how the uncritical adoption of black-box technologies affects substantive research but also how it reproduces a positivism at odds with the purpose of humanities inquiry (e.g., Liu 2012; Chun 2013; Jagoda 2013; Raley 2013; Allington et al 2016; Brennan 2017; Grimshaw 2018). Both uncritical DH practice and the software it employs can be compared to a “Mechanical Turk,” with the decisions and interventions made by the researcher hidden from view and only the well-oiled and seemingly autonomous product on display. These trends have constituted a crisis for humanities scholarship but also an extraordinary opportunity to transform the field.</p> <p>In this presentation, we introduce the Digital History Advanced Research Projects Accelerator (DHARPA), a diverse and interdisciplinary research and development laboratory based in the University of Luxembourg’s Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH). While software development is central to our project, our aim is not merely to build more tools but to encourage methodologies that self-reflexively examine the interaction of technology and historical practice. We want to show how the application of expertise works in tandem with technology to produce knowledge, how digitally enabled research is not a product but rather a process, reliant on the critical engagement of the scholar. We want scholars to open the black box and to be empowered to tinker with what’s inside.</p> <p>DHARPA is multifaceted:</p> <p><strong>Software and infrastructure development:</strong></p> <p>Our software will be free and open-source and backed by a long-term sustainability plan and training opportunities to encourage widespread and confident adoption. Users will be able to run the software remotely or to download the software for local use, and to rely on a generalizable hosting infrastructure that ensures privacy, portability, and sustainability. Built for both humanities scholars and social scientists, we plan to include modules for: data ingestion, data standardisation, textual analysis, network analysis, geographical analysis and bring them within a seamless environment, where work can flow between tasks from experimentation and modelling to presentation and dissemination.</p> <p><strong>Developing best practice through design:</strong></p> <p>Central to DHARPA is the creation of a Virtual Research Environment that will enable scholars to engage with their data while promoting critical historical practice. Our interactive software will cultivate the holistic practice of interweaving data, code, computational functionality, and metadata with a narrative of researcher’s choices and actions. Documenting academic labour makes its value evident, while also making it reproducible and keeping it honest: it allows scholars to take ownership of their interventions.</p> <p><strong>Collaborations:</strong></p> <p>DHARPA staffs a responsive laboratory that will rapidly prototype and launch applied solutions. We work with other academics at the C²DH and within a wider, international and interdisciplinary scholarly community.</p> <p><strong>Training and outreach:</strong></p> <p>As the project progresses, we will be introducing our software to the academic community through workshops at the University of Luxembourg and international conferences as well as through publications. Further to our ethos that scholarship is an iterative process, we welcome feedback to improve our software and specifications.</p>

Interdisciplinary Composition of E-Learning Platforms based on Reusable Low-Code Adapters
<p>E-learning platforms are becoming increasingly popular and, accordingly, are also being used more and more by teachers at schools and professors at universities. They are used to distribute educational material digitally to students, but also to offer the possibility to upload and collect assignments, solve tasks, and view grades. This thesis addresses the problems of the inflexibility of established platforms, assists lecturers in designing their courses, and motivates and supports students in their learning. Under the aspect of generalization, a concept for a software product line for the demands of various fields of study is designed, which provides lecturers with a basic platform and allows them to use low-code adapters to design and modify their courses according to their needs.</p>

<p>Data set with 127 funding programmes for interdisciplinary research. Table summary (excel) and documents (pdfs).<br> <br> This data set covers funding opportunities to support interdisciplinarity (and other forms of crossdisciplinary research) in Europe and North America. The data has been collected in two rounds. The first round was between November 2018 and February 2019, and the second January–February 2022. Data set covers funding opportunities from both public and private sources, and all scholarly disciplines in both STEM and SSH. The database covered all Pan-European funding and national data sets from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, Sweden and the United Kingdom.</p> <p>I collected the guidelines for applicants from each of the funding programmes selected. These were usually in PDF format, and are included in this file. I used the data set to analyse the role of social sciences and humanities in interdisciplinary research. This study will be published in Social Epistemology. Internet-based interdisciplinary therapeutic group for perinatal anxiety and depression - a randomized pilot study during COVID-19
<p><strong>Abstract</strong>:</p> <p><strong>Background</strong>: Recent years have seen growing interest in the impact that stress and depressive/anxiety symptomatology have on mothers, fetal development, the mother-baby relationship and infant development. Depressed mothers spend less time making eye-contact with their babies, and caressing and talking to them, which can cause delays in cognitive and emotional development. Early interventions promote reductions in mothers’ stress and anxiety symptoms along with improvements in their ability to read infant cues appropriately. Group perinatal care and internet-based therapeutic interventions were essential during the Covid period and telemedicine ensures continuity of contact with high-risk populations. The aim of this novel study was to assess the effects of interdisciplinary online therapeutic group in at-risk mothers and babies during the Covid-19 pandemic in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Barcelona (Spain).</p> <p><strong>Method</strong>: An interdisciplinary team offered gestating women and mothers comprehensive care in a protective environment in a Primary Health Care Center. Pregnant women and new mothers were screened to detect depressive-anxiety symptomatology through EPDS/STAI questionnaires. A total of 135 babies were born from March 2020 to June 2021, during the pandemic, and 72 women met high-risk criteria for anxiety or depression. Some 37 pregnant women and mother-baby dyads were treated in the therapeutic group and compared with 27 women randomly selected from the control group, who received treatment as usual. A blinded pediatric follow-up was established when the babies were 6 months old to monitor their development through the Llevant Scale. The course of the mothers’ symptomatology was also assessed.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: We obtained a significant decrease in depressive-anxiety symptomatology (EPDS p=0.000; STAI state p=0.015 and STAI trait p=0.001 at 6 months of life) in the therapeutic group compared with controls. Follow-up at 6 months demonstrated significant differences between groups in assessment of the babies’ development (manipulation p=0.003; language p=0.000; sociability p=0.000). The therapeutic group showed no difficulties in any areas of development.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Interdisciplinary online therapeutic group helps to ensure healthy development of the baby and reduction of the mothers’ depressive-anxiety symptomatology. Future research should involve larger samples to explore the impact of online group interventions in both mothers and babies.</p> <p><strong>Trial registration: </strong>The study is registered at Jordi Gol i Gurina Foundation number 21/276-P.</p>
