Remote sensing of the light-obscuring smoke properties in real-scale fires using a photometric measurement method
<p>This data set complements the article <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10694-023-01470-z">https://doi.org/10.1007/s10694-023-01470-z</a>.</p> <p>The data set contains the raw image data of three representative experiments and the corresponding input configuration data files for the LEDSA simulations.</p> <p>The data set contains:</p> <p>- The processed LEDSA simulation data of all experiments, mainly consisting of the measured and normalized intensities of all LEDs and the computed extinction coefficients according to the applied layer discretization (ledsa_simulations.zip).</p> <p>- The recorded measurement data of all experiments from three MIREX devices (MIREX.zip).</p> <p>- An exemplary data set consisting of the LEDSA raw data as RAW image files from three representative experiments in shortened form, containing every third image (image_data_{...}.zip).</p> <p>- LEDSA Input and Config files for analysis and simulation of the provided exemplary image data (ledsa_simulations_short.zip).</p> <p>- Python scripts for reading and post-processing the LESDA simulation data (postprocessing_tools.zip)</p> <p>- Juptyter Lab Python scripts that have been used to create the plots in the associated paper (data_analysis.zip).</p> <p>- The figures from the associated paper (figures.zip).</p> <p>Notes</p> <p>In order to run the Python scripts in Juptyer Labs properly, the given directory structure must be maintained, resulting when all archives are unpacked on the same hierarchical level.</p> <p> </p> <p>The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Oxygen sensing with individual ZnO:Sb Micro-wires: Effects of temperature and light exposure on the sensitivity and stability
<p>Nanostructured ZnO has been widely investigated as a gas sensing material. Antimony is an important dopant for ZnO that catalyzes its surface reactivity and thus strengthens its gas sensing capability. However, there are little to no studies on the gas sensing of antimony-doped ZnO single wires. We fabricated and characterized ZnO/ZnO:Sb core/shell micro-wires and demonstrated that individual wires are sensitive to oxygen gas flow. Temperature and light illumination strongly affect the oxygen gas sensitivity and stability of these individual wires. It was found that these micro- and nano-wire oxygen sensors at 200˚C give the highest response to oxygen, yet a vanishingly small effect of light and temperature variations. The underlying physics and the interplay between these effects are discussed in terms of surface-adsorbed oxygen, oxygen vacancies and hydrogen doping.</p>
Data from: Light sensing by opsins and fungal ecology: NOP-1 modulates entry into sexual reproduction in response to environmental cues
Understanding the genetic basis of the switch from asexual to sexual lifestyles in response to sometimes rapid environmental changes is one of the major challenges in fungal ecology. Light appears to play a critical role in the asexual–sexual switch—but fungal genomes harbour diverse light sensors. Fungal opsins are homologous to bacterial green-light-sensory rhodopsins, and their organismal functions in fungi have not been well understood. Three of these opsin-like proteins were widely distributed across fungal genomes, but homologs of the Fusarium opsin-like protein CarO were present only in plant-associated fungi. Key amino acids, including potential retinal binding sites, functionally diverged on the phylogeny of opsins. This diversification of opsin-like proteins could be correlated with life history-associated differences among fungi in their expression and function during morphological development. In Neurospora crassa and related species, knockout of the opsin NOP-1 led to a phenotype in the regulation of the asexual–sexual switch, modulating response to both light and oxygen conditions. Sexual development commenced early in ∆nop-1 strains cultured in unsealed plates under constant blue and white light. Furthermore, comparative transcriptomics showed that the expression of nop-1 is light-dependent and that the ∆nop-1 strain abundantly expresses genes involved in oxidative stress response, genes enriched in NAD/NADP binding sites, genes with functions in proton transmembrane movement and catalase activity, and genes involved in the homeostasis of protons. Based on these observations, we contend that light and oxidative stress regulate the switch via light-responsive and ROS pathways in model fungus N. crassa and other fungi.
