Bird and forest communities in a northern Michigan jack pine stand before and after logging, 2013-2018

This package contains data associated with documentation of breeding-season bird communities in a dry, jack pine and mixed red pine-jack pine forest in Marquette Co., MI. In addition to repeated surveys, 2014-2018, of bird presence in a network of 45 study plots, the package includes vegetation data collected on the same plots 2013-2017. At initiation of the study, the stand was >100 years old and had experienced little or no active management. During the study period, stands were thinned to reduce fire risk, and most jack pine were cut; three plots fell in a control area with no logging. Bird communities and vegetation were sampled repeatedly before and after management activities. Subsequent to the study period, a managed burn affected much of the study area.

Response of northern populations of black spruce and jack pine to southward seed transfers: Implications for climate change

<p>A variety of responses to climate change have been reported for northern tree populations, primarily from tree-ring and satellite-based studies. Here we employ provenance data to examine growth and survival responses of northern populations (defined here as those occurring north of 52oN) of black spruce (<em>Picea mariana</em>) and Jack pine (<em>Pinus banksiana</em>) to southward seed transfers – a space for time substitution that affords insights into potential climate change responses by these important northern tree species. Based on previous work, we anticipated relatively flat response curves that peak at much warmer temperatures than those found at seed source origin. These expectations were generally met for growth-related responses, with peak growth associated with seed transfers to environments 2.2<sup>o</sup>C and 3.6<sup>o</sup>C warmer than seed source origin for black spruce and jack pine, respectively. These findings imply that northern tree populations harbor a significant amount of resilience to climate warming. However, survival responses told a different story, with both species exhibiting reduced survival rates when moved to warmer and drier environments.  Together with the growth-based results, these findings suggest that the warmer and drier conditions expected across much of northern Canada under climate change may reduce survival, but surviving trees may grow at a faster rate up until a certain magnitude of climate warming has been reached. We note that all relationships had high levels of unexplained variation, underlining the many factors that may influence provenance study outcomes and the challenges in predicting tree responses to climate change. Despite certain limitations, we feel that the provenance data employed here provide valuable insights into potential climate change outcomes for northern tree populations.</p>

Influence of soil type and vertical zonation on soil fungal communities associated with natural jack pine forests

<p>Natural jack pine forests established on sandy eskers and clayey soils represent a unique habitat in the boreal forest in northeastern Canada and are generally associated with well-differentiated soil horizons, but little is known regarding their soil fungal diversity and how soil type and vertical zonation would shape their communities. To address this question, we characterized soil fungal communities from litter, organic and mineral horizons in 18 natural jack pine forests in esker and clayey soils using ITS2 rDNA metabarcoding. Ectomycorrhizal fungi dominated the organic and mineral horizons in esker soils, while saprotrophic fungi were dominant in clayey soils. The dominance of ectomycorrhizal fungi coincided with higher C accumulation within the organic horizon in esker soils. The nutrient-poor and more acidic esker sites harbored less diverse ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic communities than clayey soils. Several stress-tolerant and melanin-rich fungal taxa were indicators of esker soils. However, fungal communities were more distinct between horizons than soil types and soil type effects differed along the soil profile. Our findings highlight the need to fill knowledge gaps in soil fungal diversity associated with jack pine forests and pave the way for adapted and multi-resource forest management in esker forest ecosystems considering their underground fungal specificities.</p>

BOREAS RSS-04 1994 Jack Pine Leaf Biochemistry and Modeled Spectra in the SSA

The BOREAS RSS-04 team focused its efforts on deriving estimates of LAI and leaf chlorophyll and nitrogen concentrations from remotely sensed data for input into the Forest BGC model. This data set contains measurements of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) needle biochemistry from the BOREAS SSA in July and August 1994. The data contain measurements of current and year-1 needle chlorophyll, nitrogen, lignin, cellulose, and water content for the OJP flux tower and nearby auxiliary sites. The data have been used to test a needle reflectance and transmittance model, LIBERTY (Dawson et al., in press). The source code for the model and modeled needle spectra for each of the sampled tower and auxiliary sites are provided as part of this data set. The LIBERTY model was developed and the predicted spectral data generated to parameterize a canopy reflectance model (North, 1996) for comparison with AVIRIS, POLDER, and PARABOLA data.

BOREAS RSS-04 1994 Southern Study Area Jack Pine LAI & FPAR Data

The RSS-04 team collected several data sets related to leaf, plant, and stand physical, optical, and chemical properties. This data set contains leaf area indices and FPAR measurements which were taken at the three conifer sites in the BOREAS SSA during August 1993 and at the jack pine tower flux and a subset of auxiliary sites during July and August 1994. The measurements were made with LAI-2000 and Ceptometer instruments. The measurements were taken for the purpose of model parameterization and to test empirical relationships that were hypothesized between biophysical parameters and remotely sensed data.
