<p>This dataset contains the data collected during the SNSF BRIDGE GREENsPACK project (Grant no. 187223) in association with the recent publication entitled “Design optimization of a phase-change capacitive sensor for irreversible temperature threshold monitoring and its eco-friendly and wireless implementation”. This work aims to study the capacitive response of a resonating capacitive device coated with phase changing material (jojoba oil) as it melts when crossing its melting temperature. Several configuration were simulated with different electrode spacing, oil volume and encapsulation thickness and the induced changes in capacitance were tested experimentaly. An eco-friendly implementation of the optimized spiral resonating devices was tested wirelessly over a custom made near field antenna and the frequency of resonance was measured as the oil melted over the structure, irreversibly changing its resonance frequency. The data that was collected in the frame of this work is present in this repository. More information about the content of the dataset is present in the included README file.</p>

Irreversible habitat specialization does not constrain diversification in hypersaline water beetles
<p>Specialization to extreme environments is often considered an evolutionary dead-end, leading to irreversible adaptations and reduced evolvability. There is, however, mixed evidence of this macroevolutionary pattern, and limited data from speciose lineages. Here, we tested the effect of habitat specialization to hypersaline waters in the diversification rates of aquatic beetles of the genus <i><span>Ochthebius </span></i><span>(Coleoptera, Hydraenidae), using a molecular phylogeny with more than 50% of the 546 recognized species, including representatives of all subgenus and species groups but one. Phylogenies were built combining mitochondrial and nuclear genes, with the addition of 42 mitochondrial genomes. Using Bayesian methods of character reconstruction, we show that hypersaline tolerance is an irreversible ecological specialization that arose multiple times independently. Two lineages of </span><i><span>Ochthebius</span></i><span> experienced a significant increase in diversification rates, one of them inhabiting hypersaline waters, but there was no overall correlation with habitat or any significant decrease in diversification rates despite the irreversibility of the hypersaline tolerance.</span><span> Our study tested for the first time the impact of hypersaline habitat specialization on diversification rates, without support of being an evolutionary dead-end. On the contrary, multiple and ancient lineages fully adapted to these extreme osmotic conditions seem able to diversify over long evolutionary periods.</span></p>

Stable landings mask irreversible community reorganizations in an overexploited Mediterranean ecosystem
<p>1. Background. Cumulative human pressures can induce non-linear discontinuous dynamics in ecosystems, known as regime shifts. Regime shifts typically imply hysteresis, a lacking or delayed system response when pressures are reverted, which can frustrate restoration efforts.</p> <p>2. The goal of the study. Here we investigate whether the northern Adriatic Sea fish and macroinvertebrate community, depicted by commercial fishery landings, has undergone irreversible regime shifts over the last 40 years.</p> <p>3. What was done. We use a stochastic cusp model to show that, under the interactive effect of fishing and warming, the community reorganized through discontinuous changes.</p> <p>4. What was found. Part of the community has now reached a new stable state, implying that a recovery towards previous baselines might be impossible. Interestingly, total landings remained constant across decades, masking the low resilience of the community.</p> <p>5. The relevance. Our study reveals the importance of carefully assessing regime shifts and resilience in marine ecosystems and advocates for their inclusion into management.</p>

Increased pupal temperature has reversible effects on thermal performance and irreversible effects on immune system and fecundity in adult ladybirds
<p><span>The environmental conditions an organism encounters during development vary in their lasting impact on adult phenotypes</span><span>. </span><span>In the context of ongoing climate change, it is particularly relevant to understand how high developmental temperatures can impact adult traits, and whether these effects persist or diminish during adulthood. </span><span>Here, we assessed the effects of pupal temperature (17°C – normal temperature, 26°C – increased temperature, or 35°C – heat wave) on adult <em>Harmonia</em> <em>axyridis</em> thermal stress tolerance, immune function, starvation resistance, and fecundity. </span><span>Temperature during pupation significantly affected all investigated traits in fresh adults. Heat acclimation decreased adult haemocyte concentration, cold tolerance, and total egg production, and had a positive effect on heat tolerance and starvation resistance. The negative effects of heat acclimation on cold tolerance diminished after seven days. In contrast, heat acclimation had a lasting positive effect on adult heat tolerance. Our results provide a broad assessment of the effects of developmental thermal acclimation on <em>H</em>. <em>axyridis</em> adult phenotypes. The relative plasticity of several adult traits after thermal acclimation may be consequential for the future geographic distribution and local performance of various insect species.</span></p>
