CO2 and CH4 fluxes from living and standing dead trees in Howland Research Forest, Maine USA, 2024

Methane (CH4) is the second-largest contributor to human-induced climate change, with significant uncertainties in its terrestrial sources and sinks. Tree stems, both living and dead, play crucial roles in forest ecosystem CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) flux dynamics, yet much remains unknown regarding the environmental drivers of fluxes. We measured CH4 and CO2 fluxes from 51 living trees (Picea rubens, Tsuga canadensis, Acer rubrum) along an upland-to-wetland gradient at Howland Research Forest, a net annual sink of CH4, in Maine USA. We also measured CH4 and CO2 fluxes from six standing dead red spruce stems (snags). We measured fluxes every two weeks throughout the growing season (April to November 2024) and at three heights (for a subset of red spruce stems) to capture a range of environmental conditions.

A living catalogue of artificial intelligence datasets and benchmarks for medical decision making

<p>We provide&nbsp;a comprehensive curated catalogue of&nbsp;<strong>artificial intelligence datasets</strong> and <strong>benchmarks for medical decision making</strong>. At the time of first release (April 2021), the dataset contains more than 400&nbsp;biomedical and clinical datasets&nbsp;of which 252 are publicly available or available upon request.</p> <p>The dataset was compiled based on a systematic literature review covering both biomedical and computer science literature and&nbsp;grey literature data sources. Live Fuel Moisture Content Mapping in the Mediterranean Basin Using Random Forests and Combining MODIS Spectral and Thermal Data

<p>Live fuel moisture content (LFMC), defined as&nbsp;the mass of water in the foliage and small twigs relative to its total dry mass, is a key factor affecting fire potential and determining wildfire danger and activity. Fuel moisture&nbsp;is directly related to the amount of energy needed to evaporate water before ignition. Consequently, high moisture values reduce, or even inhibit, ignitability and subsequent fire spread.</p> <p>To cover the absence of a specific model to estimate LFMC for the Mediterranean Basin at the sub-continental scale, we built an empirical&nbsp;model&nbsp;based on Random Forests (LFMC<sub>RF</sub>) and combining&nbsp;MODIS spectral bands, vegetation indices, land surface temperature, and the day of year as predictors. The details on the modeling and&nbsp;validation methods, and&nbsp;the accuracy of the estimates&nbsp;are in the related publication <strong><a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/rs14133162">Cunill Camprub&iacute; et al., 2022</a></strong>.</p> <p>This dataset contains a collection of&nbsp;weekly&nbsp;LFMC maps&nbsp;from&nbsp;February 2000&nbsp;to December 2021. Respectable Standards of Living: The Alternative Lens of Maintenance Costs, Britain 1270-1860

<p>Data set and code book.&nbsp; Replication materials for paper accepted in Economic History Review, April 2024.</p> <p>Abstract&nbsp;</p> <p><span>This paper argues that in all societies there is considerable agreement about what goods and services are needed to provide a decent living, and that this standard can be measured by the expense involved in maintaining people of good standing.<span>&nbsp; </span><span>&nbsp;</span>Maintenance costs include two components of living costs that are neglected in conventional approaches.<span>&nbsp; </span>First, in contrast to the usual focus on a fixed basket of commodities, maintenance costs capture changes in the composition and quality of the goods required for a respectable lifestyle.<span>&nbsp; </span>Second, unlike the conventional accounting they include the costs of the household services required to turn the basket commodities into livings. Ignored in the conventional methodology, the inclusion of these costs represents a core innovation. More than 4600 observations, drawn mainly from primary sources, trace levels and trends in maintenance costs for Britain, 1270-1860. <span>&nbsp;</span>These can be compared with established cost of living indicators to offer a complementary perspective on real consumption that accommodates aspirational goods and the input of household labour.<span>&nbsp; </span>The struggle to support families at respectable standards emerges as driving industriousness and motivating prudence among a class that played a major role in economic development.<span>&nbsp; </span><span>&nbsp;</span></span></p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Between November 2021 and August 2022 , 6061 participants over 18 years old were visited in their households in two districts of Lesotho. Of these, data from those who were diagnosed with either hypertension or diabetes were further analysed and are documented here.</p>

Consumption rates of tethered live and dead pinfish and dried squid in mudflat and seagrass habitats in the Upper Laguna Madre in 2018.

These data were recorded during surveys of a tethering experiment conducted on June 7, 2018, during which 180 tethered prey were deployed in two habitat types (seagrass and mudflat) in the Upper Laguna Madre, Texas, USA (27.544006, -97.285912). In each habitat, the following prey types were deployed: squidpops (1 cm2 discs of dried squid (Duffy et al. 2015) attached to 5 cm tethers, n=50), live (n=20) and dead (n=20) pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides, 4 cm fork length, attached to 20 cm tethers) at midday in each habitat. The presence/absence of tethered prey on each stake was observed and recorded after 1 hour and 24 hours. The rate of decay (i.e., disappearance or consumption rate of tethered prey over time) was calculated as the slope of an exponential model fit to discrete observations of the presence/absence of tethered prey over time. Additional environmental variables (temperature, salinity) were also recorded at the site.

Alaska 2004 Burns: Counts of live and dead seedlings of lodgepole pine in a post-fire seeding experiment at 39 sites

This dataset contains counts of emerged seedlings of lodgepole pine from seeds sown in an experimental seeding study. The experiment started in 2005 at sites that burned in 2004 in interior Alaska. Records are from a set of 39 intensive study sites that were formerly dominated by black spruce along the Steese, Taylor, and Dalton highways. Seeds were sown in five 50 x 50 cm quadrats at each site in August 2005 and most emerged in early summer 2005. Seedling counts were measured for 6 years, in 2006, 2007 2008, and 2011. All pine seedlings were removed in 2011.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef Resilience: Live and Dead Pocillopora and Acropora Coral Colony Time Series from 2006 to 2011

These data describe the abundance, size structure, and morphologies of living and dead corals belonging to the genera Pocillopora and Acropora on the forereef (depth = 10 meters) in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Data were derived from a randomly chosen subset of photo quadrats associated with knb-lter-mcr.4. For each quadrat, individual coral colonies were identified to genus, scored as living or dead, and the total area of their footprint calculated. In addition, branch morphology was scored on a scale from 1 to 3, with 1 representing very tight spacing, and 3 representing open spacing among adjacent branches. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2018).
