Absorbed soil nutrients on ion exchange membranes in the reciprocal transplant gardens at Toolik Lake, Coldfoot, and Sagwon in 2016

Transplant gardens at Toolik Lake and Sagwon were established in 2014. At each location, 60 tussocks each from ecotypes of Eriophorum vaginatum from Coldfoot (CF, 67°15′32″N, 150°10′12″W), Toolik Lake (TL, 68°37′44″N, 149°35′0″W), and Sagwon (SG, 69°25′26″N, 148°42′49″W) were transplanted. At the reciprocal transplant gardens, ion exchange membranes were used to measure nutrient availability over two time periods: Early season (June) and mid season (July). Membranes were deployed in the field for either 20 or 21 days, depending on travel constraints.

Ion exchange membrane measure of nutrient availability of the 2015 experimental burn at Toolik Lake Field Station, Alaska 2016

An experimental burn conducted in the summer of 2015 to provide sites for an experiment whether seeds of Eriophorum vaginatum from different ecotypes could establish in recently burned areas. It consisted of ten 2 meter X 2 meter plots along with a similar number of control plots. There was little seedling establishment but other data were collected on the plots. Ion exchange membranes were used to measure nutrient availability over two time periods: Early season (June) and mid season (July).

A dataset on ion-exchange membrane fouling by humic acid during electrodialysis

<p>This dataset decribes the effect of process setting on the fouling of an electrodialysis pilot installation treating a sodium chloride solution in the presence of humic acid in a series of 22 experiments. The electrical resistance over the electrodialysis stack was monitored in time while varying the crossflow velocity in the compartments, the current applied and the salt concentration in the processed. The active cycle was maintained for a maximum of 1.5h after which the polarity was reversed to remove the fouling layer. In the pilot, additional data is included such as the temperature, pH, flow rate, conductivity, pressure in the different compartments of the ED stack.</p>

Nitrogen Deposition to an Alberta Bog as Measured with Mixed-bed Ion Exchange Resin Tube Collectors, 2011-2015

Development of the oil sands has led to increasing atmospheric N deposition, with values as high as 17 kg N ha-1 yr-1; regional background levels <2 kg N ha-1 yr-1. Bogs, being ombrotrophic, may be especially susceptible to increasing N deposition. To examine responses to N deposition, over five years, we experimentally applied N (as NH4NO3) to a bog near Mariana Lakes, Alberta, at rates of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 kg N ha-1 yr-1, plus controls (no water or N addition). Resin tubes filled with mixed-bed ion exchange resin were swapped in and out at each collection/deployment date (mid-May and mid-October of each year). Upon collection, resins were extracted with 1M KI and analyzed for inorganic N concentrations. Deposition of NH4 +-N, NO3 --N, and DIN averaged 187 ± 11, 237 ± 13, and 426 ± 19 μg m-2 da-1, corresponding to 0.68 ± 0.04, 0.87 ± 0.05, and 1.55 ± 0.07 kg N ha-1 yr-1, with no significant differences between open and throughfall collectors for any of the three measured parameters (p >= 0.63). Deposition of NH4 +-N was significantly higher during the growing season (averaging 240 μg m-2 da-1) than during the winter months (averaging 121 μg m-2 da-1) (p = 0.0004), while NO3 --N and DIN deposition did not differ significantly between winter and summer (p = 0.06 and 0.13, respectively).

Over all ion exchange resin tube collection dates, deposition of NH4+-N, NO3--N, and dissolved inorganic N (DIN; NH4+-N + NO3--N) averaged 240 ± 29, 318 ± 27, and 557 ± 41 µg m-2 da-1, values that are equivalent to 0.87 ± 0.10, 1.16 ± 0.10, and 2.03 ± 0.15 kg N ha-1 yr-1. While NH4+-N deposition was higher in the growing season than in non-growing season (p = 0.0006), NO3--N deposition was higher in non-growing season than during the growing season (p = 0.0052), with the net result being no seasonal difference in DIN deposition (p = 0.6428).

Integrating diffusion dialysis for sustainable acid recovery from ion exchange regeneration stages: Characterization of metal and non-metal ions migration

