Pompeii - VI.6.1 Casa di Pansa - Latrine (R. 17)
The remains of this latrine were scanned as part of the 2022 Pompeii Water and Sanitation Project field school run by the University of Missouri. This is a textbook version of an ideal Pompeii style latrine, down a small hallway in the kitchen of the House of Pansa. A raised tile floor slopes down to a drain in the corner, while two pedestals would have functioned as supports for a wooden seat, now missing. The sloping floor would have allowed a bucket of water to be used to "flush" the contents of the latrine down the drain. Jumping up the sanitation ladder in rural Cambodia: the role of remittances and peer-to-peer pressure in adopting high quality latrines
<p>Between November 2018 and February 2019, qualitative data collection was conducted in 7 rural villages situated in the provinces of Kampung Speu and Kampung Cham in Cambodia. These villages are located approximately two to three hours away from Phnom Penh, the political and economic hub of Cambodia. The focus of this study was on these villages due to their involvement in the Cambodia Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Improvement Programme (CRSHIP), which was implemented by the Ministry of Rural Development and Plan International Cambodia from 2012 to 2016. The CRSHIP aimed to enhance access to improved sanitation facilities and promote proper hygiene practices among rural communities through various approaches such as Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), sanitation marketing, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) in schools, and behavior change communication campaigns.</p>

The medieval cities of Al-Andalus developed extensive regulations aimed at improving hygiene and thus preventing disease. Little by little, the existence of latrines inside the Islamic houses became general, something very rare in Christian medieval Europe. Islamic fortresses also had latrines. BACKGROUND: Information transfer in mammalian communication networks is often based on the deposition of excreta in latrines. Depending on the intended receiver(s), latrines are either formed at territorial boundaries (between-group communication) or in core areas of home ranges (within-group communication). The relative importance of both types of marking behavior should depend, amongst other factors, on population densities and social group sizes, which tend to differ between urban and rural wildlife populations. Our study is the first to assess (direct and indirect) anthropogenic influences on mammalian latrine-based communication networks along a rural-to-urban gradient in European rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) living in urban, suburban and rural areas in and around Frankfurt am Main (Germany). RESULTS: The proportion of latrines located in close proximity to the burrow was higher at rural study sites compared to urban and suburban ones. At rural sites, we found the largest latrines and highest latrine densities close to the burrow, suggesting that core marking prevailed. By contrast, latrine dimensions and densities increased with increasing distance from the burrow in urban and suburban populations, suggesting a higher importance of peripheral marking. CONCLUSIONS: Increased population densities, but smaller social group sizes in urban rabbit populations may lead to an increased importance of between-group communication and thus, favor peripheral over core marking. Our study provides novel insights into the manifold ways by which man-made habitat alterations along a rural-to-urban gradient directly and indirectly affect wildlife populations, including latrine-based communication networks.

<p><span>Self-care behaviours a</span><span>re actions</span><span> that help maintain good health and surroundings. For example, appropriate toileting, sleeping in the bed, and bathing and washing are among self-care behaviours in humans. Animals also perform similar self-care behaviours such as latrine, nesting, and self-grooming. Studies have shown that chronic stress disrupts nesting and self-grooming behaviours. However, the effect of chronic stress on latrine behaviour, preferential, repeated defecation at specific locations, has not yet been clarified. This study a</span><span>imed to investigate</span><span> t</span><span>he influence of </span><span>chronic corticosterone administration o</span><span>n </span><span>latrine and nesting behaviours in mice. The variation in defecation location was quantified as the degree of the latrine behaviour by using Shannon entropy. The nest quality was scored based on shape. The study showed that mice exposed to chronic corticosterone had scattered defecation sites and lower nest quality c</span><span>ompared to </span><span>the control group. Furthermore, results showed that more scattered defecation behaviour was associated with lower nest quality at an individual level. Additionally, the deterioration of these self-care behaviours was associated with depression-like behaviours </span><span>such as less open field activity and increased immobility time during the tail suspension test</span><span>.</span><span> These results suggest that chronic corticosterone deteriorates self-care behaviours such as latrine and nesting in mice. This dataset includes physiological and behavioural data of mice used in the present study.</span></p>

<p>To reduce open defecation, many implementers use the intervention strategies of Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS). But CLTS focuses on latrine construction and does not include latrine maintenance and repair damage or collapse. Some households rebuild their latrine while others return to open defecation. The reasons why are unknown. Using data from a cross-sectional survey, this article shows how physical, personal, and social context factors and psychosocial factors from the RANAS model are associated with CLTS participation, and how these factors connect to latrine rebuilding. In 2015, heavy rains hit the north of Mozambique and many latrines collapsed. Subsequently, 640 household interviews were conducted in the affected region. Logistic regression and mediation analyses reveal that latrine rebuilding depends on education, soil conditions, social cohesion, and a feeling of being safe from diarrhea, the perception that many other community members own a latrine, and high confidence in personal ability to repair or rebuild a broken latrine. The effect of CLTS is mediated through social and psychosocial factors. CLTS already targets most of the relevant factors, but can still be improved by including activities that would focus on other factors not yet sufficiently addressed.</p>
