Dataset and replication information for It's About Time: How to Study Intertemporal Choice in Systems Design
<p>Dataset and replication package for the paper <em>It's About Time: How to Study Intertemporal Choice in Systems Design</em> (Fagerholm, F., De los Ríos, A., Cárdenas Castro, C., Gil, J., Chatzigeorgiou, A., Ampatzoglou, A., Becker, C. (2023). It’s About Time: How To Study Intertemporal Choice in Systems Design. Information and Software Technology.). The dataset consists of answers to a scenario-based questionnaire that collects data on intertemporal choice in the context of software development. An analysis script is provided to show the details of the calculations and analyses performed for the paper. The replication package includes the protocol for data collection sessions and different versions of the task scenario and questionnaire. More information is given in the description file.</p>
Data from: Are capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) sensitive to lost opportunities? The role of opportunity costs in intertemporal choice
<p class="western"><span>Principles of economics predict that the costs associated with obtaining rewards can influence choice. When individuals face choices between a smaller, immediate option and a larger, later option, they often experience opportunity costs associated with waiting for delayed rewards because they must forego the opportunity to make other choices. We evaluated how reducing opportunity costs affects delay tolerance in capuchin monkeys. After choosing the larger option, in the <i>High cost</i> condition subjects had to wait for the delay to expire, whereas in the <i>Low cost different</i> condition they could perform a new choice during the delay. To assess the effect of intake rate on choices, the <i>Low cost same</i> condition had the same intake rate ratio as the <i>High cost</i> condition. We found that capuchins attended both to intake rates and to opportunity costs. They chose the larger option more often in the <i>Low cost different</i> and <i>Low cost same</i> conditions than in the <i>High cost</i> condition, and more often in the <i>Low cost different</i> condition than in the <i>Low cost same</i> condition. Understanding how non-human primates represent and use costs in making decisions not only helps to develop theoretical frameworks to explain their choices but also addresses similarities with and differences from human decision making. These outcomes provide insights into the origins of human economic behaviour.</span></p>

<p>This is the replication package for Dertwinkel-Kalt, Gerhardt, Riener, Schwerter, and Strang, “Concentration Bias in Intertemporal Choice,” <em>Review of Economic Studies</em> 89, no. 3 (2022): 1314–1334, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/restud/rdab043" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://doi.org/10.1093/restud/rdab043</a>.</p> <p>The package includes the <a href="https://www.otree.org">oTree</a> code for running the consumption experiment and the <a href="https://www.ztree.uzh.ch/en.html">z-Tree</a> code for running the money experiment described in the article.</p> <p>It also includes the <a href="https://www.stata.com">Stata</a> code of all hypothesis tests and statistics reported in the article (figures, tables, numbers reported in the text) as well as the data on which the code runs. Moreover, it includes the <a href="https://www.r-project.org">R</a> code of the calibration exercise mentioned in Section 4.</p>

Data from: The role of ventromedial prefrontal cortex in reward valuation and future thinking during intertemporal choice
<p>The paper investigates the effect of reward magnitude and episodic future thinking (EFT) cues on delay discounting (DD) in 12 patients with lesions to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC patients) and 41 healthy controls. In the Standard condition, participants viewed pairs of monetary amounts (of different magnitude) and were asked to make hypothetical choices between smaller-immediate rewards and larger rewards available after a delay. In the EFT condition, participants imagined personal events to occur at the delays associated with the larger-delayed rewards. We found that DD was steeper in vmPFC patients compared to controls, and not modulated by reward magnitude. However, EFT cues reduced DD in vmPFC patients as well as controls. </p> <p>This dataset reports individual and group data on the subjective value of small and large rewards at the different task delays, the resulting area under the curve (AuC), and the number of inconsistent choices during DD. </p> <p>A summary of the relevant variables and variable legenda is reported on the README file. </p>

Data from: Does fertility status influence impulsivity and risk taking in human females? Adaptive influences on intertemporal choice and risky decision making
Informed by the research on adaptive decision making in other animal species, this study investigated human females' intertemporal and risky choices across the ovulatory cycle. We tested the hypothesis that at peak fertility, women who are exposed to environments that signal availability of higher quality mates (by viewing images of attractive males), become more impulsive and risk-seeking in economic decision tasks. To test this, we collected intertemporal and risky choice measures before and after exposure to images of either attractive males or neutral landscapes both at peak and low fertility conditions. The results showed an interaction between women's fertility status and image type, such that women at peak fertility viewing images of attractive men chose the smaller, sooner monetary reward option less than women at peak fertility viewing neutral images. Neither fertility status nor image type influenced risky choice. Thus, though exposure to images of men altered intertemporal choices at peak fertility, this occurred in the opposite direction than predicted—i.e., women at peak fertility became less impulsive. Nevertheless, the results of the current study provide evidence for shifts in preferences over the ovulatory cycle and opens future research on economic decision making.

Different species vary in their ability to wait for delayed rewards in intertemporal choice tasks. Models of rate maximization account for part of this variation, but other factors such as social structure and feeding ecology seem to underly some species differences. Though studies have evaluated intertemporal choice in several primate species, including Old World monkeys, New World monkeys, and apes, prosimians have not been tested. This study investigated intertemporal choices in three species of lemur (black-and-white ruffed lemurs, Varecia variegata, red ruffed lemurs, Varecia rubra, and black lemurs, Eulemur macaco) to assess how they compare to other primate species and whether their choices are consistent with rate maximization. We offered lemurs a choice between two food items available immediately and six food items available after a delay. We found that by adjusting the delay to the larger reward, the lemurs were indifferent between the two options at a mean delay of 17 s, ranging from 9-25 s. These data are comparable to data collected from common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). The lemur data were not consistent with models of rate maximization. The addition of lemurs to the list of species tested in these tasks will help uncover the role of life history and socio-ecological factors influencing intertemporal choices.
