BGQNAPv1.0: A summer macronutrients binned data set for the Northern Antarctic Peninsula, Southern Ocean

<p>We compiled a time series spanning the period from 1996 to 2019 of the seawater hydrographic variables conservative temperature (<sup>o</sup>C), absolute salinity (g kg<sup>&shy;&ndash;1</sup>) and dissolved oxygen (&mu;mol kg<sup>&shy;&ndash;1</sup>), and the macronutrients DIN (nitrate +&nbsp;nitrite +&nbsp;ammonium), phosphate, and silicic acid (&mu;mol kg<sup>&shy;&ndash;1</sup>). The study area covered the northern Antarctic Peninsula regions including the Gerlache Strait&nbsp;and the western, central, and eastern basins of Bransfield Strait. Most data (~90%) were obtained from the Brazilian High Latitude Oceanography Group (GOAL; http://goal.furg.br/) from austral summer field campaigns (January-March). In some years (1996, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011) we used hydrographic and macronutrient data from GLODAP 2020 (Olsen et al., 2020) along the NAP and exceptionally for 1996 we used data available from December 1995 to February 1996 (the FRUELA cruises, Garc&iacute;a et al., 2022; &Aacute;lvarez et al., 2002).&nbsp;Details on the sampling and analysis of macronutrient data obtained from GLODAP dataset can be accessed on the OCADS platform (<a href="https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/ocean-carbon-acidification-data-system-portal/">https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/ocean-carbon-acidification-data-system-portal/</a>).</p> <p>About 97% of the DIN data were composed of nitrate, followed by ammonium (2%) and nitrite (1%). Therefore, in some cases (11% of all data), we considered DIN as the nitrate concentration, when no nitrite and/or ammonium data were available. Discrete seawater samples were collected at irregular depth intervals from surface (5 m) to deep waters (at approximately 15 m from the bottom). We averaged the parameters for each region at regular depth intervals from the surface to the bottom (i.e., 0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 2000, 2500 m) to obtain an averaged summer profile for each year.</p> <p>All sampling and analyses information&nbsp;of the hydrographic and macronutrients&nbsp;are detailed in Kerr et al.&nbsp;(2018), Mata et al.&nbsp;(2018), Dotto et al.&nbsp;(2021)&nbsp;and Costa et al. (2020), and references therein.</p>

Sedimentation rate, concentration of macronutrients and flux for NE14, Toolik, Dimple, Perched during Summer 2009.

We measured the flux of bulk material and major macronutrients (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) from the water column to the benthos in four separate lakes during the summer of 2009. The lakes were chosen to investigate the impacts of disturbance on lake sedimentation. Two of the lakes, Dimple and Perched, were within catchments that were burned by the 2007 Anaktuvuk River wildfire. Two of the lakes, NE-14 and Perched, were receiving elevated sediment loads from thermokarst failures on their shorelines, and Toolik Lake was used as a reference lake. As such, the lakes were organized by disturbance regime: Dimple = fire only, Perched = fire + thermokarst, NE-14 = thermokarst only, and Toolik = undisturbed reference.

These images are organized by the date the picture was taken. These pictures were counted using the cell counter extension for ImageJ and counted. Counts were recorded in the LDF_egg_counting_data data sheet.</p>

The seventh macronutrient: how sodium shortfall ramifies through populations, food webs, and ecosystems

<p>Of the 25 elements required to build most organisms, sodium has a unique set of characteristics that ramify through terrestrial ecology. In plants, sodium is found in low concentrations and has little metabolic function; in plant consumers, particularly animals, sodium is essential to running costly Na-K ATPases. Here I synthesize a diverse literature from physiology, agronomy, and ecology, toward identifying sodium's place as the "7th macronutrient", one whose shortfall targets two trophic levels—herbivores and detritivores. I propose that sodium also plays a central, though unheralded role in herbivore digestion, via its importance to maintaining microbiomes and denaturing tannins. I highlight how sodium availability is a key determinant of consumer abundance and the geography of herbivory and detritivory. And I propose a re-appraisal of the assumption that, because sodium is metabolically unimportant to most plants, it is of little use. Instead, I suggest that sodium's critical role in limiting herbivore performance makes it a commodity used by plants to manipulate their herbivores and mutualists, and by consumers like bison and elephants to generate grazing lawns: dependable sources of sodium.</p>

