Well-being at the Frontlines: Leadership Strategies for Building Up Strong Resources Among Emergency Responders: Online Supplement

This is the online supplement for a mixed-methods article on resource-oriented leadership in emergency organizations.

Abstract: Repeated exposure to extreme events and other demanding missions can erode protective resources among emergency responders, causing health problems that, in turn, jeopardize their readiness and performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this article examines how leaders of emergency responders can systematically maintain and even enhance their subordinates’ well-being. To identify effective leadership strategies, we conducted in-depth interviews with 25 fire chiefs, 25 platoon leaders, and 26 subordinates from the German fire services. Employing the critical incident technique, we explored leadership processes both during emergency situations and during interim phases (training, standby time, etc.). Person-oriented leadership (developing, group-serving, and caring behavior) was described as fostering various resource gains, while task-oriented leadership (directive and problem-solving behavior) was reported to mitigate resource threats. Moreover, the interviews underscore the importance of interim phases in enhancing well-being. A cross-sectional survey with firefighters and members of a technical relief organization (N = 459) supported the qualitative findings. We integrate our results into a framework that links leadership in emergency organizations to subordinates’ well-being and readiness in demanding work contexts. Moreover, we discuss the generalizability of our results to other high-risk work contexts.

The study was approved by the ethics committee of the Faculty of Psychology & Sports Science of [institution anonymized for review].

This online supplement includes

STUDY1_GermanFireServices.pdf: Description of the organizational differences between volunteer and professional firefighters in Germany

STUDY1_InterviewGuides.pdf: All interview guides used in Study 1 (English translations)

STUDY1_CI-summaries.pdf: Short summaries of all critical incidents collected in Study 1

STUDY1_AnalysisDetails.pdf: Supplementary material on the qualitative analysis of the interviews conducted in Study 1

STUDY2_Codebook.xlsx: a codebook describing all instructions and items of Study 2

rawData_Study2.csv: raw data of Study 2 (anonymised; the raw data contains only the information of persons who were included in the analysis and have agreed to it.)

STUDY2_AnalysisScript.R: An analysis script based on R

STUDY2_Supplemental-Analyses.pdf: supplemental analyses including comparisons between final sample and dropout, comparisons between subgroups, detailed descriptive analyses

Getting the Most Out of Every Training Day – A Diary Study on the Influence of Instructors on Self-Regulated Learning During Firefighter Leadership Courses

This is the online supplement for a diary study on self-regulated learning in firefighter leadership courses and how it is susceptible to instructor behavior.

Abstract: Leadership courses in the fire services are highly challenging, up to the point that they can seriously exhaust the trainees and hamper their self-regulated learning efforts (e.g., setting goals, focusing attention, seeking feedback). We theorize that experiences of failure or overload can curtail trainees’ available energy resources on subsequent training days, which in turn should affect trainees’ learning efforts. Given the central role of instructors in leadership courses, we hypothesize that supportive and humble instructor behaviors decrease experiences of failure and overload, and thus increase self-regulated learning. Moreover, we argue that supportive instructor behavior fosters the learning-promoting effect of high levels of energy resources among trainees, while humble instructor behavior mitigates hampering effects of low levels of resources. We conducted a preregistered diary study with 118 firefighters who participated in two-week leadership courses at a German fire academy. The participants completed short questionnaires before and after classes each day. Multilevel analyses confirmed that perceived daily supportive and humble instructor behavior predict trainees’ reports of daily self-regulated learning activity. Notably, this effect was independent of positive effects of trainees’ reported resources in the morning. However, supportive and humble behavior did not moderate the effect of energy resources. Our results suggest that instructors can elicit effective learning despite challenging training conditions. Furthermore, this study offers implications for leaders in the fire services who themselves often conduct trainings with their subordinates.

The study was approved by the ethics committee of the Faculty of Psychology & Sports Science of [institution anonymized for review] and pre-registered with Aspredicted.org (see https://aspredicted.org/DM2_78R).

This online supplement includes

a codebook describing all instructions and items

raw data (anonymised) and analysis script (Note: The raw data contains only the information of persons who were included in the analysis and have agreed to it.)

supplemental analyzes

Lecturer Performance: The Influence of Transformational Leadership Style, Work Environment, Compensation, and Institutional Transformation

This study aims to test and analyze the influence of transformational leadership style, work environment, compensation, and institutional transformation on the performance of lecturers at the Mandala Institute of Technology and Science. This study uses a quantitative approach. Data analysis uses descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis that describes a certain characteristic or feature of a phenomenon that occurs and makes conclusions or generalizations about the population based on sample data. The sample used was 48 lecturers at the Mandala Institute of Technology and Science. The results of the study indicate that compensation affects lecturer performance, while transformational leadership style, work environment, and institutional transformation do not affect lecturer performance. The implications of this study indicate that increasing compensation can significantly improve lecturer performance at the Mandala Institute of Technology and Science, so it is important for institutions to focus on fairer and more adequate compensation policies. Conversely, improvements in transformational leadership style, work environment, and institutional transformation need to be adjusted to the specific context and needs of lecturers in order to have a more significant impact on performance.

