Hydraulic Pathways in Leaves of Temperate Trees at Harvard Forest 2002

The transport of water, sugar and nutrients in trees is restricted to specific vascular pathways, and thus organs may be relatively isolated from one another (=sectored). Strongly sectored leaf-to-leaf pathways have been shown for the transport of sugar and signal molecules within a shoot, but not previously for water transport. The hydraulic sectoriality of leaf-to-leaf pathways was determined for current year shoots of six temperate deciduous tree species (three ring-porous: Castanea dentata, Fraxinus americana and Quercus rubra, and three diffuse-porous: Acer saccharum, Betula papyrifera and Liriodendron tulipifera). Hydraulic sectoriality was determined using dye staining and a hydraulic method. In the dye method, leaf blades were removed, and dye was forced into the most proximal petiole. For each petiole we counted the vascular traces shared with the proximal petiole. For other shoots, measurements were made of the leaf-area specific hydraulic conductivity for leaf-to-leaf pathways (kLL). In five of six species patterns of sectoriality reflected phyllotaxy; both the sharing of vascular bundles between leaves and kLL were higher for orthostichous than non-orthostichous leaf pairs. Species-differences in leaf-to-leaf sectoriality were determined as the proportional differences between non-orthostichous vs. orthostichous leaf pairs in their staining of shared vascular bundles and in their kLL; for the six species these two indices of sectoriality were strongly correlated (R2 = 0.94; P less than 0.001). Species varied 8-fold in their kLL-based sectoriality, and ring-porous species were more sectored than diffuse-porous species. Differential leaf-to-leaf sectoriality has implications for species-specific coordination of leaf gas exchange and water relations within a branch, especially during fluctuations in irradiance, water and nutrient availability.

Phenology of flowers and leaves following experimental warming in the initiation and maturation years for 7 understory boreal plants at the Bonanza Creek Long Term Ecological Research (BNZ LTER) site in Interior Alaska: 2017-2019

This dataset contains the results of experimental warming of flower and leaf buds for 7 understory boreal plants: Rhododendron groenlandicum, Rosa acicularis, Rubus chamaemorus, Shepherdia canadensis, Viburnum edule, Vaccinium uliginosum, and Vaccinium vitis-idaea. Plants in two cohorts were subjected to one of four treatments: warming in the initiation year (the year prior to flowering or leaf-out) only, warming in the maturation year (the year of flowering or leaf-out) only, warming in both years, or no warming (controls). The timing of flowering (both cohorts) and leaf-out (usually one cohort) was monitored. We also tracked developmental stages of the flower bud primordia using repeated desctructive sampling followed scanning electron microscopy throughout the initiation years. Environmental data associated with the plots, including air temperature throughout the summer, soil temperature and depth of ground thaw in late May, and canopy cover, are also reported.

Nutrient mineralization from green leaves in litterbags of three mesh sizes in the LUQ-LTER Canopy Trimming 2 Experiment

Hurricanes generate disturbances in forests that alter physicochemical characteristics of the habitat by opening the canopy and depositing fresh wood and leaves. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of simulated hurricane driven changes to nutrient fluxes from litter to soil immediately following canopy disturbance. This study used three complete replicated blocks with two canopy treatments, control and trim+debris. Measurements were made in three 5 x 5 m subplots within 20 x 20 m plots nested in the 30 x 30 m treatment areas. Anion and cation resin membranes were inserted into the fermentation layer at the litter-soil interface and retrieved after one week. The measurement intervals were 2-4 weeks before canopy trimming, 0-1, 1-2, 2-3 and 4-5 weeks after trimming. Nutrient mineralization differed significantly between control and trim+detritus. Total N and P fluxes occurred at 4-5 weeks after canopy trimming. Litter decomposition depends primarily on the interaction among climate, litter quality and biota, so consequently any change in habitat will result in changes in these factors. Our objectives were to evaluate the effects of hurricane driven changes to forests on green litter decomposition, invertebrate communities and nutrient mineralization. This study used three complete replicated blocks with two canopy treatments, control and trim+debris. Measurements were made in three 5 x 5 m subplots within 20 x 20 m plots nested in the 30 x 30 m treatment areas. Green leaves were enclosed in litterbags of three different mesh sizes in each subplot. Litterbags were retrieved after 21, 35, 84 and 168 days; decomposer fauna was extracted and identified, mineralized nutrients were measured using ion resin membranes, and weight loss was determined. Arthropod abundance differed significantly through time. Photosynthetic rates of leaves from reduced and enhanced precipitation treatments at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2007-2008

This data package contains photosynthetic rate data for leaves collected from mesquite shrubs and black grama grasses at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 2007-2008. The purpose of this study was to quantify ecophysiological performance of shrubs and grasses in the context of precipitation manipulations. One mesquite and one black grama leaf from each plot (n = 20 plots; 5 PPT treatments X 4 replicate plots/treatment) were measured 5 times beginning July 2007 and ending in August 2008. Plots were subjected to precipitation treatments consisting of +/-80%, +/-50%, and ambient/control. A subset of plots also had a nitrogen addition treatment. Leaves were excised from plants and immediately measured for photosynthetic rate under ideal conditions in a LiCor cuvette. This study has been completed.

