Biocomplexity at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Coordinated Field Studies: Riparian Littoral Sites 2001 - 2004

General descriptive data for sites sampled as part of the "cross-lake comparison" segment of the Biocomplexity Project (Landscape Context - Coordinated Field Studies). The goal of the study was to explore the links between terrestrial and aquatic systems across a gradient of residential development and lake landscape position. Specifically, this project attempted to relate the abundance of Coarse Wood in the littoral zone with abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic features of the adjacent shoreline. Sampling Frequency: each site sampled once Number of sites: 488 sites on 61 Vilas County lakes were sampled from 2001-2004 (approximately 15 different lakes each year; eight sites per lake).

Biocomplexity at North Temperate Lakes LTER; Coordinated Field Studies: Littoral Plots 2001 - 2009

In 2001 - 2004 the abundance of coarse wood and other aspects of the physical structure of the littoral zone were surveyed along transects that followed the 0.5 m depth contour at 488 sites in Vilas County. These data were collected as part of the "cross-lake comparison" segment of the Biocomplexity Project (Landscape Context - Coordinated Field Studies). The study explored the links between terrestrial and aquatic systems across a gradient of residential development and lake landscape position. Specifically, this project attempted to relate the abundance of Coarse Wood in the littoral zone with abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic features of the adjacent shoreline. Each of the 488 sites was a 50 m stretch of shoreline. The transects started and ended at the beginning and end of the site; the length of each transect, therefore, varied. Logs which were at least 150 cm in length were counted; more detailed descriptions were taken of logs at least 10 cm in diameter and 150 cm long. Information on littoral and shoreline substrate was also collected. Sampling Frequency: each site sampled once Number of sites: 488 sites on 61 Vilas County lakes were sampled from 2001-2004 (approximately 15 different lakes each year; eight sites per lake).

Biocomplexity at North Temperate Lakes LTER; Coordinated Field Studies: Littoral Macrophytes 2001 - 2004

The aquatic vegetation of 60 lakes selected for the "cross-lake comparison" segment of the Biocomplexity Project was surveyed during the month of August in years 2001 through 2004. The study lakes are located in Vilas County, Wisconsin and were chosen to represent a range of positions on gradients of both human development and landscape position. The purpose of the macrophyte portion of the "cross-lake comparison" study was to evaluate the roles of landscape position and human development in the presence and composition of macrophyte communities.

Littoral and Pelagic Water Temperatures and Light in Escanaba, McDermott, and Sparkling Lakes, Wisconsin USA 2023-2024

This dataset contains high-frequency temperature (°C) and light (lux) measurements from three north-temperate lakes collected during the summers of 2023 and 2024, as well as locations of sensors in each lake. HOBO (HOBO Pendant temp/light®, Onset Brands, MA) sensors recorded at hourly intervals. Measurements were collected at 0.5m and 1m depth in all lakes (McDermott, Escanaba, and Sparkling) and at select 3m sites in Sparkling Lake. Sampling included pelagic and littoral zones. Each lake contained two pelagic sites instrumented using subsurface buoys. The number of littoral sites varied by lake and year (see Methods). At littoral sites, macrophyte presence or absence was assessed weekly, with presence defined as macrophytes occupying more than 50% of the water column. In Sparkling Lake 3m littoral sites were paired, with sensors placed inside and outside macrophyte beds less than 10m apart. These data were used to quantify thermal habitat breadth (daily temperature range) and to compare estimates based on (1) pelagic-only measurements and (2) combined pelagic + littoral measurements, allowing evaluation of the littoral zone’s contribution to lake thermal assessments. The dataset also supports analyses of macrophyte effects on thermal habitat in littoral zones. Data collection presented in this data package represents a subset of the larger "Walleye Bright Spots" project data.

Time-series of shoreline change for the Klamath River Littoral Cell (California)

This repository contains 35 years of tidally-corrected shoreline change data at the Klamath River Littoral Cell in northern California. This dataset was used in Warrick et al. 2023, "A Large Sediment Accretion Wave Along a Northern California Littoral Cell", to investigate and track the movement of a large sediment wave.

