Interlocked thin-ply reinforcements for improved fracture toughness and compression after impact - 0 degree tabs

This dataset contains data showing the effect of thin-ply reinforcement units, interlocked with a tab-and-slit geometry, on the fracture toughness of CFRP laminates. This dataset forms an addition to the dataset previously published here: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1476886. The previous dataset contains toughness data for reinforcements with tabs at 45 degrees. This dataset contains toughness data for reinforcements with tabs at 0 degrees.

The reinforcement concept was first presented at the 18th European Conference on Composite Materials (2018, Athens, Greece). More information on the concept can be found at: http://wwwf.imperial.ac.uk/aeronautics/research/pinholab/interlock-tabs/. Links to publications connected to this data will be added to the Zenoto meta-data as they are published.

For the reinforcement concept, both mode I and mode II fracture toughnesses were measured. The mode I data was acquired using DCB specimens, and the mode II data was obtained from 4-point end notch flexure (4ENF) tests. Force, displacement, crack length, and strain energy release rate during the test are provided for all specimens.

Interlocked thin-ply reinforcements for improved fracture toughness and compression after impact

This dataset contains data showing the effect of interlocked thin-ply reinforcement units on the fracture toughness and compression after impact strength of CFRP laminates. For both the fracture toughness and the CAI experiments, tests were conducted on non-reinforced baseline specimens, as well as reinforced specimens. These experiments were conducted to test a reinforcement concept, consisting of creating reinforcement units by interlocking two thin-ply prepreg layers with a tab-and-slit geometry. These reinforcement units are then inserted between the plies of a regular composite lay-up.

This reinforcement concept was first presented at the 18th European Conference on Composite Materials (2018, Athens, Greece). More information on the concept can be found at: http://wwwf.imperial.ac.uk/aeronautics/research/pinholab/interlock-tabs/.

The fracture toughness section of this dataset contains both mode I and mode II data. The mode I data was acquired using DCB specimens, and the mode II data was obtained from 4-point end notch flexure tests. Force, displacement, crack length, and strain energy release rate during the test are provided for all specimens.

The CAI section of the dataset contains post-impact C-scans, as well as force, displacement, and strain gauge data from the subsequent compression tests.

Mechanical Comparison of Arrangement Strategies for Topological Interlocking Assemblies: Abaqus input files

Topological Interlocking assemblies are arrangements of blocks kinematically constrained by a fixed frame, such that all rigid body motions of each block are constrained only by its permanent contact with other blocks and the frame. In the literature several blocks are introduced that can be arranged into different interlocking assemblies.

In this study we investigate the influence of arrangement on the overall structural behaviour of the resulting interlocking assemblies.
This is performed using the Versatile Block, as it can be arranged in three different doubly periodic ways given by wallpaper symmetries.

Our focus lies on the load transfer mechanisms from the assembly onto the frame.
For fast a priori evaluation of the assemblies we introduce a combinatorial model called Interlocking Flows.

To investigate our assemblies from a mechanical point of view we conduct several finite element studies. These reveal a strong influence of arrangement on the structural behaviour, for instance, an impact on both the point and amount of maximum deflection.
The results of the finite element analysis are in very good agreement with the predictions of the Interlocking Flow model.

Interlocking Hugging Bear Pepper Shaker
This glazed ceramic pepper shaker was discovered during salvage excavations within an old and since buried dump ear Service Road at MSU. Most artifacts in the assemblage date to the 1940s - 1960s. This pepper shaker originally would have been part of an interlocking set of hugging bear shakers. Designed by Ruth Van Tellingen, these shakers were the very first interlocking/hugging salt and pepper shakers, commonly known as "huggers". These have since become an incredibly popular style of shakers. Production of Van Tellingen interlocking shakers began in 1947. She filed a patent for the design in 1949 that was granted in 1951. The lack of a patent number or "Patent Pending" on the base suggests this set was made very early in production, sometime in 1947-1949. For more information, check out Emily's blog where she uses patents to trace the interesting life of Ruth Van Telligen. Model made by Jack A. Biggs using the Artec Space Spider structured light scanner. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

DIC Images and Data of In-Plane Cyclic Testing of a 3D-Woven Layer-to-Layer Angle Interlock Composite

Data behind the publications:

C. Oddy, M. Song, C. Stewart, B. El Said, M. Ekh, S. Hallett and Martin Fagerström: On and Off-Axis Cyclic Behaviour of 3D-Woven Composites: Experimental Testing and Macroscale Modelling. Submitted for international publication.

