Macroinvertebrate trait, abundance and site quality data from the Green Lakes Valley, 2018

This research was conducted to get a sense of the current spatial distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates among various aquatic habitats throughout the Green Lakes Valley. Benthic macroinvertebrates are small organisms that lack a backbone (invertebrate), live on the bottom (benthic), and are visible with the naked eye (macro). To estimate the community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates communities, 53 benthic macroinvertebrate samples were collected over the summer of 2018 from three alpine lakes and two streams in the Green Lakes Valley, CO at multiple points throughout the season. Benthic macroinvertebrates were sampled from the shoreline, inlet (inflow of water), and outlet (outflow of water) of each sampled lake, alongside estimates for habitat quality like surrounding vegetation, temperature (C°), rock volume (L), nitrate (mg/L,) pH, and dissolved oxygen saturation. The methods from this survey are broadly consistent with historic surveys ranging from 1960 to 1987 that have also sought to characterize aquatic invertebrate community composition within the Green Lakes Valley (Bushnell et al. 1987 The Great Basin Naturalist).

Data from: Environmental filtering of macroinvertebrate traits influences ecosystem functioning in a large river floodplain

The Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function hypothesis postulates that higher biodiversity is correlated with faster ecosystem process rates and increased ecosystem stability in fluctuating environments. Exhibiting high spatio-temporal habitat diversity, floodplains are highly productive ecosystems, supporting communities that are naturally resilient and highly diverse.

We examined linkages among floodplain wetland habitats, invertebrate communities and their associated traits, and ecosystem function across 60 sites within the floodplain wetlands of the lower Wolastoq | Saint John River, New Brunswick, using structural equation modelling and Threshold Indicator Taxa ANalysis (TITAN2).

We identified key environmental filters structuring invertebrate communities, by linking increased niche differentiation through shoreline change, flood pulse dynamics, and macrophyte bed complexity with increased taxa and functional diversity.

Examination of traits linked to ecosystem functions revealed that more resilient wetlands with balance between primary productivity and decomposition as carbon sources were associated with greater functional evenness and richness, while habitat patches with elevated decomposition rates had lower functional richness, reflecting a simplified, more disturbed habitat.

While our more complex overarching SEM model was ultimately compromised by an overspecified number of pathways, our results nevertheless are indicative of a divergence between wetland and riverine ecosystems in their relationships linking biodiversity and ecosystem function, illustrating how to define ecosystem health in wetland habitats, and demonstrating how critical functions support healthy wetland habitats by providing increased resilience to disturbance.

Data for: A database of West European headwater macroinvertebrate stoichiometric traits

Motivation: Ecological stoichiometry investigates the equilibrium and the fluxes of chemical elements and energy between organisms and their environment. Several studies pointed out the value of integrating stoichiometric traits for a better understanding of the mechanisms behind community and ecosystem processes. Especially in the light of globally changing nutrient levels in freshwater systems, the link of stoichiometric traits to nutrient cycling and trophic interactions can improve our investigations of a species or community response to these changes. Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages are widely used for biomonitoring in freshwaters, providing a large number of data sets gathering information about their taxonomic diversity at many different spatial and temporal scales. Likewise, an increasing number of large databases gives ready access to information on a variety of macroinvertebrate biological traits. The addition of stoichiometric traits to this pool of available information could thus expand the application of trait approaches and facilitate the study of the links between nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning.
Main types of variables contained: The database contains information on elemental content of 188 taxa, in terms of the major nutrients %C, %N and %P and the corresponding molar ratios C:N, C:P and N:P. We provide calculated taxon mean values as well as the underlying raw data on individual level that was obtained from field sampling, supplemented by a literature research (n=1555, 174 taxa).
Major taxa and level of measurements: The database contains information on 188 macroinvertebrate taxa, available at species (n = 33), genus (96), tribe (9), subfamily (6), family (42), order (1) or class (1) levels.
Software format: .csv file