CoastSat was used to map shoreline changes on Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 imagery between 1984 and 2022. The Coastsat toolbox is publicly available at https://github.com/kvos/CoastSat and described in Vos et al. 2019, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envsoft.2019.104528. The time-series of shoreline change were tidally-corrected along cross-shore transects using tide levels from a global tide model (FES2014) and a satellite-derived estimate of the beach slope (as described in Vos et al. 2020, "Beach slopes from satellite-derived shorelines", https://doi.org/10.1029/2020GL088365).

The data is located in the /shoreline_data folder and structured as follows:

The littoral cell is divided in 4 sections (kmt_01, kmt_02, kmt_03, kmt_04)

For each section there is a folder with 4 CSV files:

time_series_tidally_corrected.csv: this file contains the tidally-corrected time-series of shoreline change along each transect belonging to the site (e.g. kmt01-000, kmt01-001 etc). This is the final product used for coastal change analyses.

time_series_raw.csv: this file contains the raw time-series of shoreline change, which have not be tidally-corrected. Note that each image is taken at a different stage of the tide.

tide_levels_fes2014: this file contains the tide levels at the time of image acquisition extracted from FES2014 (global tide model publicly available on AVISO+).

transect_coordinates_and_beach_slopes.csv: this file contains the coordinates (in WGS84 lat/lon coordinates) as well as the estimated beach slope for each transect.

In addition, there are 3 geospatial layers (.GEOJSON) which contain important spatial information. All the geospatial layers are in EPSG:2163 - US National Atlas Equal Area:

Klamath_polygons.geojson: this layer contains the polygons that were used to run CoastSat for each section of the littoral cell.

Klamath_shorelines.geojson: this layer contains the sandy shorelines that were used to generate the cross-shore transects (also used as reference shorelines in CoastSat).

transects.geojson: this layer contains the cross-shore transects, which are spaced 100 m alongshore.

Finally, in the /animations folder, there is a clip showing the mapped shorelines on the satellite imagery.

Dataset from University of Idaho 2004, master's thesis [Littoral ecology of epilithic algae in the Rocky Reach Pool, Mid-Columbia River (Washington State) - The effects of reservoir fluctuations.]

(Abstract from thesis) Epilithic algae, water column physical/chemical properties, and sediments were examined in the impounded Mid-Columbia River including the Rocky Reach Reservoir. Primary objectives included determination of the effects reservoir drawdown has on epilithic algae and potential nutrient enrichment via sediment. Epilithic algae were analyzed by pigment concentration, gravimetrically, and species composition. Reservoir elevation fluctuated at higher rates at tailrace sites (0.41-0.25 m/hr) compared to the forebay site (0.06-0.08 m/hr). Littoral exposure times were also greater at tailrace sites (mean of 8 hrs compared to 0 hr at the forebay site). Mean epilithic algae monochromatic chlorophyll a over all sampling periods at mainstem sites was 76.7 ± 4.8 mg/m2 (95 % C.I.). Epilithic algae monochromatic chlorophyll a in the zone of water fluctuation (0-1 m) was less at Wells tailrace (38.8 mg/m2) compared to Rocky Reach forebay (141.3 mg/m2) during summer, 2000 and 2001. Mean epilithic biofilm ash-free oven-dry weight over all sampling periods at mainstem sites was 25.6 ± 1.5 g/m2 (95 % C.I.). Mean autotrophic index across all mainstem locations was 439 indicating a large heterotrophic component within the epilithic biofilms. Epilithic algae communities were dominated by diatoms (50.2 %) and cyanobacteria (35.9 %), with some green algae (13.8 %). Canonical correlation analysis indicated that temperature, depth, site, and the water elevation change rate were important controllers of epilithic algae chlorophyll pigments. Mean textural characteristics of dredged sediment were 51.1 % sand, 43.2 % silt, and 5.7 % clay. Mean organic matter content in this sediment was 4.1 %. The mean seston sedimentation rate across mainstem locations was 11.3 g m-2 d-1 and organic matter comprised 14.7 % of the material collected from the water column.
