Litterfall, Biomass and Productivity in CRUI Land Use Project at Harvard Forest 1996-1997

Prior agricultural land use often plays an important role in the present condition of forests. This research was conducted to find any productivity differences among previously plowed, pastured, and woodlot sites. There are six sites, two from each of the land use types. With this research we wanted to estimate the productivity for each of the six stands and test the hypothesis that rates of annual aboveground biomass and annual litter fall in recovering forests would decline in the order woodlot - pastured - plowed. Twenty-five trees, of various diameters and species, were cored at each site. The cores were analyzed and the radial growth was calculated for the most recent 5 and 10 year intervals. Biomass increments were also calculated for the same time span using published allometric equations. Aboveground woody productivity was calculated for diameter classes within species and semi-log relationships of productivity per diameter were used to calculate the productivity of all trees in the stand that were not cored. Site-specific and species-specific equations were used. Litter fall was estimated by collecting litter from ten traps each in the six stands. Litter was sorted by species and reported on a dry matter basis. Red oaks and red maples were the major contributors of biomass and litter fall in all six of the stands, accounting for about seventy percent of the total aboveground biomass. Although woodlots had higher total biomass there was not a significant difference in productivity across the six sites. The range of productivity including both litter fall and aboveground woody production was from 7524-9014 Kg/ha. This fell into the range for temperate forests according to results published by the International Biological Program. Production per unit biomass was greater in the plowed stand and least in the woodlots.

Litterfall at Harvard Forest HEM and LPH Towers since 2002

We measure the dry mass and estimated carbon content of leaves and fine twigs that abscise each year. These data are used to quantify one component of annual net primary productivity (ANPP), an important measure of ecosystem productivity and carbon cycling. Leaf area index (LAI) can also be estimated from these data, if area-to-mass ratios are calculated for leaves of each species. This was done for 2002 and 2003 leaf litterfall at the Little Prospect Hill (LPH) site. The fraction of total leaf mass or estimated total leaf area that is formed by leaves of each species also shows the species composition of the forest canopy. If repeated over many years, these data can indicate whether the forest canopy species composition is changing over time.

Litterfall in Hemlock Removal Experiment at Harvard Forest since 2005

Hemlock decline in New England is caused by direct and indirect effects of invasion of the hemlock woolly adelgid. Direct damage from the insect is causing gradual mortality of hemlock, and widespread harvesting of hemlock in advance of mortality, in contrast, causes immediate mortality and removal of biomass from the site. Although both processes affect thousands of acres of forest annually we have only a limited understanding of their effects on forest ecosystem function and productivity and the nature of the subsequent forest community. We anticipate that harvesting will yield different consequences than gradual mortality from the insect. Therefore we designed an experiment to simulate these contrasting impacts, by logging or girdling hemlock stands. Results from the experimental treatments will be compared to the changes observed in forests that are being infested by the adelgid, and can also be included in integrated analyses of a suite of large experiments that form a core component of the Harvard Forest LTER program.

Litterfall in the Clearcut Site at Harvard Forest 2012

Clearcutting a forest ecosystem can result in a drastic reduction of the stand’s productivity. Despite the severity of this disturbance type, past studies have found that the productivity of young regenerating stands can quickly rebound, approaching that of mature undisturbed stands within a few years. One of the obvious reasons is increased leaf area with each year of recovery. However, a less obvious reason may be the variability in species composition and distribution during the natural regeneration process. The purpose of this study was to investigate to what extent the increase in GEP, observed during the first four years of recovery, in a naturally regenerating clearcut stand was due to 1) an overall expansion of leaf area, and 2) an increase in the canopy’s photosynthetic capacity stemming from either species compositional shifts or drift in physiological traits within species. We found that the multi-year rise in GEP following harvest was clearly attributed to the expansion of leaf area rather than a change in vegetation composition. Sizeable changes in relative abundance of species were masked by remarkably similar leaf physiological attributes for a range of vegetation types present in this early successional environment. Comparison of upscaled leaf-chamber to eddy-covariance-based light-response curves revealed broad consistency in both maximum photosynthetic capacity and quantum yield efficiency. The approaches presented here illustrate how chamber- and ecosystem-scale measurements of gas exchange can be blended with species-level leaf area data to draw conclusive inferences about changes in ecosystem processes over time in a highly dynamic environment.

