Data from: Invasion timing affects multiple scales, metrics and facets of biodiversity outcomes in ecological restoration experiments (Missouri, 2009-2016)

Vegetation responses to experimental ecological restoration treatments at Tyson Research Centre of Washington University in Missouri, USA. These data include species-level cover responses to various factorial restoration treatments. Treatments were applied starting in 2009 and were measured in 2016. Treatment responses reflect these long term responses, but the dataset is comprised to one time point.

Throw trap and electrofishing data collected during 1996–2022 from the Everglades, Florida, United States for the publication "Hydrology-mediated ecological function of a large wetland threatened by an invasive predator"

Asian swamp eels (Monopterus albus/javanensis complex) were first reported from Florida in 1997 and the Everglades in 2007; swamp eels have been established in Taylor Slough of Everglades National Park since 2014. This dataset incorporates plot-level mean densities (# of individuals per square meter) of common aquatic animals collected during 1996–2022 from 24 sites across four regions of the Everglades: Taylor Slough, Shark River Slough, Water Conservation Area 3, and the C-111 Panhandle. Prey species included are the six most common small fishes prior to swamp eel invasion of Taylor Slough (1996–2009) and the three common decapod species (two crayfish species and grass shrimp). An annual index of mean wet season electrofishing catch-per-unit-effort of swamp eels, Mayan cichlids (Mayaheros uruphthalmus), and the three other large 'top predator' fishes (Amia calva, Lepisosteus platyrhincus, Micropterus salmoides) is included for plots where electrofishing was performed from 1997-2021. Hydrologic measures used in analyses are included.

Data from: Species distribution models of the Spotted Wing Drosophila (Drosophila suzukii, Diptera: Drosophilidae) in its native and invasive range reveal an ecological niche shift

<p>The Spotted Wing Drosophila (<em>Drosophila</em> <em>suzukii</em>) is native to Southeast Asia. Since its first detection in 2008 in Europe and North America, it has been a pest to the fruit production industry as it feeds and oviposits on ripening fruit. Here we aim to model the potential geographical distribution of <em>D. suzukii</em>. We performed an extensive literature review to map the current records. In total, 517 documented occurrences (96 native and 421 invasive) were identified spanning 52 countries. Next, we constructed three species distribution models (SDMs) based on occurrence records in: 1) the native range (SDMnative), 2) the invasive range in Europe (SDMEurope) and 3) a global model of all records (SDMglobal). The models aimed to investigate, whether this species will be able to occupy additional ecological niches beyond its native range and expand its current geographic distribution both globally and in Europe. The SDMs were generated using Maximum Entropy algorithms (Maxent) based on present occurrence records and bioclimatic variables (WorldClim). Predictions of habitat suitability vary greatly depending on the origins of occurrence records. According to all models, precipitation and low temperatures were key limiting factors for the distribution of <em>D. suzukii</em>, which suggests that this species requires a humid environment with mild winters in order to establish a permanent population in its invasive range. Several regions in the invasive range, not presently occupied by this species, were predicted highly suitable, especially in northern Europe, suggesting that <em>D. suzukii</em> is not occupying its full fundamental niche yet. Synthesis and applications. Based on these models of potential geographic distribution of the Spotted Wing Drosophila (<em>Drosophila</em> <em>suzukii</em>), we show a shift in the ecological niche in <em>D. suzukii</em> populations, emphasizing the importance of using presence and local environmental data. Further investigation regarding new occurrences is recommended to secure optimal pest management. Despite a continuing expansion, many countries still lack proper surveillance schemes, and we urge policymakers to initiate appropriate management programs.</p>

Data from: A multifaceted ecological assessment reveals the invasion of the freshwater red macroalga Montagnia macrospora (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) in Taiwan

<p>Invasive freshwater macroalgae are rarely described. <em>Montagnia macrospora</em> is a freshwater red alga introduced from South America to East Asia via the global aquarium trade. The earliest occurrence record of this alga in Taiwan is dated 2005. To determine whether <em>M. macrospora </em>has become invasive in Taiwan and to understand the traits that facilitated its invasion, we took a multifaceted approach that combines examination of ecological background and population genetic analysis. Our island-wide survey showed that <em>M. macrospora</em> is widespread in the field across Taiwan, where the climate greatly differs from that of South America, and can self-sustain for nearly a decade. Our population genetic analysis revealed a lack of genetic diversity of <em>M. macrospora</em> in Taiwan, consistent with the hypothesis that the alga expanded through asexual reproduction. Moreover, during our long-term ecological assessments and field surveys, we observed that<em>M. macrospora</em> is an ecological generalist that can survive in a wide range of temperature, pH, illumination, and nutrient enrichment. Taken together, our data suggest that <em>M. macrospora</em> has successfully invaded the freshwater ecosystems ofTaiwan, likely due to its ability to disperse asexually and to grow under broad environmental conditions. We hope that our study brings attention to invasive freshwater algae, which have been overlooked in conservation planning and management.</p>
