Decomposition and lignin content of wooden dowels deployed in a saltmarsh for 3, 5, or 7 years at Goat Island, North Inlet, Georgetown SC, 2017-2024.

Wooden dowels were used to examine organic matter decomposition in saltmarsh soils. Dowels were inserted to a depth of 45cm in control and fertilized marsh plots. They were harvested after 3, 5 or 7 years and sectioned into 5-cm segments. Weight loss of the dowel segments was used to quantify the fate of labile organic matter, while change in lignin content was used to quantify the fate of refractory organic matter.

Dissolved Organic Carbon Stable Isotopes and Lignin Phenols from Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, January 2019 - ongoing

Estuarine and coastal waters are home to more than half of the world's population and provide many social and economic benefits to society. Additionally, these ecosystems are sites of intense carbon cycling and are under pressure from changing land uses and climate. DOM is functionally defined as the OM passed through a 0.7 µm borosilicate glass fiber filter (GF/F) and is primarily made up of viruses, bacteria, colloids, lignins, humic substances, organic acids, and other small organic compounds (Repeta, 2015). Approximately 50% of DOM is generally considered to be dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (Stedmon and Nelson, 2015). Thus, DOC can be used as a proxy for quantifying DOM. Whole water samples were collected monthly from three different transects representing marl-dominated (Taylor Slough), peat-dominated (Shark River Slough), and seagrass-dominated (Florida Bay) environments. The water was filtered using 0.7 µm porosity glass fiber filters, then acidified to pH 2 and stored at 4°C until processing occurred. DOC concentration and the stable isotope ratio of DOC (δ13C-DOC) was measured on an OI Analytical TOC analyzer coupled to an Agilent Delta V plus Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer using high-temperature combustion (Lalonde et al., 2014). Dissolved vanillyl (vanillin, acetovanillone, vanillin acid), syringyl (syringaldehyde, acetosyringone, syringic acid), cinnamyl (p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid), and 3,5-hydroxybenzoic acid lignin phenols were isolated from ~2 liters of 0.7 µm filtered, acidified (pH 2) water by solid phase extraction (SPE) using 1g PPL cartridges that were pre-conditioned using pH 2 water and methanol. SPE cartridges were extracted using methanol, then dried and redissolved in 2N NaOH. Cupric oxide oxidation and liquid-liquid ethyl acetate extraction were used to extract lignin oxidation products (Hedges and Ertel, 1982, modified by Goñi and Hedges, 1995; Louchouarn et al., 2000; Goñi and Montgomery, 2000; Benner and Kaiser, 2011). Lignin, litter, and soil carbon decomposition from soil samples collected from 20 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites in 2019

These data support the findings of a manuscript by Huang et al. (2023) published in Nature Communications (doi pending). We used incubations of soil and stable isotope measurements to measure lignin, litter, and SOC decomposition over an 18-month lab incubation and assessed their relationships with geochemical, microbial, N-related and climatic factors across 156 mineral soils collected from 20 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) sites, which span broad biophysical gradients (climate, soil, and vegetation type) across North America. The soils were collected in 2019. Lignin decomposition and biogeochemical variables were also measured in an approximately 12-month field incubation.

Respiration, isotope composition, and carbon source partitioning from incubations of soil amended with litter and isotope-labeled lignin

We incubated 10 forest soils (collected from sites across North America, including the Luquillo LTER/CZO) in the laboratory for over two years to quantify the decomposition of carbon derived from added litter and lignin, as well as from extant soil organic matter. Each soil was subjected to two substrate addition treatments: a) litter derived from a C4 grass precipitated with 13C-enriched lignin, or the same C4 grass litter was precipitated with natural-abundance lignin. The concentrations and delta13C composition of carbon dioxide produced from each soil were measured periodically over time and partitioned into sources (soil organic matter, litter, and added lignin) using isotope mixing models. The methods and results are described in detail by a manuscript in Ecology (Hall et al., 2020).

Biobased Structurally Compatible Polymer Blends Based on Lignin and Thermoplastic Elastomer Polyurethane as Carbon Fiber Precursors

<p>The production of carbon fibers based on lignin reduces the cost and the environmental impact associated with carbon fiber manufacturing. However, the melt processing of lignin as a carbon fiber precursor is challenging due to its brittleness and limited thermoplastic behavior. For this reason we produce biopolymer blends based on Alcell organosolv hardwood lignin, hydroxypropyl modified Kraft hardwood, and a thermoplastic elastomer polyurethane (TPU). Samples with TPU content greater than 30% showed excellent melt processability and carbonization yield (35% carbon yield for the samples containing 30% of TPU). The thermal properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, rheology and thermogravimetric analysis. Fourier infrared measurements were utilized to explain the lignin/TPU interactions which governed the thermal and rheological behavior of the blends. SEM analysis showed that the blends produce a homogeneous structure which was void free after carbonization. These structurally complementary biopolymeric blends should open up new avenues for lignin valorization and bring closer the realization of the production of carbon fibers from biosources.</p>

Bio‐derived Carbon Nanofibres from Lignin as High‐Performance Li‐Ion Anode Materials

<p>Development of cost‐effective and increasingly efficient sustainable materials for energy‐storage devices, such Li‐ion batteries, is of crucial future importance. Herein, the preparation of carbon nanofibres from biopolymer blends of lignin (byproduct from the paper and pulp industry) and polylactic acid (PLA) or a thermoplastic elastomeric polyurethane (TPU) is described. SEM analysis shows the evolving microstructural morphology after each processing step (electrospinning, stabilisation and carbonisation). Importantly, it is possible to tailor the nanofibre porosity by utilising miscibility/immiscibility rules between lignin and the polymer additive (PLA/TPU). PLA blends (immiscible) generate porous structures whereas miscible lignin/TPU blends are solid when carbonised. Electrodes produced from 50&thinsp;% PLA blends have capacity values of 611 mAh&thinsp;g&minus;1 after 500 charge/discharge cycles, the highest reported to date for sustainable electrodes for Li‐ion batteries. Thus, this work will promote the development of lignocellulose waste materials as high‐performance energy‐storage materials.</p>

Cambridge: Cambridge Open Engage; 2022.</p> <p>This dataset contains the results of optimizing the green AquaSolv Omni biorefinery concept using the Bayesian optimization code BOSS. The input data represents the experimental processing conditions for each sample, namely the reactor temperature and P-factor (reaction severity). For each sample, the lignin yield was measured and the number of &szlig;-O-4 linkages, ratio of syringyl and guaiacyl units, and total carbohydrate content were quantified using a 2D NMR HSQC method.&nbsp; The lignin yield is given in weight percent of the original biomass and the NMR-quantified moieties are measured in terms of number of units per 100 aromatic (Ar) units.</p> <p>The data found in this record comes in two different versions: one for the Combined Acquisitions (CA) and one for the Pure Acquisitions (PA) strategy described in [1]. For each strategy, there is one data file for the training data and one for the test data.</p> <p>For additional details on the experimental processing and Bayesian optimization, please refer to [1].</p>
