Statistical analysis and dataset for: Invasive ant learning is not affected by seven potential neuroactive chemicals

<p>Linked to the journal article&nbsp;published in Current Zoology (<a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/cz/zoad001">https://doi.org/10.1093/cz/zoad001</a>).</p> <p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Argentine ants (<em>Linepithema humile</em>) are one of the most damaging invasive alien species worldwide. Enhancing or disrupting cognitive abilities, such as learning, has the potential to improve management efforts, for example by increasing preference for a bait, or improving ants&rsquo; ability to learn its characteristics or location. Nectar-feeding insects are often the victims of psychoactive manipulation, with plants lacing their nectar with secondary metabolites such as alkaloids and non-protein amino acids which often alter learning, foraging, or recruitment. However, the effect of neuroactive chemicals has seldomly been explored in ants. Here, we test the effects of seven potential neuroactive chemicals - two alkaloids: caffeine and nicotine; two biogenic amines: dopamine and octopamine, and three non-protein amino acids: &beta;-alanine, GABA and taurine - on the cognitive abilities of invasive&nbsp;<em>L. humile</em>&nbsp;using bifurcation mazes. Our results confirm that these ants are strong associative learners, requiring as little as one experience to develop an association. However, we show no short-term effect of any of the chemicals tested on spatial learning, and in addition no effect of caffeine on short-term olfactory learning. This lack of effect is surprising, given the extensive reports of the tested chemicals affecting learning and foraging in bees. This mismatch could be due to the heavy bias towards bees in the literature, a positive result&nbsp;publication bias, or differences in methodology.</p>

Differences in dogs' event related potentials in response to human and dog vocal stimuli: A non-invasive study

<p>Recent advances in the field of canine neuro-cognition allow for the non-invasive research of brain mechanisms in family dogs. Considering the striking similarities between dog's and human (infant)'s socio-cognition at the behavioural level, both similarities and differences in neural background can be of particular relevance. The current study investigates brain responses of N=17 family dogs to human and conspecific emotional vocalisations using a fully non-invasive ERP paradigm. We found that similarly to humans, dogs show a differential ERP response depending on the species of the caller demonstrated by a more positive ERP response to human vocalisations compared to dog vocalisations in a time-window between 250-650 ms after stimulus onset. A later time-window between 800-900 ms also revealed a valence sensitive ERP response in interaction with the species of the caller. Our results are the first ERP evidence to show the species sensitivity of vocal neural processing in dogs along with indications of valence sensitive processes in later post-stimulus time-periods.</p>

Potential distribution of invasive boxwood blight pathogen (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) as predicted by process-based and correlative models

<p>R project, R scripts, and data files for reproducing most of the analyses presented in a climatic suitability study for boxwood blight. The README. md file describes how to run the scripts and provides details on data inputs.</p> <p><strong>Abstract: </strong>Boxwood blight caused by <em>Cps</em> is an emerging disease that has had devastating impacts on <em>Buxus</em> spp. in the horticultural sector, landscapes, and native ecosystems. In this study, we produced a process-based climatic suitability model in the CLIMEX program and combined outputs of four different correlative modeling algorithms to generate an ensemble correlative model. All models were fit and validated using a presence record dataset comprised of <em>Cps</em> detections across its entire known invaded range. Evaluations of model performance provided validation of good model fit for all models. A consensus map of CLIMEX and ensemble correlative model predictions indicated that not-yet-invaded areas in eastern and southern Europe and in the southeastern, midwestern, and Pacific coast regions of North America are climatically suitable for <em>Cps</em> establishment. Most regions of the world where<em> Buxus</em> and its congeners are native are also at risk of establishment. These findings provide the first insights into <em>Cps</em> global invasion threat, suggesting that this invasive pathogen has the potential to significantly expand its range.</p>

Potential local adaptation in populations of invasive reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) across an urbanization gradient

<p>Urban stressors represent strong selective gradients that can elicit evolutionary change, especially in non-native species that may harbor substantial within-population variability. To test whether urban stressors drive phenotypic differentiation and influence local adaptation, we compared stress responses of populations of a ubiquitous invader, reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea). Specifically, we quantified responses to salt, copper, and zinc additions by reed canary grass collected from four populations spanning an urbanization gradient (natural, rural, moderate urban and intense urban). We measured ten phenotypic traits and trait plasticities, because reed canary grass is known to be highly plastic and because plasticity may enhance invasion success. We tested the following hypotheses: 1) source populations vary systematically in their stress response, with the intense urban population least sensitive and the natural population most sensitive, and 2) plastic responses are adaptive under stressful conditions. We found clear trait variation among populations, with the greatest divergence in traits and trait plasticities between the natural and intense urban populations. The intense urban population showed stress tolerator characteristics for resource acquisition traits including leaf dry matter content and specific root length. Trait plasticity varied among populations for over half the traits measured, highlighting that plasticity differences were as common as trait differences. Plasticity in root mass ratio and specific root length were adaptive in some contexts, suggesting that natural selection by anthropogenic stressors may have contributed to root trait differences. Reed canary grass populations in highly urbanized wetlands may therefore be evolving enhanced tolerance to urban stressors, suggesting a mechanism by which invasive species may proliferate across urban wetland systems generally.</p>
