ScintPi: A low-cost, easy-to-build GPS ionospheric scintillation monitor for DASI studies of space weather, education, and citizen science initiatives

<p>These data sets contain ionospheric scintillation (GPS L1) observations (S4 indices) collected by a ScintPi prototype during 2018 at&nbsp;a low magnetic latitude station (Presidente Prudente).&nbsp;ScintPi is a low-cost, easy-to-build GPS ionospheric scintillation monitor for DASI studies of space weather, education, and citizen science initiatives.</p> <p>The file named &quot;ScintPi_PPR_S4_2018.mat&quot; contains&nbsp;S4 values (s4mat) for 2018 as a function of universal time (utmat), day-of-year (doymat),&nbsp;GPS satellite identifier number (prnmat), GPS satellite elevation (elmat) and azimuth (azmat)&nbsp;angles.</p> <p>The file named &quot;ScintPi_PPR_20180211.mat&quot; contains example raw (10 Hz) measurements made by ScintPi on February 11, 2018. The file&nbsp;contains values of receiver&#39;s altitude, latitude and longitude (variables alt,lat, and lon), GPS satellite azimuth and elevation (variables el and az), GPS identifier number (prn), signal-to-noise ratio (snr), and day-of-year (doy).</p>

Development, Education, and Implementation of a Low-Cost Audio Sensor-based Autonomous Surveillance System for Smart and Connected Transportation Infrastructure Construction and Maintenance

<p>Each DOT has to govern and oversee an enormous number of transportation construction and maintenance projects. However, since a transportation construction project entails several miles of a job site including numerous work tasks and equipment operations, it has been increasingly challenging for each DOT to consistently monitor progress of all projects in each State as well as efficiently evaluate work performance. In particular, with limited human resources and time, DOTs in Region 6 States have managed large-scale transportation construction and maintenance projects by a human inspection and recovered direct and indirect damages of transportation infrastructure systems caused from the recent natural disasters. In this demanding situation, DOT practitioners and project managers have long recognized the importance of automated monitoring and surveillance of transportation construction and maintenance processes that helps consistently track work progress and take immediate remedial action. As one promising supplement for site monitoring and human inspection, this project proposes a new approach for low-cost audio sensor-based autonomous site and safety surveillance of transportation construction and maintenance, which allows for faster, more convenient, and more accurate work zone monitoring. The proposed innovation using the sound-based site and safety monitoring framework possesses several competitive advantages over traditional site management and existing vision-based work monitoring methods, which not only sounds can be easily recognized and instantly analyzed by diverse sound sensors. In addition, this sound-based monitoring approach supports an unlimited range of monitoring angles and illumination levels with lightweight data processing and comparatively quick analytics. To achieve these goals, this study developed a low-cost wearable audio-sensor for automated work zone monitoring and real-time activity log generation. This new intelligent site and safety surveillance system is expected to support real-time monitoring of construction progress, evaluation of task performance, and rapid identification of safety issues in transportation construction and maintenance projects.</p>

Development, Training, Education, and Implementation of Low-Cost Sensing Technologies for Bridge Structural Health Monitoring (SHM)

<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17STUNM02. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;Transportation infrastructure needs continuous monitoring. However, traditional inspections cost money and are conducted visually. New technologies for bridge monitoring are expensive and complex. This project involved developing cost-effective sensor technologies that can be applied towards the maintenance of railroad bridges by recording reference-free transverse displacement. More specifically, this project developed new applications of new technologies (Arduino, wireless smart sensors, drones, Hololens) and promoted workforce development with an emphasis on outreach of high-school students. This project was carried out in three main phases: (1) development and validation of technologies, (2) education and outreach to students, and (3) outreach to industry consisting in one professional workshop. The findings from the first phase showed that the data gathered by these new low-cost sensing systems were comparable to the data collected using traditional sensors. Researchers collected the findings of the second phase of the project through surveys conducted from Middle school, High school and college students during and after outreach activities. these surveys showed that many of the participant students got more interested in the use of new technologies after getting familiar with them. Finally, researchers collected the findings of the third phase of the project through a workshop collecting the interest and challenges of the owners of railroad infrastructure. The top interest of railroad owners is to explore the use of new technologies to increase safety in the field. The conclusions of this research include prioritization on developing low-cost technologies that can measure simple parameters in the field of interest to existing inspectors.&quot;</p>

Cognitive development among children in a low-income setting: cost-effectiveness analysis of a maternal nutrition education intervention in rural Uganda

<p><span>Inadequate nutrition and insufficient stimulation in early childhood can lead to long-term deficits in cognitive and social development. Evidence for policy and decision-making regarding the cost of delivering nutrition education is lacking in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). In rural Uganda, we conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT) examining the effect of a maternal nutrition education intervention on developmental outcomes among children aged 6–8 months. This intervention led to significantly improved cognitive scores when the children reached the age of 20–24 months. When considering the potential for this intervention's future implementation, the desired effects should be weighed against the increased costs.</span><span> This study therefore aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of this education intervention compared with current practice.</span><span> Health outcome data were based on the RCT. Cost data were collected via interviews with researchers involved in processing the intervention. This study considered a healthcare provider perspective for an 18-month time horizon.</span><span> The control group was considered as the current practice for the future large-scale implementation of this intervention. </span><span>A cost-effectiveness analysis was performed, including calculations of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs). In addition, uncertainty in the results was characterized using one-way and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. The ICER for the education intervention compared with current practice was USD ($) 16.50 per cognitive composite score gained, with an incremental cost of </span><span>$265.79 and an incremental cognitive composite score of 16.11. The sensitivity analyses indicated the robustness of these results. The ICER was sensitive to changes in cognitive composite score and the cost of personnel, but the education intervention can be considered cost-effective compared with the current practice. The outcome of this study, including the cost analysis, health outcome, cost-effectiveness, and sensitivity analysis, can be useful to inform policymakers and stakeholders about effective resource allocation processes in Uganda and possibly other LMIC.</span></p>

Data from: Randomized study of the impact of a therapeutic education program on patients suffering from chronic low-back pain who are treated with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

Background: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is often used for the treatment of low-back pain (LBP). However, its effectiveness is controversial. Objective: To determine the efficacy of TENS in the treatment LBP when associated to a therapeutic education program (TEP). Design: Open randomized monocentric study. Setting: University hospital between 2010 and 2014. Patients: A total of 97 patients suffering from LBP. Interventions: Routine care (TENS group) or routine care plus a therapeutic education program (TENS-TEP group) based on consultation support by a pain resource nurse Main outcome measures: EIFEL and Dallas Pain Questionnaire scores. Results: Twenty-two patients (44%) were still assessable at the end-of-study visit, whereas 33 (70%) were assessable at the same time point in the TENS-TEP group (P = 0.013). The EIFEL score and the Dallas score had a similar evolution over time between groups (p = 0.18 and p = 0.50 respectively). Similarly, there were no significant differences between the groups with respect to resting pain scores (p = 0.94 for back pain and p = 0.16 for leg pain) and movement pain scores (p = 0.52 for back pain and p = 0.56 for leg pain). At Month 6, there was no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.85) with regard to analgesics and social impact. Two patients presented a serious adverse event during the study (one in each group) but non-attributable to the treatment studied. Conclusion: This study does not support the use of TENS in the treatment of patients with chronic LBP even though patients benefited from a therapeutic education program by a pain resource nurse. However, the higher number of premature withdrawals in the TENS group may be due to early withdrawal of patients who did not experience improvement of their symptoms.
