Data for 'Local verses farfield control on South Pacific mode water variability'

The adjoint files contained in two .zip folders here are the output files of two adjoint sensitivity experiments in the South Pacific mode water formation regions, CENTRAL and EASTERN, using ECCOv4r4. The first set of outputs is for the sensitivity of the volume in the Central mode water pool to net heat flux. The folder CENTRAL.zip contains these files which are of the form ADJqnet_CENTRAL.XX.data/.meta, where XX is the timestep. The second set of outputs is for the sensitivity of the volume in the Eastern mode water pool to net heat flux. The folder EASTERN.zip contains these files which are of the form ADJqnet_EASTERN.XX.data/.meta, where XX is the timestep. Both sets of data contained here are the output/sensitivity files for 6 years at 14 day time steps.

The forward perturbation files contained in four .zip folders here are the output files of four separate forward perturbation experiments, using ECCOv4r4. The first set of outputs is for a forward perturbation experiment related to the Central mode water pool sensitivities, where the perturbation is set in an area of negative sensitivity and uses a negative perturbation in the folder C_ns_np.zip. The folder C_ns_np.zip contains these files which are of the form THETA_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, SALT_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, and MXLDEPTH_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, where XX is the times. The second set of outputs is for a forward perturbation experiment related to the Central mode water pool sensitivities, where the perturbation is set in an area of negative sensitivity and uses a positive perturbation in the folder C_ns_pp.zip. The folder C_ns_pp.zip contains these files which are of the form THETA_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, SALT_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, and MXLDEPTH_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, where XX is the times. The third set of outputs is for a forward perturbation experiment related to the Central mode water pool sensitivities, where the perturbation is set in an area of positive sensitivity and uses a negative perturbation in the folder C_ps_np.zip. The folder C_ps_np.zip contains these files which are of the form THETA_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, SALT_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, and MXLDEPTH_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, where XX is the times. The fourth set of outputs is for a forward perturbation experiment related to the Central mode water pool sensitivities, where the perturbation is set in an area of positive sensitivity and uses a positive perturbation in the folder C_ps_pp.zip. The folder C_ps_pp.zip contains these files which are of the form THETA_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, SALT_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, and MXLDEPTH_mon_mean.XX.data/.meta, where XX is the times. All sets of data contained here are the output/forward perturbation files for 3 years at 14 day time steps, starting when the perturbation begins. The THETA and SALT files from the forward perturbation experiments are used to create neutral density files using the gibbs seawater toolbox in MATLAB. These perturbed neutral densities are then used to find the difference the perturbation makes in relation to a control experiment.

Paper abstract: In the South Pacific mode water formation region, central and eastern pools of mode water have been found to be linked to winter mixed-layer thicknesses that vary strongly interannually and out of phase across the basin. This mixed-layer variability is associated with peaks in sea level pressure variability at a quasi-stationary anomaly situated between the two pools. To investigate how surface forcing, as well as the propagation of upstream anomalies, affects the formation of these mode water pools, a set of adjoint sensitivity experiments with a density-following feature are conducted. Adjoint sensitivities reveal local cooling can lead to an increase in mode water pool volume through mixed-layer depth changes and lateral density surface movement. In addition, upstream warming along the Antarctic Circumpolar Current can lead to an increase in mode water pool volume through lateral density surface movement. Optimal conditions for mode water formation involve a combination of local cooling and upstream warming of mode water formation sites. Hence, South Pacific mode water variability is particularly sensitive to atmospheric modes which lead to a dipole in heating across the formation sites.

MISR Level 1B2 Local Mode Terrain Radiance Data subset for the UAE region V002

UAEM1LMT_002 is the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) Level 1B2 Local Mode Terrain Radiance Data subset for the UAE region. It contains the terrain-projected TOA radiance for the single local mode scene, resampled at the surface and topographically corrected. The MISR instrument consists of nine push-broom cameras that measure radiance in four spectral bands. Global coverage is achieved in nine days. The cameras are arranged with one camera pointing toward the nadir, four forward, and four aftward. It takes seven minutes for all nine cameras to view the same surface location. The view angles relative to the surface reference ellipsoid are 0, 26.1, 45.6, 60.0, and 70.5 degrees. The spectral band shapes are nominally Gaussian, centered at 443, 555, 670, and 865 nm.MISR is designed to view Earth with cameras in 9 different directions. As the instrument flies overhead, all nine cameras successfully imaged each piece of Earth's surface below in 4 wavelengths (blue, green, red, and near-infrared). MISR aims to improve our understanding of the effects of sunlight on Earth and distinguish different types of clouds, particles, and surfaces. Specifically, MISR monitors the monthly, seasonal, and long-term trends in three areas: 1) amount and type of atmospheric particles (aerosols), including those formed by natural sources and by human activities; 2) amounts, types, and heights of clouds, and 3) distribution of land surface cover, including vegetation canopy structure.

MISR Level 1B2 Local Mode Terrain Radiance Data V002

MB2LMT_2 is the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) Level 1B2 Local Mode Terrain Radiance Data Version 2 product. It contains the terrain-projected Top-of-Atmosphere (TOA) radiance for the single local mode scene, resampled at the surface and topographically corrected. MISR itself is an instrument designed to view Earth with cameras pointed in 9 different directions. As the instrument flies overhead, each piece of Earth's surface below is successively imaged by all 9 cameras, in each of 4 wavelengths (blue, green, red, and near-infrared). The goal of MISR is to improve our understanding of the affects of sunlight on Earth, as well as distinguish different types of clouds, particles and surfaces. MISR Level 1B1 Local Mode Radiance Data V002

MIB1LM_002 is the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) Level 1B1 Local Mode Radiance Data version 2. It contains the data numbers (DNs) radiometrically scaled to radiances with no geometric resampling. Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) Level 1B1 Radiance data product contains spectral radiances for all MISR channels. Each value represents the incident radiance averaged over the sensor's total band response. Processing includes both radiance scaling and conditioning steps. Radiance scaling converts the Level 1A data from digital counts to radiances, using coefficients derived from the onboard calibrator (OBC) and vicarious calibrations. The OBC contains Spectralon calibration panels, deployed monthly and reflect sunlight into cameras. The OBC detector standards then measure this reflected light to provide the calibration. No out-of-band correction is done for this product, nor are the data geometrically corrected or resampled. Data collection for this product is ongoing.