For each test sample orientation and excel file is provided. This includes the machinedata giving the time, machine displacement and force. On another sheet, informationfrom the DIC analysis is given, including the time and force signal organised accordingto the image frame number. The DIC images are also provided.

The testing was carried out using a serial camera DIC system. However, as part of this publication, the images have only been provided from one of the camera systems. They have also been exported at a lower image quality than the original analysis. The authors' can recommend the use of open source DIC software, for example DICe (https://github.com/dicengine/dice), to carry out any type of further image processing. Processing the stereo image as a 2D analysis at a lower image quality may lead to some deviations in the extracted strain or displacement fields. The authors however have compared the results and have not seen any notable inconsistencies. We hope that these images can be useful to you in your own research endeavours!

Bio-inspired Interlocking Micro-Patterning for Tunable, Switchable and Selective Adhesion in Wet and Dusty Environments

Abstract of the related article: Achieving adhesion under unfavourable conditions, such as when van der Waals interaction is not available or in dust environments, is crucial in applications ranging from surgical sutures to wound-healing tapes, underwater adhesives, robotic grippers, and space grasping.
Interestingly, plants, animals, and microorganisms living in such environmental conditions, show surface morphological traits optimised to achieve mechanical interlocking. Thus, they achieve an effective work of adhesion thanks to the interplay of friction and interfacially-storeable elastic energy, which otherwise typically suppress adhesion.
In this work, we provide the design and fabrication fundamentals for achieving tailorable, switchable and robust mechanical adhesion under a general environmental condition, such as wet or dusty, bio-mimicking natural solutions.
A theoretical framework for the design of mechanical adhesion, based on mean field continuum contact mechanics, is suggested, and validated experimentally. This study can pave the way for the development of new technologies, to be employed in situations where conventional adhesives may be ineffective, such as for surfaces exposed to water, solvent vapors, lubricants, high temperatures, dusty environments, high vacuum, or aerospace applications, or processes where switching and selective adhesion is needed such as grasping and sorting applications in semiconductor industry.

The files are named after the numbering of the Figure in which they are used.
Description of the scripts as following:

- FigureS5_ABCD.nb is a mathematica script to visualize the normalized single pair interaction for spherical interlockers, relating the dimensionless axial force to the dimensionless axial position.

- Figure6_AnalyticalModel.nb is used to obtain the theoretical probability density function of the distance between microstructures when they follow a uniform distribution over a circular area.

-Figure5.nb is a mathematica script used to perform a parametric study on double conical interlockers, varying the R/I_0 ratio, in approach/recede motion in dilute/dense conditions

-Figure6_xyz_123.py is a python script used to perform Montecarlo simulations, it computes the histogram of distances between points randomly spread (lattice distributed, uniformly distributed, quasi-random distributed) on a unit circle.

-FigureS8B.nb is a mathematica script used to average all the force contributions during the detachment phase of double conical patterned surfaces in order to get the Equation of state of the system, relating the normalized pressure to the out of plane axial displacement.

- FigureS5_EFGH.nb is a mathematica script used to perform a parametric study on spherical interlockers, varying the friction coefficient value, in approach/recede motion in dilute/dense conditions.

- Figure4.nb is a mathematica script used to perform a parametric study on spherical interlockers, varying the R/I_0 ratio in dilute/dense conditions.

- FigureS6_EFGH.nb is a mathematica script used to perform a parametric study on double conical interlockers, varying the friction coefficient value, in approach/recede motion in dilute/dense conditions.

- FigureS8A.nb is a mathematica script used to average all the force contributions during the attachment phase of double conical patterned surfaces in order to get the Equation of state of the system, relating the normalized pressure to the out of plane axial displacement.

- FigureS2.rar is a folder with images of the dust characterization (coarse.tif; fine.tif; extrafine.tif) with python scripts to analyse the said images (ImageAnalysis.py) and extract the histogram of the equivalent particle diameter (HistogramPlot.py)

- FigureS6_ABCD.nb is a mathematica script to visualize the normalized single pair interaction for double conical interlockers, relating the dimensionless axial force to the dimensionless axial position.