Factors influencing decomposition of leaves for five plant species at El Verde

We evaluated the influences of leaf quality, climate and microsite on the decomposition of leaves of five tropical tree species. Single-species litterbags were used to determine weight loss during the first three months of decomposition in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. Significant differences were found in decomposition rates among leaf species (Inga fagifolia &lt; I. vera &lt; Manilkara bidentata &lt; C-roton poecilanthus &lt;&lt; Sapium laurocerasus), but only S. laurocerasus differed significantly from the other species. Lignin had a suggestive negative correlation with leaf decomposition while carbon content and the lignin:N ratio were significantly correlated with mass loss. Content of N, P, Ca, and polyphenol were not significantly correlated with mass loss, but several of the litter quality variables were correlated with each other. Leaf species decomposed faster under canopies of their source trees than in a common plot where the source species were absent. Decomposition in two species in the Euphorbiaceae, S. laurocerasus and C. poecilanthus, was significantly affected by microsite. Leaching losses during the first three weeks were greater under source trees than in the common plot, and may have been associated with differences in canopy structure and throughfall. Differences in detrital communities, however, could have contributed to the differences in decomposition between microsites. Leaves of all species decomposed significantly faster in the wet than in the dry period (P = 0.001) despite little climatic variation in this subtropical wet forest type. This suggests that decomposition of tropical leaf litter might be sensitive to microclimatic changes on the forest floor resulting from either global climate change, or from natural or anthropogenic disturbances that open the canopy. Acer pseudoplatanus pot experiment measuring data of single leaves in LandKlif project

<p><span>We cultivated 168 saplings of Acer pseudoplatanus of four Bavarian provenances under varying shading (two treatments: sun-exposed and shaded) and watering (three treatments: regular watering / drought period in summer / drought periods in spring and summer). The experiment took place in a half-open greenhouse between March and August 2021. For each sapling, we measured the increase in height and stem diameter, as well as specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf dry matter content (LDMC) of three leaves. This dataset contains measuring data of fresh/dry weight and area of each single leaf.</span></p> <p><span>LandKlif is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts within the Bavarian Climate Research Network (bayklif). &nbsp;Within the five year funding period of bayklif, five interdisciplinary senior research associations and five junior research groups are be financed with a total sum of 18 million Euro. LandKliF, as one of the five interdisciplinary senior research associations, addresses the effects of climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem services in semi-natural, agricultural and urban landscapes.</span></p>

Mass spectrometry Imaging dataset for the study on fungicide application to tomato leaves - I

<p>The dataset uploaded here is in association to a manuscript in press by Ajith et al. titled, "Visualizing active fungicide formulation mobility in tomato leaves with Desorption Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry Imaging". This dataset contains .imzML format files of Mass Spectrometry Imaging data along with the zipped .ibd files for a fungicide application study with a commerical Azoxystrobin formulation. Percent carbon and nitrogen of leaves from shoots harvested at three levels in the canopy from 19 plots dominated by S. pulchra and B. nana shrubs near LTER Shrub plots at Toolik Field Station, AK the summer of 2012.

The percent carbon and nitrogen from leaves of shoots harvested from 1m x 1m point frame plots the summer of 2012 at Toolik Lake, Alaska. were measured on a ThermoScientific 2000. For each point frame plot, six shoots were harvested from upper, middle, and low sections of the canopy. The photosynthetic capacity of each shoot was analyzed with a LiCor 6400 infra-red gas analyzer by being run through a light response and A/Ci curve. The area of the shoot as viewed from the stop of the LiCor opaque, confer chamber (&quot;silhouette area&quot;) as well as the area of each shoot organ type was measured. These data are published separately, though methods are described below.

Leaf miners (Acrocercops species) larvae performance on young leaves of Manilkara bidentata

Manilkara bidentata is attacked by a specialist leaf miner(Acrocercops sp.(microlepidoptera:gracillariidae). More than one larvae can be found per mine within a leaf. The purposes of this study is to determine the effect of group feeding for this species since larval density within a leaf vary from 1-14 larvae per mine (Angulo-Sandoval personal observation). This variation allows to determine the effect of larval density on the amount of leaf damage, larval survivorship and larval growth. Leaves with mines varied in area from 10 to 224 cm2 (mean = 85.7 cm2) and the number of larvae per leaf ranged from 1 to 14 (mean = 5.7 larvae/mine). There was no relation between the size of the leaf and the number of larvae found within the leaf. There was a relationship between the number of larvae in a blotch mine and amount of damaged tissue. Herbivory increases from approximately 10% for one larva per leaf to 50% in leaves with eight larvae. In leaves with more than eight larvae, herbivory decreased . There was an effect of initial larval density on percent larval survivorship.Survivorship was high (70%) in leaves with one to three larvae. In intermediate density (4-8 larvae per mine) 50% of larvae survived and in high densities (9 - 14 larvae per mine), only 22% survived. Even though there was a decrease in larvae number in high densities, the final number of larvae remained higher, compared with low or intermediate densities. A linear relationship was found between number of larvae present in the leaf and the time it took the larvae to complete their larval stage. Larvae in high density (&gt; 9 larvae per mine) tended to develop faster (3-8 days) than larvae in low densities (5 - 10 days). Larval size upon emergence ranged from 8 to 12 mm (mean= 9.27) but there was no effect of larval density on the final larval size. The total number of surviving larvae varied according to the initial larval number and was highest in mines with eight individuals of which on average 4.7 su