<p>Seawater mining presents a potential option for recovering the European Union&rsquo;s Critical Raw Materials (CRMs),&nbsp;but direct extraction from seawater is challenging due to their low concentrations, as most of them are Trace Elements (TEs) (at levels of mg/L or &mu;g/L). Saltworks <em>bitterns </em>(ultraconcentrated brines resulting from the sea salt&nbsp;production process) offer an alternative solution, naturally concentrated up to 40 times more than seawater. These bitterns can be further processed with chelating Ion Exchange (IX) sorbents to selectively extract TEs.&nbsp;However, this process requires an acidic elution stage with strong acids, followed by neutralization, to recover&nbsp;TEs through precipitation, demanding extensive chemicals consumption. Diffusion Dialysis (DD) could be used to&nbsp;recover the excess acid without external reagents, using an acid-resistant Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM).&nbsp;This study evaluates DD through batch and once-through tests for acid recovery from simulated IX eluate&nbsp;generated in the elution stage of TEs (B, Ga, Ge, Co, Sr) recovery from saltworks bitterns.<br>Batch tests achieved high recoveries for HCl (45&ndash;50 %) and H2SO4 (30&ndash;37 %), being the theoretical maximum&nbsp;attainable recovery equal to 50 %. B and Ge only partially permeated through the membrane (82 % rejection) by&nbsp;a diffusion mechanism in their neutral form (H3BO3(aq), H4GeO4(aq)). Ga, Co and Sr, in cationic form, were&nbsp;highly rejected (&gt;96 %). Permeability followed the order Ga &lt; Sr &lt; Co ≪ Ge &lt; B, due to the relevant charge and&nbsp;size. HCl permeability correlated linearly with concentration, while H2SO4 was inversely proportional. Once-through&nbsp;tests showed higher acid (74 % HCl, 62 % H2SO4) and oxoacid (66 % H3BO3(aq), 52 % H4GeO4(aq))&nbsp;recovery at a low specific flow rate, or apparent flux, (0.38 L/(m^2&sdot;h)) due to increased residence time. Water to acid flow rate ratios did not affect species transport when an excess of water was guaranteed.&nbsp;Conversely, an influence was observed when the ratio was below 1, with a minimum at 0.18, where a very low&nbsp;passage of species was observed due to the reduced dilution volume of the dialysate solution (water). A 1D&nbsp;transport model, incorporating the solutes permeabilities determined experimentally, effectively described the&nbsp;system performance, especially for HCl and B, albeit slightly overestimating the other TEs&rsquo; transport.</p>

Data from: Dynamic pore structure evolution of the ion adsorbed rare earth ore during the ion exchange process

<p><span>During the leaching process of the ion adsorbed rare earth ore, the pore structure evolution of the ore body plays a vital role in the seepage of the leaching solution. To investigate the evolution of the pore structure during the leaching process, experiments have been carried out with remodeled rare earth ore samples based on physical characteristics of in-situ ores. The seepage rate difference between deionized water leaching solution and 2% NH<sub>4</sub>Cl leaching solution during the active leaching period are analyzed. The porosity and the dynamic pore size evolution of pore structures in the ore body are discussed. Results indicate that along with ion exchange between the rare earth ore and the leaching solution, the porosity of the sample remains constant and the pore structure shows a decreasing trend in the first part and an increasing trend in the second part. Specifically, during the ion exchange process, the number of minimal pores (0~5μm), small pores (5~10μm), and medium pores (10~25μm) increases significantly and the number of medium-large pores (25~60μm), large pores (60~120μm), and mega pores (&gt;120μm) decreases dramatically. Along with the completion of the ion exchange process, the evolution of porous structure shows an opposite trend. The mechanism study reveals that the evolution of pore structure is induced by the difference of ionic strength in the leaching solution during the ion exchange process, where the rare earth ore microparticles will be absorbed or desorbed on to the solid phase.</span></p>

Electrodialysis with Bipolar Membranes for the Generation of NaOH and HCl Solutions from Brines: An Inter-Laboratory Evaluation of Thin and Ultrathin Non-Woven Cloth-Based Ion-Exchange Membranes Tamara

<p>The SEArcularMINE project aims to recover critical raw materials (CRMs) from brines from saltworks, thus facing a CRM shortage within Europe. To promote a fully circular scheme, the project valorises concentrated brines using electrodialysis with bipolar membranes (EDBM) to generate the required amounts of reactants (i.e., acids and bases). Regarding the performances of new non-woven cloth ion-exchange membranes (Suez): (i) an ultra-thin non-woven polyester cloth and (ii) a thin polypropylene cloth acting as the support structures were assessed. Additionally, the anion layer includes a catalyst to promote the water dissociation reaction. The effect of current density (100, 200, and 300 Am&minus;2) on the performance of two combinations of membranes in an inter-laboratory exercise using 2 M NaCl was evaluated. According to statistical analysis ANOVA, there was an agreement on the results obtained in both laboratories. NaOH/HCl solutions up to 0.8 M were generated working at 300 A m&minus;2 using both combinations of membranes. Regarding the performance parameters, stack set-ups incorporating thin polypropylene membranes showed lower specific energy consumption (SEC) and higher specific productivity (SP) than ultra-thin polypropylene ones. Hence, for ultra-thin polypropylene membranes, SEC was reported to be between 2.18 and 1.69 kWh kg&minus;1<br>NaOH and SP between 974 and 314 kg m&minus;2 y&minus;1.<br><br></p>