Litterfall in Simulated Hurricane Experiment at Harvard Forest since 1989

The hurricane site contains two plots - the blowdown (treatment) and the control - TSB and TSC respectively. The control plot contains 12 baskets and the blowdown 13. Litter baskets were placed in both the blowdown and control plots in Sept 1989. TSB-13 was originally part of an AVIRIS overflight study and was not included in the data collections until 1990. The litterfall year begins approximately September 20 each year. Years are designated with the fall date, e.g., Sept 1989-Sept 1990 is the 1989 litter year. Litter was collected 2x/year (Nov and the following Sep) in 1989 and 1990 and 3x/year in all subsequent years (Nov, June and Sep). Baskets were removed from the blowdown plot in fall 1990 while the experimental manipulation was underway. Only control plot baskets were collected for the 1990-1991 litterfall year. Nov. 2005 and June 2006 are combined as early snow in Nov. 2005 precluded collection. Litter was not sorted by species in all years and in most cases only the Nov collections were sorted from 1989 through 1993, 2000 and 2006. In other years, a total unsorted litter weight for each basket was recorded. Unsorted litter is indicated as unsorted species type.

Litterfall data from creosote sites along the Jornada Basin LTER transect, 1985-1988

This dataset contains measurements of litterfall from creosote shrub communities along the Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I) transects in southern New Mexico, USA. These transects are located in a livestock exclosure established in 1982 in the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) and run from the middle of the College Playa up to the foot of Mt. Summerford (2.7 km in length). Prior to the exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Creosotebush litterfall was collected monthly from traps under ten shrubs in the creosote zones along the control and treatment transects. Oven-dry weights of leaves, stems, and seed fractions as well as total dry weight of monthly collections are recorded. This study is complete.

Mangrove Litterfall from the Shark River Slough and Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE), South Florida, USA, January 2001 - ongoing

Monthly litterfall data is being collected in two mangrove-dominated regions (Shark River and Taylor Slough) in South Florida. Three sites (SRS4, SRS5, SRS6) in the Shark River region and one site (TS/Ph8) in the Joe Bay area region were used to characterize patterns of litterfall production. At each mangrove site 10 litter baskets (0.5 x 0.5 m) were placed in two 20 x 20 m plots (five baskets per plot). Data have been collected since January 2001. Statistical analysis is being performed. Federer Chronosequence: Litterfall Biomass and Chemistry; 1993-1997, 2003-2006

The project reports the flux of biomass and nutrients in leaf litterfall in 14 stands (the “Federer Chronosequence”) of northern hardwood forests. These 14 stands are located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Monitoring occurred from August 1993 through summer 1997 and again from August 2003 through summer 2006. The litterfall year is defined as starting in August (when we first set out baskets) and ending in August of the following year, years are named by the fall (in which most litter falls). In some years, we have litter mass by basket (3 per transect): 1993, 1994, 1995, 2003, 2005. In other years, we have only transect means: 1996, 2004. Seasonal masses are provided for 2005. Litterfall was sorted by species in all years except for 2005. Twig mass is reported only for 2005. Litter chemistry was measured in fresh litter samples collected in the same stands from 1994 through 2004. Raw, unedited data sorted by season can be found in “Other Entities”, though note the substantial changes that occurred between these values and the processed values published in this dataset. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Fine Litterfall Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1992 - ongoing

Fine litterfall (leaves, twigs, fruits, seeds, etc.) is collected in Watershed 1, Watershed 5, the Throughfall plots and the Bear Brook Watershed reference forest, located to the west of Watershed 6, to quantify carbon and nutrient flux associated with this important pathway. These measurements have facilitated quantification of ice storm effects and species declines (paper birch, sugar maple). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Coarse Litterfall Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1996 - ongoing

Coarse litterfall (woody litter greater than 2 cm diameter) was collected from cleared plots in the same sites as fine litterfall to quantify total aboveground litterfall in the reference forest. These collections are for quantifying CWD inputs from live standing trees rather than all CWD inputs. Tree mortality and fall rates are used for dead tree inputs. All together these data are used to calculate aboveground production and forest carbon and nutrient budgets. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Tidal forest litterfall collection in eight traps deployed at GCE 11 on the Altamaha River in Southeast Georgia from October 2014 to October 2017