Cultivating Leadership and Team Management Skills for Business Success

In today's dynamic and competitive business landscape, effective leadership and proficient team management are fundamental pillars driving organizational success (Rahman, R. (2023). Leadership encompasses not only setting the vision and goals of an organization but also inspiring and empowering employees to achieve them (Rahman, R. (2023). Similarly, adept team management is crucial for harnessing the collective potential of individuals toward common objectives (Rahman, R. (2023). This introduction sets the stage for exploring the significance of honing leadership and team management capabilities in driving business success, drawing insights from scholarly literature on the subject.

In the face of rapid technological advancements, evolving consumer preferences, and global market dynamics, businesses must navigate increasingly complex challenges. Effective leadership serves as the guiding force that steers organizations through uncertainty and change, while adept team management ensures that resources are optimally utilized and diverse talents are leveraged for maximum impact (Rahman, R. (2023). Moreover, in an era where employee engagement and retention are critical for sustained growth, leadership that fosters a culture of trust, collaboration, and innovation is indispensable ( Donaldson, G. (2006).).

Pigeons use tree structures as the leadership structure for flocking

Collective behaviors leading to various fascinating movement patterns are believed to be the product of complex interplay among individuals. Previous studies have identified two types of leadership structures in pigeon flocks, i.e., hierarchical networks and reciprocal relationships. However, both of these leadership structures are predicated based on data analysis and lack substantial empirical evidence. Additionally, it is difficult to delineate a direct correspondence between leadership structures and trajectory data for pigeon flocks because birds cannot report their leadership structure. Herein, we demonstrated that pigeons adopt leadership relationships that can be characterized as tree structures. In a tree structure, each follower follows its only leader during collective flights, and the single top leader determines the entire flock's flight direction. In the present study, we performed experiments using student volunteers who could report leadership relationships. We identified a one-to-one correspondence between leadership structures and data characteristics and proposed a method for determining the leadership structure based on trajectory data. This strategy was used to analyze flight trajectory data from a pigeon flock and elucidate the pigeons' leadership relationships. The developed approach could effectively model the collective behavior of pigeon flocks, thus accurately replicating findings from previous experimental studies. The results of this study provide insights regarding the leadership structure in pigeon flocks and have implications for artificial collective systems, e.g., autonomous formation control of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles or unmanned surface vehicles.

Glucocorticoids of European bison in relation to their status: age, dominance, social centrality and leadership

Dataset for the paper "Glucocorticoids of European bison in relation to their status: age, dominance, social centrality and leadership"

Stress is the body's response to cope with the environment and generally better survive unless too much chronic stress persists. While some studies suggest that it would be more stressful to be the dominant individual of the group, others support the opposite hypothesis. Several variables can actually affect this relationship, or even cancel it. This study therefore aims to make the link between social status and the basal level of stress of 14 wild European bison (Bison bonasus, L. 1758) living together. We collected faeces and measured the faecal glucocorticoid metabolites (FGM). We showed that FGM is linked to different variables of social status of European bison, specifically age, dominance rank, eigenvector centrality but also to interactions between the variables. Preferential leaders in bison, i.e. the older and more dominant individuals which are more central ones, are less stressed compared to other group members. Measurement of such variables could thus be a valuable tool to follow and improve the conservation of species by collecting data on FGM and other social variables and adapt group composition or environmental conditions (e.g. supplement in food) according to the FGM concentration of herd individuals.

Leadership Styles in International Conflict Management. Action by the European Union Against Radicalization, Terrorism and Violent Extremism – Risks and Threats

The article focuses on the antecedents of the emergence and management of international conflicts related to radicalization and terrorism in a European context and the interaction between leader and team. The objective of the desk research is to examine the correlation between the leadership style and the team, the leadership competencies, and to develop strategies for conflict resolution and management. It is achieved by analysing the European approach to the prevention of radicalization, terrorism and violent extremism, and exploring their positive and negative effects on a specific individual or group. The focus is on the role of leadership styles and competences at different hierarchical levels in order to achieve results and find solutions to problems. This paper presents the desk research conducted on countering radicalization and extremism.