The evolution of lifespan and ageing in response to dietary macronutrients in male and female decorated crickets

<p>Dietary macronutrients regulate lifespan and ageing, yet little is known about their evolutionary effects. Here, we examine the evolutionary response of these traits in decorated crickets (<em>Gryllodes sigillatus</em>) maintained on diets varying in caloric content and protein-to-carbohydrate ratio. After 37 generations, each population was split: half remained on the evolution diet and half switched to a standardized diet. Crickets lived longer and aged slower when evolving on high-calorie (both sexes) and carbohydrate-biased (females only) diets and had lower baseline mortality on high-calorie (females only) diets. However, on the standardized diet, crickets lived longer when evolving on high-calorie diets (both sexes), aged slower on high-calorie (females only) and carbohydrate-biased (both sexes) diets, and had lower baseline mortality on high-calorie (males only) and protein-biased (both sexes) diets. Lifespan was longer and baseline mortality lower when provided the evolution versus the standardized diet but ageing rate was comparable. Moreover, lifespan was longer, ageing slower (females only) and baseline mortality lower (males only) compared to our evolved baseline suggesting varying degrees of dietary adaptation. Collectively, we show dietary components influence the evolution of lifespan and ageing in different ways and highlight the value of combining experimental evolution with nutritional geometry.</p>

Effects of temperature and wildflowers on survival and macronutrient stores of the alfalfa leafcutting bee under extended cold storage

<p><em>Megachile rotundata</em> (F.) is an important pollinator of alfalfa in the United States. Enhancing landscapes with wildflowers is a primary strategy for conserving pollinators and may improve sustainability of <em>M. rotundata</em>. Changing cold storage temperatures from a traditionally static thermal regime (STR) to a fluctuating thermal regime (FTR) improves overwintering success and extends <em>M. rotundata</em>'s shelf life and pollination window. Whether floral resources enhance overwintering survival and/or interact with thermal regime are unknown. With these data sets we tested the combined effects of enhancing alfalfa fields with wildflowers and thermal regime on survival and macronutrient stores under extended cold storage (i.e., beyond one season). <em>Megachile rotundata </em>adults were released in alfalfa plots with and without wildflower strips summer 2017. Completed nests were harvested in September 2017 and stored in STR. After a year, cells were randomly assigned to remain in STR for 6 months or in FTR for a year of extended cold storage; emergence rates were observed monthly. Macronutrient levels (i.e., sugars, glycogen, trehalose and total lipids) of newly emerged females were assessed. </p>

Micronutrients enhance macronutrient effects in a meta-analysis of grassland arthropod abundance

