Bird and forest communities in a northern Michigan jack pine stand before and after logging, 2013-2018

This package contains data associated with documentation of breeding-season bird communities in a dry, jack pine and mixed red pine-jack pine forest in Marquette Co., MI. In addition to repeated surveys, 2014-2018, of bird presence in a network of 45 study plots, the package includes vegetation data collected on the same plots 2013-2017. At initiation of the study, the stand was >100 years old and had experienced little or no active management. During the study period, stands were thinned to reduce fire risk, and most jack pine were cut; three plots fell in a control area with no logging. Bird communities and vegetation were sampled repeatedly before and after management activities. Subsequent to the study period, a managed burn affected much of the study area.

Black Jack Battlefield & Nature Park Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Inoculation Study, Wellsville, KS, 2021-2022

Black Jack Battlefield & Nature Park (Wellsville, Kansas, USA) has a rich history of Indigenous stewardship, civil war conflict, agriculture, and, most recently, a decades-old ecological restoration of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. To potentially aid this recovery, we tested the impact of inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi cultured from regional remnant prairies on the survival and growth of 12 native prairie plant species. We grew these plants for a few weeks in the greenhouse with either sterile or AM fungi-inoculated soil. We then planted these into 24 experimental blocks with a 1x1 m field plot for each treatment (48 plots total) containing all 12 plant species when possible. We then tracked the survival and growth of the plants two weeks, about five months, and about fifteen months after planting. Growth was measured as height at all timepoints, and leaf number was included for most species in the latest timepoint. We found impacts of inoculation and species identity on both the survival and growth of the plants.

Water quality and stage in Gibson Jack Creek, SE Idaho, March-October 2020

Diel dissolved organic matter (DOM) variation can be used to understand hydrological and biogeochemical controls on organic matter cycling. We collected high-frequency fluorescent DOM data, and additional high-frequency data that could be used to parse controls, including stage, specific conductivity, water and air temperature, dissolved oxygen, and light availability at three locations in a non-perennial reach in Gibson Jack Creek, in southeastern Idaho. Weekly grab samples were collected for water chemistry throughout the study period. Data were collected from March 2020 through October 2020.