We established two 0.1-ha plots in the Site 11 tidal forest in December 2013. Eight litterfall traps (0.25 m2) were established within the 0.1-ha plots on September 24, 2014 to estimate annual productivity. Litterfall was collected monthly during the heaviest litterfall months (October, November, December) and quarterly the rest of the year from October 2014 until October 2017. Once collected, litterfall was dried for 48 hours at 60 C and then weighed to the nearest 0.01 g.

PGL01 Litterfall collection in riparian gallery forest at Konza Prairie

Litterfall is collected monthly (more frequently during peak litterfall in October and November) at permanent sampling sites in the mixed deciduous gallery forest located along the lower reaches of Kings Creek at the Konza Prairie Biological Station. Thirty litterfall traps, 50 x 50 cm (.25 m2) are located along the north fork of Kings Creek, and two are located on the south fork of Kings Creek. The north fork boxes are numbered 31 to 60 and the south fork boxes are numbered 1 and 2. Originally, the south fork also had boxes 3 to 30 but these samplers were terminated in 1993 due to repeated damage by bison. (Boxes 1 and 2 are located just outside the bison area.) Samples are sorted in the lab, and mass of wood, seeds, and foliage are recorded separately.

Canopy Trimming Experiment (CTE) Litterfall

This data set shows forest litter production and its response to the canopy trimming and debris addition or removal treatments. In addition, it shows patterns of interannual variation that can be related to environmental variables. In combination with data set 111 (MRCE Litterfall data), this is the long-term monitoring of leaf litter production at El Verde Research Area. The data reported here are for mass of litterfall pooled among collection baskets placed in the inner 20x20 m measurement plots collected at two-week intervals, beginning two years before the first treatments were applied. The litter mass data are reported for litter separated by plant parts. Litterfall contributes to mobilization of organic matter and nutrients from primary producers to soil. Patterns in litterfall production from 12 forested sites along an elevation gradient in Pico del Este

Canopy Trimming Experiment Litterfall Nutrients Data

Humid tropical forests have the highest rates of litterfall production globally, which fuels rapid nutrient recycling and high net ecosystem production. Severe storm events significantly alter patterns in litterfall mass and nutrient dynamics through a combination of canopy disturbance and litter deposition. In this study, we used a large-scale long-term manipulation experiment to explore the separate and combined effects of canopy trimming and litter deposition on litterfall rates and litter nutrient concentrations and content. The deposition of fine litter associated with the treatments was equivalent to more than two times the annual fine litterfall mass and nutrient content in control plots. Results showed that canopy trimming was the primary driver of changes in litterfall and associated nutrient cycling. Canopy trimming reduced litterfall mass by 14 Mg ha-1 over the 2.5 year post-trim period. Nutrient concentrations increased in some litter fractions following trimming, likely due to a combination of changes in the species and fractional composition of litterfall, and increased nutrient uptake from reduced competition for nutrients. Declines in litterfall mass, however, led to large reductions in litterfall nutrient content with a loss of 143 ± 22 kg N ha-1 and 7 ± 0.2 kg P ha-1 over the 2.5 year post-trim period. There were no significant effects of litter deposition on litterfall rates or nutrient content, contrary to results from some fertilizer experiments. Our results suggest that large pulsed inputs of nutrients associated with tropical storms are unlikely to increase litterfall production, and that canopy disturbance has large and lasting effects on carbon and nutrient cycling. Riparian and upland understory vegetation lifeforms and leaf-litterfall ordination analyses in the Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot

Riparian areas are proportionally a small component of the forested landscape, they are significant contributors to ecosystem process, terrestrial and aquatic linkages, plant community composition, as well to basal energy resources for aquatic fauna. We describe vegetation and leaf-litterfall composition in relation to past land use in riparian and upland locations in tropical wet forest, Luquillo Forest Dynamics Plot (LFDP), Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. Data collected from 2003 to 2005. Stratified sampling was conducted in riparian and upland areas of LFDP with high and low past land use.