Aim: Ongoing alterations to Earth's biogeochemical cycles (e.g. via fertilization, burning of fossil fuels, and pollution) are expected to impact plants, plant consumers, and all subsequent trophic levels. While fertilization experiments often reveal arthropod nutrient limitation by nitrogen and phosphorus via effects on plant nutrient density and biomass, these macronutrients are only two of many nutrients important to arthropod fitness. Micronutrients are key to osmoregulation and enzyme function and can interact synergistically with macronutrients to shape the geography of arthropod abundance. We examine arthropod response to macro- and micronutrient fertilization as a function of nutrient type, application amount, duration, frequency, and plant responses to fertilization with the goal of addressing how ongoing alterations to biogeochemical cycles will shape future grassland food webs. Location: Global. Time period: 1987-2018. Major taxa studied: Invertebrates. Methods: We compiled a database of 62 studies to test the response of six arthropod trophic groups to multiple fertilizer types (compositions of varying macro- and micronutrients), quantities, application frequencies, and application durations. Additionally, we examined the role of plant nutrient content and biomass in mediating arthropod responses to fertilization. Results: Micronutrients applied alone had no effects on plant biomass nor arthropod abundance. However, when added with macronutrients, micronutrients amplified the effect of N, P, and K in promoting arthropod abundance, a synergy which did not affect plant biomass. Micronutrients thus catalyzed the ability of macronutrients to promote arthropod abundance across all guilds studied. Main conclusions: In grasslands, the rules governing the abundance of autotrophs and their consumers appear to differ fundamentally in their response to Earth's changing biogeochemistry. By revealing the importance of micronutrients for arthropods using a global dataset, we highlight a stoichiometric disjunction between limits of plants and arthropods for metal cations whose biogeochemistry, along with N and P, are being actively rearranged in the Anthropocene.

MEDI: Macronutrient Extraction and Determination from Invertebrates, a rapid, cheap and streamlined protocol

<p>Macronutrients, comprising carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, underpin many ecological processes, but their quantification in ecological studies is often inaccurate and laborious, requiring large investments of time and bulk samples, which make individual-level studies impossible. This study presents MEDI (Macronutrient Extraction and Determination from Invertebrates), a protocol for the direct, rapid and relatively low-cost determination of macronutrient content from single small macroinvertebrates.</p> <p>Macronutrients were extracted by a sequential process of soaking in 1:12 chloroform:methanol solution to remove lipid and then solubilizing tissue in 0.1 M NaOH. Proteins, carbohydrates and lipids were determined by colorimetric assays from the same individual specimens.</p> <p>The limits of detection of MEDI with the equipment and conditions used were 0.067 mg ml-1, 0.065 mg ml-1 and 0.006 mg ml-1 for proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, respectively. Adjusting the volume of reagents used for extraction and determination can broaden the range of concentrations that can be detected. MEDI successfully identified taxonomic differences in macronutrient content between five insect species.</p> <p>MEDI can directly and rapidly determine macronutrient content in tiny (dry mass ~3 mg) and much larger individual invertebrates. Using MEDI, the total macronutrient content of over 50 macroinvertebrates can be determined within around three days of collection at a cost of ~$1.35 per sample.</p>

Data from: Macronutrient selection of free-ranging urban Australian white ibis (Threskiornis moluccus)

Anthropogenic habitats often provide urban wildlife the opportunity to feed on a range of nutritionally diverse foods, which may ultimately lead to human-wildlife conflict. The Australian white ibis (Threskiornis moluccus) provides an exemplar model for examining the nutritional priorities and constraints of a native vertebrate that is successfully transitioning to an urban specialist. Here, we used field-based feeding trials to investigate the macronutrient preferences of free-ranging ibis in Sydney, Australia. Feeding trials (n = 61) offering three experimental feeds showed that ibis selected significantly more high-carbohydrate (HC) than high-protein (HP) and high-lipid (HL) foods (95% CIHP-HC = −1.115 to −0.709; CIHL-HC = −1.874 to −1.468), and significantly more HP than HL (CIHL-HP = −0.962 to −0.556). The average proportion of macronutrient-derived energy selected by ibis was 25% protein (P; ± 1.1 SE): 23% lipid (L; ± 1.1): 52% carbohydrate (C; ± 1.8). Nutritional geometry suggested that mixtures selected at experimental feeders were substantially higher in C and lower in P than are natural prey (e.g. insects, crustaceans), which were composed primarily of P and L. Compositional log-ratio-based linear models of factors affecting macronutrient proportions selected by ibis showed that: 1) ln(P/C) increased with amount of recent rainfall; and 2) ln(L/C) also increased with rain and had a non-linear relationship with number of birds feeding. Our results suggest that ibis forage for macronutrients rather than energy "per se", and that their urban foraging is influenced by competition and the environment.
