Bibliography on liveness in live programming, live coding, and exploratory programming

This dataset primarily contains a BibTeX file containing literature on the experience of liveness in programming. In particular it compares the results on liveness found under the terms "live programming", "live coding", and "exploratory programming".

For interested readers, there is also a Smalltalk source file attached containing source code snippets used to generate some of the results of the accompanying publication in the Programming journal.

Data and code from: Reciprocity and interaction effectiveness in generalised mutualisms among free-living species

Mutualistic interactions among free-living species generally involve low-frequency interactions and highly asymmetric dependence among partners, yet our understanding of factors behind their emergence is still limited. Using individual-based interactions of a super-generalist fleshy-fruited plant with its frugivore assemblage, we estimated the Resource Provisioning Effectiveness (RPE) and Seed Dispersal Effectiveness (SDE) to assess the balance in the exchange of resources. Plants were highly dependent on a few frugivore species, while frugivores interacted with most individual plants, resulting in strong asymmetries of mutual dependence. Interaction effectiveness was mainly driven by interaction frequency. Despite highly asymmetric dependences, the strong reliance on quantity of fruit consumed determined high reciprocity in rewards between partners (i.e., higher energy provided by the plant, more seedlings recruited), which was not obscured by minor variations in the quality of animal or plant service. We anticipate reciprocity will emerge in low-intimacy mutualisms where the mutualistic outcome largely relies upon interaction frequency.

Live Coding YouTube - PAT showcase 2017 (Screen Recording)

This is a screen recording of the premiere performance Live Coding YouTube, presented at the Performing Arts and Technology annual showcase, March 2017, McIntosh Theatre, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The following is a blurb used for the program note.

Music listening has changed greatly with the emergence of music streaming services, such as Spotify or Youtube. However, did it inspire us to make new experimental music? Live Coding YouTube is a response to the anticipation of novel performance practices using streaming media. A live coder uses any available video from YouTube, a video streaming service, as source material to perform an improvised audiovisual piece. The challenge is to manipulate the emerging media that are streamed from a networked service given the limited functionality of the API provided. The piece finds parallels in early experimental music that manipulates magnetic tape and vinyl records. On the contrary, the audiovisual space that a musician can explore on the fly is practically infinite. The performance system is built entirely on a web browser and publicly available in the following address: https://livecodingyoutube.github.io/

Live coding with Adapt

Despite the enormous creative potential, most of the recent developments in live coding are based on the idea of the sequencer and the drum machine where events are associated to notes as discrete moments in a parametric space.

This performance challenges this convention by using the Adapt sound engine, in which modules defining sound processes combine themselves in a network of influences, creating evolving sound morphologies. In this way, the machine gains a degree of autonomy by listening to its own output and analyzing the current configuration of the routings between these modules. The performer continuously interacts with this evolving system, trying to manage its behavior over time by altering the structure while discovering new possibilities and configurations.

Collaborative Live Coding With Glicol Music Programming Language

Web Audio Conference 2021 - Online - July 5-7

https://webaudioconf2021.com/performance-c-1

Qichao Lan (University Of Oslo); Alexander Refsum Jensenius (University Of Oslo) Abstract: Glicol is a graph-oriented live coding language developed with Rust, WebAssembly and AudioWorklet. This language can run in its web-based IDE that supports collaborative coding. In this performance, we invite the participants from the Glicol workshop to join the performance virtually. Each performer will be given the opportunity to write at least one musical loop, and the first author will be in charge of when to execute the code. The music style will be improvised experimental/ambient techno. Intro music by Caucenus - soundcloud.com/caucenus
